In olden days people did not know how to fight empty handed the way they do today. In the olden days when funakoshi formalized shotokan people fought like John L. Sullivan. The error is when people hold to tradition and refuse to modernize their training methods. Ichi .. ni .. san doesn't cut it when your training for the modern ring!
Whatever anyone may think of Funakoshi Sensei and his karate abilitly there is one fact that cannot be denied. He brought karate from a small island to the mainland of Japan and set the foundations for the building of the popularity of karate in Japan and later through his student Nakayama to the rest of the world. Without them karate (no matter the style) would not be as popular as they are today. The style matters not, but the person does and his/her attitude to their martial art. Oss!

What the Gracies said was the we must be complete martial artists. Because in some situations, going to the ground will get you killed. One hit from skilled karateka in vital point,and grappler in cage will be K.O. I don't claim that grappling sucks,though. But this way of fighting has lacks,just like striking.
Funakoshi was a real Spirit of Martial Arts,there will be no man like he,Morihei Ueshiba and Jigoro Kano anymore!
