Just as a reply to everything that's hidden, I think the simpleness of the song fits where it came from, My Neighbor Totoro. It's a kiddy, family movie. So yeah...
Well, his music is written for films, and can't be written too complicated. I see your point, but this piece is not very suited for this type of performance. However, the main theme is pretty catchy, and the piece itself is pretty well written, so I am very satisfied with this performance.

I agree. It seemed so purely westernized. I expected to hear more eastern influence only to be disappointed. It's a catchy theme, yes, but just too damn cliche. For performers of that skill level, it was rather humiliating. What's even more daunting is is that modern (crappy) music is being orchestrated. I can't wait for the next beethoven/chopin/lizst- any will do.
Haha, western music fits so much better into movie themes methinks. The musicians can play whatever they want, but if they want some money aswell, you really can't play classic music.
It's kind of sad, people don't visit classic performances enough, this is the result. Hate it or like :p
The line between modern contemporary and classical is actually quite thin. "Classical" in a general sense can be almost anything. But when referring to compositions of the classical era of music, it quickly shrinks the definition of what it is. It seems to me that contemporary pretty much means you can only use simple repetitive progressions like this.. haha- or that's the impression I've been getting.
I think the reason you have that impression is that if you make modern contemptorary music today which is less repititive, and more like one would call "classic", they would not be as interesting. If on should make music more alike classic, one could just play classic instead.
completely topless piano, that's how raw he is xP

I really hate his style, its horrible, and really quite simple, absolutely nothing new is brought to music by this. Sorry
