@titans797979 Yes, if you use ignorance to define your labels, then you will come to an ignorant conclusion. On the other hand, if you define people according to what they actually believe and support, then anyone with a half of a brain would realize the majority of Americans are center-left, even progressively liberal on many central issues.
We have a right leaning government and even if people THINK they are center right if you got right down to it and looked at their views and asked them questions you will find that even the "Center right" leaning people actually have liberal views and most don't even realize it
I mean you will take 5 people that voted republican and get down into their true values and you will find that at LEAST 3 out of the 5 actually have liberal values but think they lean right.

I can see the hatred for conservatives in his eyes. Criticizing conservatives is one thing, but for his spick ass to hate conservatives is another thing.
Believe me, if I thought I could make this world a better place, I'd kill myself. I've considered it in the past but ultimately came to the conclusion that it was my moral duty to inform others of the harms of the liberal left. It is the left that depleted our dollar, and it is the left that will cause civil war in America. Let me remind you we have the guns, so batter down, if your leaders take away our rights, we won't stand by and let it happen, we'll have to go after the pussy assholes.
Is being a Conservative = Republican? If so, Since when?
What does values have to do with Politics? Sure due to certain values you might vote for a certain party if they support it for example Abortion but what do that have to do with Centre right politics?
But if I get this straight from this clip anyway:
Republican=Right, Democrat=Left.,
Conservative=Right, Liberal=Left.
Against Gouverment spending=Right, For Gouverment spending = Left.
Centre Right country??? Sure! Obama won after the deepest economic crisis in a few generations, two wars that now have lasted longer than World War 2, the oppositive party controlled the government for 6 years and most of the branches for the last 14.
So Obama won but it took Extra Extra Extraordinary circumstances for him to do so. Extraordinary cirucmstances DO NOT signify a change in one's core values, rather they signify a tendency to act out of character.
He makes a point McCain is centered right and he lost. The country has changed and will change in the next 4 years until they come up with new ideas this country is centered left not far left but centered left for the time for the tight to take back their power. I honestly think we should have atleast 10 to 20 political parties and let independents get the same air time.
That was great - no matter what REALLY happens, you have to act republican. Good for you Cenk! They just don't want to get it (republicans, I mean). They see it in front of their eyes but are refusing to admit it. That's repuplicans for you.
yeah, Cenk, apparently we just checked the wrong box in the voting booth. You know, it's so absurd, the center-right myth -- they'll say "oh, they voted down gay marriage in California, there's more proof." What about legalizing marijuana in Michigan? These guys selectively report everything. They just want to reinforce their own twisted beliefs.
Americans don't know their political left from their political right. You either sit in the party on the speakers right (the government) or in the party on the speakers left (the opposition). There is no center.
How can a COUNTRY be center-right or center-left? Isn't wherever the country is at really the center by definition? I guess the "real America" is center-right. The rest of us don't fit into their equation.
I think if you apply international standards America is about as far right as you can get, center nothing. But I still think that as a nation the people define where the center of the political spectrum is, not the other way 'round and all this "center-right" Bullshit is just a typical Republican name game, like "politicly correct","race card","class warfare","death tax" and their latest and most dishonest,"card check".

This guy is an idiot. First of all, this country is based on the center right. The reason Obama won is because people are unhappy with the financial crisis and looked at "change" to be the answer. It's not. Obama is going to prove why the far left doesn't work in America when he raises taxes to every house hold making more than $40,000 and businesses alike. This is going to create a spike in job cuts. Also, lets not kid ourselves, 99% of the black vote went to Obama.
Um, sweetie, Tyler Durden would hate you, with a passion. Either pull your head out of your ass, or change your screen name. I'm choking on the irony.
@tdurden18: obama won because more people voted for him. they agreed more with his politics, his ideas, and they felt we needed to take this country in a new direction -- away from the huge failures of the right-wing policies of the past 8 years.
This "ljcosby" is a joke. I clobbered him with FACTS and SOURCES and he came back by making fun of facts and making a childish joke out of my username.
He did this because he knows he has no facts on his side. He just made up partisan BS from Limbaugh, Savage and Fox News. You know, stuff he blindly swallows and never confirms with other sources.
First of all... if even modern democratic electorates employ "center-right" tactics and thinking, if even most of those on the left are center-right...well, then what is center-right? define it, then we'll talk.
The Republicans have been in power for the last 30 years. This was more of a "throw the bums out" election than it was the country moving toward the Left.
"If it's so center right, even now why are the republicans losing?"
Because the Republicans, even John McCain, aren't center anything. They are extremist right conservative. When compared to the political center in the rest of the world, the democrats are centrist and when compared to Europe and Canada, the Dems are center right. As has been said before. The conservative party in Canada is left of the liberal party here. Our perception of political orientation is skewed compared to the world.
This is who republicans have done things... I thought I was the only one Cenk that saw this stuff. It is like they have their email or cell phones or blackberries or that chip in the back of their neck uploaded with these talking points and they all run to a camera as fast as they can...
Remember the "Up or Down vote" craze ..they played that more than qube 93 played "Regulators" by Warren G back in the day. It is some scary shit.
Compared to other western civilized countries, America is most definitely conservative. The countrys majority leans to the right. Because of the debacle of the last 8 years it didn't matter much who ran for the repubs', they would have lost. Comprehensively so becuase of the slick campaign Obama ran. But all things equal, with no awful record to ponder over, the US would vote republican evertime, because they are fundamentally a conservative, (or centre-right) nation.
America is going to be center-right for a long time, as it always has been. As I say, it's been "right-shifted". It's far to the right from any European country.
Obama, with his focus on education, health, and equality, might get your country on the path to the left, where I assure you you'll do much better.
Just take my word. America is not center-right, it's got two right wing parties. Obama is probably left even of the average Democrat. And he can show what the left can do well. :)
I didn't say America would be better moving to the right. I asked our foreign friend Sorenzo why he feels American will do better with a leftist tilt.
Ok, enough of this debate. Everyone go find yourself a copy of a political science book (tertiary text, not "politics for dummies") and then argue this point. If there was a centre line between McCain and Obama, Obama is left and McCain is right. The country is left to centre-left. If you put it on a world stage, Obama still sits right of the centre, and McCain is a nut job.
On a world spectrum, CENTRE-RIGHT IS A GOOD THING! It's being left but minding your money.
Yea, but it seems that the Republican party believes they lost the election because they weren't conservative enough. If our left is center right, what does that say about our right?*cough*extreme right*cough*.
The point I was trying to make in my former post was that the political environment in the US is so skewed right that an American saying we are center right means we are hard right on the global scale. Then they say Obama is going to make us communist because he is more moderate.
Repeating falsehoods over and over and over again. This tactic is conventionally known as "The Big Lie." We've heard it forever re: 'the Liberal media" (I think your video exposes that claim as BS), and now we're hearing it with proclamations that "America is a center-right country."
I don't believe America is center right, or center left anything really and that's just leftovers from the Karl Rove era of political division and by all means, let none of us follow in those footsteps.
I believe the people of this country just want a government that works.
A president that will regain a great deal of what we have lost in stature in the world since the Bush foreign policy fiasco that has been the war in Iraq.
Non-partisan polling data shows quite clearly that a solid majority of Americans favor "liberal" positions on core issues like government spending, taxes, health care, the right to choose, etc.
I prefer to use those resources rather than just assuming that I personally know what America is (hint to some of the commenters on this video).
This country needs to get rid of its obsession with partisan politics. There is so much time wasted trying to pick out the flaws in judgement of the "opposite party" that there is no real thought going into the problems that this country is facing. If people like this poster (The Young Turks) would put their passion towards something more constructive than bashing an opposing political faction, this country would be much better off.
That was actually part of Turk's point and bashing people for bashing people is probably a bigger waste of time and bashing people who bash people for bashing people is even worse and everybody who does it should be sho(BANG)A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A--A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-AH!
I challenge anyone who HAS BEEN TO A LEFTIST country to say America is centre-left.
So many people are posting that "the election proves we are centre-left" until someone posts otherwise I will assume none of these people have ever left the US and visited Europe or another place of the sorts.
The democratic policies are very close to the Australian Liberal party, which are our conservatives. We have another party that is more left than that. That is world politics.
When right wingers and other pundits say America is center-right they aren't doing a fair comparison of anything, they're simply trying to undermine support for a progressive agenda.
And even though they don't intend to, that's also what many liberals do when they argue that America is center-right. Again, unintentionally.
I agree w/ you that the GOP has abandoned basic conservative ideas...like balancing a budget & not engaging in nation-building.
I'm a Registered Republican & was a contributor and delegate to our State Republican Convention here in Texas this year for Ron Paul.
But in the election I had to vote for Barack. He's far from perfect, but I see nothing in McCain but more Bush craziness & his selection of Palin, who is totally incompetent, was beyond shocking!
Abandon the far right you say Dillionx? Uhh, the far right has been abandon years ago...which is why McCain won the primaries...and then lost. I wish people would learn what conservative means.
It was the democrats that passed the fair housing and loan act the has put us in this economic problem, not the Republicans. Bad loans to bad people that can pay for anything much less a home in the first place, getting a mortgage, wtf. Way to go dems!!! Can't wait to see what they give away now.
Fact: McClatchy reported that 84% of the subprime loans came from PRIVATE lenders, not F. Mae and F. Mac.
There have also been reports of private lenders offering $4,000 comissions for each variable rate mortgage. Not to mention the fact that something like 60% of the African Americans given variable rate mortgages qualifed for a fixed rate.
Sorry, but your Fox News/Limbaugh driven claim simply doesn't square with the facts. I know, some don't care about facts but some of us still do.
Believe whatever "report" you want to Encyclodouche. Maybe you will see the real facts in Febuary, since you supposedly care so much about them. 60% qualified for fixed rate...yeah right. Even if they were qualified looks like they were still dumb enough to take the variable. Sorry it's the color purple bitches.

Funny how you dems have selective hearing. Obviously from what you believe so far you are okay with bearing the mark of the beast. Hell you probably already have it. My claim doesn't "square" with the facts you came up with not the real facts. I don't listen or watch either one of those two you mentioned, but maybe you should. Thanks for replying though it's nice to know how stupid people really are and why you chose the president you did.
Again, if Cenk Uygar tells us that the GOP needs to move left, then we will do the opposite lol. Of course Cenk wants the GOP to move left, he is a leftist! LOL thats why McCain won the primarires...we allowed the liberal media to pick McCain over Romney...it wont happen ever again I can promise that.
Do you think the GOP is really going to listen to Cenk Uygar? I'll tell you what Cenk, worry about the democrates, and let us worry about the GOP LOLOLOL!
We are center-right very much. A huge part of the populaton is against illegal alien amnisty (watch what happens when Obama brings that up), against spending, against high taxes, against "free trade", etc. The trouble is, we havent had a real conservative for the last 8 years. McCain is not and niether is Bush. Now the GOP must get back to its roots, and kick out the liberal globalists, and put conservatives back in charge again.
If you consider the left as big government, and right as small government. Then there has only been two groups that were both left (republicans) and further left (democrats).
Bush is exactly what Movement Conservatism is. McCain mostly too. There aren't really any conservatives, that's a mythical fairytale Republicans fall back on when they screw up. They don't balance the budget, they were for amnesty before, they believe the tax burden should be shifted to the middle class and paid in huge amounts by our children and grandchildren, they let corporations write free-trade deals. It's like you're all in bizarro world. Against spending, lmao, that's always the funniest
I agree with the statement America is sitting centre-right, however I would like to also put forward that the Democrats ARE centre-right, and the Republicans are far right. Anyone sitting left of that centre line gets accused of being a commie.
I'm comparing this to other democratic nations (such as Australia where I live) where your left is roughly equal to our right :P which actually makes sense, as I support democrats in America but Liberals (conservatives) in Australia.
Center right? first, that only shows how dumb americans are. they care more about the letter R next to a politicians name than about what actually happens. how many dems need to clean up after a republican mess before the dumb sheep get it?
Second, old people are the most conservative. 65+ year olds. they voted for Bush and McCain. Most of them will be DEAD in a decade.
Young people are much more progressive liberals. And young people are the future.
i believe that before this election we were a center right country, but with lots of independants swinging both ways. I think what happened this election is that a vast number of people looked at the current state of the country and said "oh shit" and decided that they would like to try something different (change)
I think that right now, we are almost perfectly centered, but the many people who aren't completely sure what they think will work want to give the left a chance.
I disagree. I think since 'liberal' has been defined as anyone supporting the New Deal, most people are left leaning. I don't see people standing in line to turn in their social security cards or tearing up their SS checks. Unless you stop benefiting from so-called left policies or reject them outright, you're a lefty.
As one commenter pointed out, we're center-right on some issues but moving more towards the left in others. These "right", "left", "center-whatever" buzzwords really need to be tossed in the can when speaking about America as a whole. Even Obama is towards the right on some issues like gay marriage and bailing out corporations (yeah, that's a decision to be proud of, for sure), so how can we slap a narrow label on all the nation's policies and interests?
LOL. First of all, these "conservatives" (R) fucking stupid.
Amerika is center-RIGHT? Says who?
Personally, I've never really thought of it that way. I mean, how do you figure? A large portion of voters are convinced to vote their "values." These are people who have no real political ideology, and they couldn't care less how well it turns out their man governs, or if he keeps the promises he made on his way to power. example: Bush supporters (25-30% of the electorate)
LMAO the only way you liberal idiots won is because the liberal Bush did a bad job...you guys cant win shit unless the worst pres of all time is GOP. HAHAHA you people make me laugh. We are going right soon...youll see.
actually, Bush accomplished a lot of what you monkeys have been calling for for like 30 years. its just that the results of what you want are disgusting.
democrats can't win unless the worst president in history (the one you supported) screws up? true, but that shows how many idiots like you we have in this country.
and don't worry, Palin can overtake Bush as the worst president soon easily
Yes Cenk we are center right. We ran a liberal canadate who is old, plus the liberal Bush did a bad job. We are very much center right, but you Cenk dare the only one who doesnt understand that. Get a life you turk loser.
in the words of gary coleman..." WHATCHU TALKIN BOUT REPUBLICANS !? "......these people are all about propagand, lies, fear, control, intimidation and manipulalation......america has rejected their ideas and the world is applauding us for it.....i can't wait for these people's mindset to die out.....like the dinosaurs who walked the earth 4000 years ago....LOL
I am a progressie but I agree America IS a center right nation on social issues and all you need to do is look at California gay marriage ban to prove it. However, I think on economic issues we are moving to the left and that is proven by the overwhelming desire for a national healthcare, despite the water down version of Obama's plan
Well they are kinda right. At least from up here in Canada, even when democrats in power you seem to be leaning to the right, from our perspectives of course.
Wasn't Bush FAR-RIGHT? Republicans have been MORE RIGHTIST than anybody else. They haven't really been in the CENTER. I want an administration that borrows some LEFTIST ideas and some RIGHTIST ideas. As long as they make sense, there is NOTHING wrong with having both.
No. Bush was the most fiscally liberal Republican president ever. He cut taxes, but he also expanded the government more than any Democrat could hope for, creating the debt we now have. Republicans need to go back to their true conservative, responsible roots: limited government and balanced-budget.
this is not even the point. the government does not exist to legislate morality. it exists for personal and property safety. who cares about if it's center right or not. conservative and liberal pundits will continue to hash out this war for the people's minds and hearts but no one really cares about this crap unless it hits their pocketbook or their person. this is fodder for the weak minded and i'm sick of it.
I seriously think this country is center-right. Obama is not a true liberal by most means at all, if anything he is a centrist. The people of this country may not be center-right entirely, but the government definitely is center-right. We haven't had a real liberal party in an extremely long time, and I doubt as a country we ever will.
But Centrism (for lack of a better word) is a good thing. Having good points from both sides of the spectrum can benefit everyone more than either the left or right view can. If he is considered a centrist, let him be, because that shows he is smart man to use not just one side, but both.
Seriously, what's wrong with both conservative AND liberal views?
It was actually 6% of the vote, and he garnered 364 electoral votes - 375 electoral votes is a traditional landslide, and considering the closeness of the last two elections, this is a true landslide. Bush only won by 2.5% and got 286 electoral votes in 2004, and claimed a "mandate" after that. In 2000, Bush won by one electoral vote, while Gore won the popular vote by .5%. I think this is a landslide in all respects.
I don't really understand the "right/left" analogy. There are so many subjects and I don't think many people agree with ALL of them on a particular side.
For example, I think people should be able to have non-late term abortion. I think we should have a small government. I think we should work out problems with other countries using diplomacy unless we absolutely cannot. I don't think people are born equal, but I think everyone should have equal opportunity.
I'm tired of this "right/left" crap. Most people have views on various subjects that range from both "right" and "left". For example, being "conservative" apparently means running up the biggest debt in history. Who knew?
It is more of the same BS trying to seperate people and cause conflict.
I'm hoping that Obama can get us past this primitive way of thinking.
How is it that the country is center-right, when Obama won the popular vote? This makes zero sense, what a surprise coming from the Republican't party.
This country is a left and right country. Personally, I think most conservative values are outdated. Perhaps my view of the right would be more favorable if the right wing didn't try to force their "morals" down my throat "for my protection". I am a liberal, because I believe that anyone should be able to do whatever they want as long as they don't cause adverse harm to others or our collective environment. I AM NOT CENTER-RIGHT!!
I AM LIBERAL and that is why I voted for BARACK OBAMA!!!!
Explain to me how Obama is centrist I would love to hear this. And what International standards are you referring to? You are aware that there are not just far-left democratic nations in the world don't you? So how could you say he is conservative compared to the rest of the world, when many countries are not even democratic to begin with? You seem like another angry Republican who's pissed off cause your messiah Palin lost. Here's another bombshell chump: America USED to be conservative.
Wow, take note, everyone. For the next four years I'll shoot down anyone who accuses us of being center-right. It's obviously a talking point, not a fact.
I love how they call Obama the most liberal man in the senate and then say he is actually a running conservative campaign when he wins.
I wonder how their heads don't explode when they utter should contradictory lies. Obama IS very left. He campaigned to the left. even Bill O'Rielly says that even now, and EVERY conservative said that before Tuesday. Guess when? He kicked ass! America voted for liberalism plan and simple.
America IS a centre-right country, the Democrats are centre-right and Republicans are a more extreme right party. Americans don't know what left is, believe me, liberals are still right on the European political spectrum.
You can make claims like that, but they are misleading because the political environment is so different countries. It is a matter of perception. Center-right to an American means something completely different than center-right in Sweden. When an American says that the country is center right they don't mean on a global spectrum.
I agree, because I've seen the world map drawn by America. You have commies to the west, socialists to the east and south ther' be dragons.
Using the terms left and right hold a consistent meaning across the globe and we arn't going to move the centre line because America doesn't want to feel too lop sided.
You're left is centre-right. It's a good thing. Centre right is a good place to be.
Obama's tax credits and Healthcare reform are essentially centrist ideas that can "bed down" in a centre-right country. Most likely, the next Republican president will be able to discard the changes.
Further, if the economy had been like 2006 and McCain hadn't picked Palin then Obama would most likely not be president. Obama has the fortune of circumstance and he does not have a mandate for "change" in the US. Put simply, McCain lost the election, Obama didn't win it.
I really like Cenk, don't get me wrong but he is completely wrong on this issue. The US is a centre right country. Obama is not left wing in any sense of the word - imagine if he was in Europe and proposing that instead of universal healthcare he was advocating an insurance system with government top up - he would be classed as far far right. He is basically a centrist, or at least his message is centrist.
This Young Turks Guy is an idiot...every major poll since the late 1970s has shown that there are more self-described conservatives in this country than self-described liberals, sometimes by a 2-1 margin.

The rest of us don't fit into their equation.
prakaklef 3 years ago
a country can be left or right if the majority of it's policies are left or right. IE, socialist countries are far left.
amirtalai 3 years ago

The Republicans have been in power for the last 30 years. This was more of a "throw the bums out" election than it was the country moving toward the Left.
TimeWarp66 3 years ago
"If it's so center right, even now why are the republicans losing?"
Because the Republicans, even John McCain, aren't center anything. They are extremist right conservative. When compared to the political center in the rest of the world, the democrats are centrist and when compared to Europe and Canada, the Dems are center right. As has been said before. The conservative party in Canada is left of the liberal party here. Our perception of political orientation is skewed compared to the world.

Compared to other western civilized countries, America is most definitely conservative. The countrys majority leans to the right. Because of the debacle of the last 8 years it didn't matter much who ran for the repubs', they would have lost. Comprehensively so becuase of the slick campaign Obama ran. But all things equal, with no awful record to ponder over, the US would vote republican evertime, because they are fundamentally a conservative, (or centre-right) nation.
adronias 3 years ago
America is going to be center-right for a long time, as it always has been. As I say, it's been "right-shifted". It's far to the right from any European country.
Obama, with his focus on education, health, and equality, might get your country on the path to the left, where I assure you you'll do much better.
Just take my word. America is not center-right, it's got two right wing parties. Obama is probably left even of the average Democrat. And he can show what the left can do well. :)

Balthial242 3 years ago
Yea, but it seems that the Republican party believes they lost the election because they weren't conservative enough. If our left is center right, what does that say about our right?*cough*extreme right*cough*.
The point I was trying to make in my former post was that the political environment in the US is so skewed right that an American saying we are center right means we are hard right on the global scale. Then they say Obama is going to make us communist because he is more moderate.

Balthial242 3 years ago
When right wingers and other pundits say America is center-right they aren't doing a fair comparison of anything, they're simply trying to undermine support for a progressive agenda.
And even though they don't intend to, that's also what many liberals do when they argue that America is center-right. Again, unintentionally.

ljcosby 3 years ago
Fact: McClatchy reported that 84% of the subprime loans came from PRIVATE lenders, not F. Mae and F. Mac.
There have also been reports of private lenders offering $4,000 comissions for each variable rate mortgage. Not to mention the fact that something like 60% of the African Americans given variable rate mortgages qualifed for a fixed rate.

McCain is not and niether is Bush. Now the GOP must get back to its roots, and kick out the liberal globalists, and put conservatives back in charge again.

Aiursrage2k 3 years ago
"If you consider the left as big government, and right as small government."
If he considers that the political right is for small government by default he knows nothing about politics or (world) history.
There are many kinds or right, and many kinds of left, and many kinds of big and small government.
Now, if we're honest about this campaign, we will recognize that O. ran as an economic liberal (center-right) and a cultural liberal (left).
O. won, make your conclusions.

Anyone sitting left of that centre line gets accused of being a commie.

i believe that before this election we were a center right country, but with lots of independants swinging both ways. I think what happened this election is that a vast number of people looked at the current state of the country and said "oh shit" and decided that they would like to try something different (change)
I think that right now, we are almost perfectly centered, but the many people who aren't completely sure what they think will work want to give the left a chance.
eeddssxx 3 years ago

I seriously think this country is center-right. Obama is not a true liberal by most means at all, if anything he is a centrist. The people of this country may not be center-right entirely, but the government definitely is center-right. We haven't had a real liberal party in an extremely long time, and I doubt as a country we ever will.
proddette 3 years ago

I don't think people are born equal, but I think everyone should have equal opportunity.
left/right is so primitive...
moulingalette 3 years ago
I'm tired of this "right/left" crap. Most people have views on various subjects that range from both "right" and "left". For example, being "conservative" apparently means running up the biggest debt in history. Who knew?
It is more of the same BS trying to seperate people and cause conflict.
I'm hoping that Obama can get us past this primitive way of thinking.

"The US left is more right than the Swedish right. You're a center- right country. Even your left is right."-bluent
Exactly.

Yes I agree. Left and right is all very subjective. The neocons are more left than the left in Saudi Arabia!

Put simply, McCain lost the election, Obama didn't win it.

us in the UK though that things would be better with Tony Blair - you saw what happened....

The bottom line is that anyone who is elected to power can fuck up. Obama at least had a good mentality about it.
