Capitalism is based on the idea that social good can come from selfish motives, so the idea that having kids is selfish isn't an argument fails, as does the idea that parents put their hopes on their kids as i don't see any research to prove a substantial number of parents do this or that it harms the kids.
It's just that some people, for economic, psychological or sociological reasons, can't raise children well. Like abortion its not the parent we should care about, its the child, and as with that method of controlling the population, might benefit from not being raised by someone not upto the task.
We're not all subject to the same biological drives - some want to have sex with the same sex, others with no sex. Some people might just not want kids, you can't generalize your desires to everyone.
The urge to have more and more children is the reason why we have overpopulation. Its about time society started looking at it from a different angle. I myself will probably not have any children. I dont need any. Im fine by myself. And if I ever decide to have a child (unlikley), I would probably adopt one. I would rather give a home to a child without parents then to add my more weight to overpopulation.
I'm one of the people who prefers to not have kids. I don't have the ability to handle the stress behind raising another human being, and I don't think I ever will. I think pets will be as far as I can handle in terms of responsibility.
I agree that having children CAN be more selfish then not. Work in a restaurant, or retail store, and 90% of the clean up, is cleaning up after unattended children. 90% of the common shoplifting (not professional shoplifting) is committed by children.

I knew a mother with two sick adult daughters and one son in prison. I'm one of the people who prefers to not have kids. I don't have the ability to handle the stress behind raising another human being, and I don't think I ever will. I think pets will be as far as I can handle in terms of responsibility.

I agree that having children CAN be more selfish then not. Work in a restaurant, or retail store, and 90% of the clean up, is cleaning up after unattended children. 90% of the common shoplifting (not professional shoplifting) is committed by children.
As a single person, I pay MORE taxes because I have NO dependents, to pay for local schools I have no need for (single parents have it MADE when taxes are concerned).
25% of the children in the US are on "Nutrition Assistants" (food stamps).

childless marriages are happier? i honestly don't believe that. happiness in a marriage doesn't depend on how many kids you got. i've seen a lot of childless marriages end in divorce. i think the fools that wrote these articles just can't stand kids in general. i work as a 1st grade TA and i enjoy working with kids. being around them has actually made me want to have kids of my own. i honestly don't understand why some people don't like kids and why they wouldn't want kids.

I am so glad that women are stepping out of the ultimate brainwash of acting as breeding cows. Let's face it, there needs to be people who have kids otherwise our species will die off, but we are reaching the 7 billion mark population wise and having 5 kids when you can barely afford to feed one is not a smart decision. There are many reasons not to have children or to have them as well but it should be a choice not a social/spiritual/religious/gender mandate.

@tomitstube i believe we in the first world should not leave more people than we are as a policy, if you choose to have 3 kids in this day and age your choosing to overpopulate the planet your children are going to have to live in. It shouldn't be illegal but i'm damn tired of tax dollar's that could otherwise go to health or education being used to in a sense subsidize reproduction.

I think people that have kids who say they love them/there's nothing else like it; do it for reasons both because they do & they've been conditioned by society. A example could be gender.

I can understand someone who makes the personal choice to not have kids, but there should be good reason behind it. For example, if you feel that you would be unable to be a good parent, or if you are not emotionally stable, etc.

I knew a mother with two sick adult daughters and one son in prison. She was a strong and caring mother; but I have to be honest she was depressed, miserable and had no freedom to go anywhere because she was busy taking care of someone. This is an interesting topic. As I've run into many women who stated that they either hate kids, don't want kids, the fact that it's selfish. I look at it as a matter of choice. If you want kids fine if you don't then there is nothing wrong with that. Hell, if they want to point that out I've heard some say "marriage" is overrated. I have a high functioning autistic son, he's 6 in first grade. I love him to death but God, it's so much harder the for the normal parent. I see them with there kids and I can't believe how they don't have to worry about the same things I do. There kids talk to them and they can have real conversations. I'm affrad he'll never be "normal" enough for sociaty. I often teater on the thought of having no kids, but I was never a "baby lover" to begin with.

I think we dangerously understate the responsibility that goes along with having kids and also, it's about population control. We can't all have 2-3 kids, especially in a world where we've become very efficient at preventing 'untimely' death!

As someone who's engaged, and both my fiancée and I want to have children, I can say that the findings point out some very real concerns, but solutions they propose are very short-sighted. I'm not looking forward to changing diapers, but I want to see my children grow up, go to school, pursue careers, and have families of their own, so am I willing to put up with a few diaper changes to do that? Sure.

Finally it's coming out that all women wanted to be on sex in the city and even the worst looking guys think they can be a playboy for life. The only reason some people find it hard is because they try to do too much cos kids all think they are in Gossip Girl or something.
Point being we are all living in a movie. If you switch your TVs off you will appreciate humans. Do family stuff and don't feel pressured to spend when you can't afford a holiday. You will start hating yourself.

I remember Bernie Mac saying kids were boring lol. Then all the high profile silly media cows in England starting saying the same thing as though they invented that sentiment. They didn't Bernie Mac did! I think it's wrong to berate a woman if she doesn't want kids.

I've thought kids were overrated too but was afraid to say it because it's not politically correct.
That said, I do believe kids can be a great part of your life -- but you have to be in the right frame of mind.
Speaking for myself, and not trying to make myself look good, but just being honest -- I made life more fun for my dad when I was a kid. He liked going places with me & doing things. So in that case a child enriches the parent's life.
So ultimately it depends on the parent's mindframe

I had an English teacher in high school (I'll call him Greaves) who mentioned how he dislikes one of his sons for not producing grandchildren. The son and his wife have two dogs, but no kids.
Greaves constantly demands more grandchildren and is so scornful toward his son without children; which makes it ironic (I think) that Greaves calls his son the selfish one.

I want kids for the reasons Cenk gave, but also it isn't on my to do list..at all. If it happens awesome, I will be ecstatic. But I don't think I will go out of my way to try, at least not at the current point in time.

aren't we biologically driven to have kids ? Sexual pleasure is just nature's incentive for us to keep the species going. Just because contraconception is invented doesn't man our eveolutionary psychology can change.
Parenthood is a bit like sex. It's not always enjoyable especially if you have to do it 24*7. One can easily shun a bad sex partner and people breakup at a drop of hat. But to part ways with a child (no matter how bad he or she is) is million times more difficult, a last resort

not really. we are driven to find pleasure. just so happens most of the people who didnt find pleasure in sex died with no offspring to propagate that disposition, so now most find pleasure in "baby making." but really, the overwhelming majority of sexual activity is for recreation only.

every life form in nature has only one primary goal, which is to propogate life. Be it unicellular bacteria or an advanced species like mamals and humans. Every activity that we do can ultimately be traced to only one thing, the instinct to survive. . Sex gives pleasure, just like eating does, but that is incidental. Nature evolved us to find pleasure in sex so we can seek it so species survives. Now if somebody doesn't believe in eveolution, thats a whole different debate.

no, thats why so many people opt not to have children. that isnt their primary goal. you speak without regard for an organisms conscious decisions. suicide isnt conducive to survival, neither is bungee jumping or smoking, etc. youre ascribing purpose to the process, when there really is none: it shouldnt be find pleasure in sex "so we can," but rather, find pleasure in sex "because..."

I am not concerned about "an" organisms decisions. Of course there are freak occurances in nature in all species. But there is a reason not all humanity is sucidal or bungee jumpers. Surival instinct is ingrained in our brains whether you like it or not. At individual level it means things like conciously deciding not to swim in shark infested waters. At macro level (species level) it means the eveolutionary desire to have sex and reproduce. Thats why most people want to have children its nature

its not a freak occurrence -- thats assuming there was some plan behind it all. you left out smokers, and countless other nasty habits that are not conducive to survival: overeating, unhealthy eating. contraceptives, blowjobs -- those dont lead to babies. no one is arguing that people arent inclined to survive, but your original statement was: every life form in nature has only one primary goal, which is to propogate life. thats just not true. desire to have sex, yes. reproduce? not so much.

I am not trying to leave out anything. I can't list all bad habbits in 500 characters. Sure 10,000 years of civilization have brought about lots of cultural and behavioural changes and what you call "bad habbits",including not having wanting to reproduce. But biologically nothing has changed. Evolution still wants us to reproduce and a overwhelming majority of us are naturally inclined to act that way, what you call "concious decision"
