I don't know if I completely agree with you. Yeah, he started off as a fantastic villain, though, IMO, he became a very cliched villain when they made him more human. Nowadays every villain is someone you feel sorry for, leaving very few that you can really fear - which is what made Sylar so amazing originally, he was so powerful so early on in the show, that he was absolutely terrifying. He still is one of my favorite villains, but I wouldn't say he's one of the best.
I think it's a good thing that we can relate to the villains as well as the heroes. It makes for a deeper story in my oppinion and just like in the real world, you don't know much about a situation unless you know every sides view-point.. Just my oppinion ;)

That's very hard to do when you have someone who has very human characteristics. For Sylar, he is practically indestructible, and can kill you with a thought. But he's a momma's boy. You really can't look at him anymore with the same fear that he instilled in the second episode when he was introduced.

About the brain thing, even IMDB says it. That he eats brains. I don't really want to believe it but it keeps coming back to me. As the little hints here and there that he does. Even Zach says that Sylar might not be eating the brains. o.o
i think they are asuming it because sylar says two things. the first thing is "it is located in the brain" (or something like that) and the second thing is the thing he yelled at mohinder "give me your damn list so i can SINK MY TEETH in it". why would he want to sink his teeth into something he doesn't want to eat?

Sylar is one of the best villain characters ever, in my opinion.
Even though he's a bad gay with a lust for power, he still has something very much human about him, and you often feel sorry for him.

He does not eat brains;
1. He examines them and reinacts.
2. He did this to the cockroach he was observing in his cell, we seen him on 2 occasions following it with his eyes.
3. Cockroaches can go periods of times without eating, and survive radiation allowing him to control Tim's power.
