He was simply stating the stereotype for many white people, and I'm pretty sure he knew that by the tone of his voice. Just from interviews and such, I doubt he actually believes any of those stereotypes :)
While this isn't the most racist thing I've seen, I do hope he realizes there are black people whose parents are still together AND who grew up in the suberbs..
I don`t think poor Hunter Parrish is a racist either, yet I can understand why some people get offended and hurt by what he is saying in this clip. Cause when he uses these sterotypes to illustrate a point, he unwillingly reminds some of us of those who uses the same phrases and expressions in an offensive, or downright hatefull way. And, not that it matters, but I am not coloured; I am a white as snow Scandinavian who just happens to dislike racism and hate in all shapes and sizes.
@Shadowsadist As I said, I don`t think Hunter Parrish is a racist. But some of the remarks he makes here are undeniably unfortunate. The stereotype about dancing and the mentioning of both his parents still together, forinstance. I`m sure he didn`t mean it in an offensive way - but at the same time I understand why people take offence by such remarks. In life what you mean when you say something generally means less then what people perceives your meaning to be. Which your comment proves.;)
@Tvjunkieful12 Eh. I dun have anything against you (I don't think) but your initial response seemed defensive. I wasn't under the impression you thought he was racist at all. You seemed to be defending him. I was just explaining others' reactionary responses towards Parrish. Perhaps people are insecure about their parents breaking up. I have a friend who might be going through that (white) and up to this point have never thought of blacks as having only one parent.
@Shadowsadist Sorry, if I was unclear. I am just attempting getting across that it is possible to say something that will be perceived as a racist statement without actually being a racist. Why? Because of stereotypes. They are so common that must people use them without reflecting on why. Racist use them for offending, degrading or alienating groups or induviduals of another ethnicity. When representatives of such groups hear or read such statements, they automatically connect them to racism.:)
@Shadowsadist I have to answer in two parts - sorry about that. And I am sorry for your friend. When you say defensive, I assume you refers to the I`m not black part of my initial response. I wasn`t defensive at all, I was just trying to show that you didn`t have to be coloured to see the controvercy in Parrish` statement. Secondly. Maybe it is the age gap, or different parts of the world - but I wasn`t sure what you meant by statements like: they`re Jealous, and: white in a good way. Sorry.
@Tvjunkieful12 Are you black? I thought of you as white. I'm nto really trying to figure out too hard what you mean, so I don't believe I would be going about heavily misinterpreting it. I didn't know what you mean by "which your comment proves" awhile back either. I just go eh and move on. Perhaps that's what we should do when we feel offended. Dwell on the negative and your esteem is going to go down. Think about what makes you feel good. < Very general statement not directed towards you.
@Aspenfash899 He truely is a great actor. I don`t think we should judge him by one little unfortunate comment, that might even sound worse than it actually was. But I have to admit, I am a little surprised that nobody at the production company, or studio, behind the film this is related to, didn`t hear some warning bells, and arranged for him to shoot the interview again. Cause sterotypes like dancing and two parent family comparisons, isn`t the best PR for a movie promoting racial harmony.
Really, seriously, people are going to get offended by this? WTF? What happened to Americas society? It's bad enough that Obama is president (and no for all those that are wondering, that wasn't me being racist, that was my personal way of saying that our president is dumb as shit) but it gets even worse when ppl over-analyze shit and get a completely different message then what it's supposed to be. You're like the government; you take something simple and complicate it.
To all you who are saying that Hunter is being racist. In the movie, Freedom Writers, he is the only white kid in the class and all the other black, hispanic, and asian people in the movie had terrible lives in gangs. So for all you thinking he's racist, his words aren't coming from no where. And you should not just be listening to those words. His whole message in this video is very inspiring. Writing is a phenomenal way to rid yourself of stress, and just free your emotions.
Hunter's an amazing dancer! I saw him in Spring Awakening, his singing is even better. Not to mention that he's gorgeous. I love Freedom Writers. One of my fave movies.
what he's saying has nothing to do with black people. the stereotype for a white kid is a kid who gets things handed to him, lives in the suburbs, parents are together, etc. He is saying he is the stereotypical white kid, not black people don't have good lives.
Anyone who is *actually* offended at what this kid said reaaaaally needs to stop playing the racism card. Its getting old so fast, and less and less people are willing to even credit it anymore. It has now been used literally to the the point of absurdity. Please, do society a favor and find something fresh to get on the offensive about...
Like I have said on many occasions being color blind is not ignoring prejudice, nobody is saying he is a racist, he is merely racial insensitive, a quality of someone who has little experience viewing the world from a prism other than their own.
What he said is offensive because A he defines himself by his race, not by his character, and B he continues to explain sterotype as his race that differs from other races, which implicitly disparage said other races, ie black people.
He's not being particularly racist, neither is he claiming that's how all white people are. He's just making a statement related to the movie that may sound different from how he meant it. The problem only arises when people take stuff too seriously. He's not insulting anyone or putting any race down - people need to relax.
why are you people making such a big deal about this you all know that's not true but the media shows it to you and in movies even this movie and in songs you hear it, all rappers say i'm from the hood and all the white people supposed to can't dance and in other movies and tv shows you see the white people living in the suburbs, we all know that's not true but thats what we hear/see so don't complaign about that he said it, complaign about that the media shows that
instead of jumping down each others throats why dont you realize everyone is racist in some form. Just some like this guy are candid about it. But its these small things that build up, and they keep forming tension until it all snaps. And if it wasnt for this series of events this movie never would have happened.
So he has no soul because he's white? So is that saying that he thinks white people have no soul and that's why he has none? Um... sorry, dude, people have no soul who have no soul - black, white, yellow, or purple - makes no difference. Soul is soul, brother. Now get up and dance!
This damned Be Heard shit is defining "As White As It Gets" as having no "soul" or dance ability, married undeceased parents, and a nice suburbian home. I am white, and I do in fact have divorced parents, as does my mom, who is also white (Yes, white people have been getting divorces for some time now.) I don't live in the suburbs, and although I admit I can't dance, I do believe it is from my lack of wanting to do so. This definetly promotes racism.
Relax. Racism is not propagated by people like him, but by people who over analyze every detail of every word from someone else. He didn't say anything with negativity. Don't create tension where there is none.
I mean... I just do not think it is appropriate for the directors of this movie to promote with commercials with someone saying... 'I'm white. Oh yeah. I'm so white because...[insert stereotypical excuses here.]' I'd actually frown upon that any time. You are your color because the amount of melanin in your body was predetermined by your genes. No one should slap on other reasons because those reasons just aren't a fact.
Chill the fuck out man, look what he was saying, I believe that this is what he ment... how people look at a normal white kid is someone in the suburbs with normal parents and no dancing skills... so chill the fuck out and don't over analyze shit too much ^^
Oh, go and fuck yourself. I am white as hell and have married, undeceased parents and a nice suburban home. As for dancing to rap-ass bullshit, I can't and I WON'T.
Now here is something for you to really get pissy about: I have black, asian and hispanic friends, but I am proud to be white. Put that in you pipe and smoke it.
i think that's great. :) that's what makes a writer (not that i'm claiming to know what I'm talking about -- 'cause i don't) i just used to feel the same way about writing.
Who started it? There had to be rappers to be immitated, then, there has to be a ghetto for the rappers to talk about. They have to have something to write about. I think people just don't like to admit there are impoverished places still, and that's why you're not going to see this movie. You don't want to hear about it.
Oh my god.. Is anybody in here, just to finde quotes there can be interprete into racist things? By saying "I'm as white as it gets.." is he just admitting that he is like the stereo type of a white male (or caucasian, if you better like that), as there probably is some there thinks. I'm a caucasian girl, from Denmark, how growe up in the suburb to Copehagen and I can't, even though I try, dance.
this doesnt promote racism at all its saying its ok to have your views on people but obviously its not right to judge in public. And its good that he has seen something good in another race (the dancing aspect) because it shows how we can be influenced by them.
the very fact that you associate culture with skin color is already discriminatory. racism is not about what you think is good or bad about people around you, its about any assumptions you make based on race that are factually inaccurate. example: "White people can't dance." a message that promotes equality would not focus on the differences between races, but the similarities...
fair enough like the video states we are open to our opinion and i respect yours but i still feel that he was just expressing himself through his videos and writting :)
I don't like how he's playin up to being white, as if he's apologising for it. how can racism ever get wiped out if people still insist on creating reasons why other cultures are different or superior, seriously.
I'm white, I can dance... my parents arn't together.. yes I came from the burbs but fuck.. this video is so fake.. all of these "Be Heard" videos are lame..
great..mr actor.. i like to journal? is he serious.. wow, u feel better when u write shit down and no one reads it. placin bets, anyone?? 20 bucks, in less than a yr., he writes down, he blew a kid in the suburbs, and he thinks hes gay. But i guess will never find out, cause he likes to journal it!!
i though it was funny, i express myself by telling people what i feel. actors need a script or journal it, please..i like to connect, thats living!!!journal it, see how far that gets u...
Secondly he's not saying white people can't dance, which is the perception you eager beavers want to take in so you can simply state your lame flaming rhetorics.
He's merely saying he can't dance, that was the point of he's statement.,
yup - i was thinking, all these videos ive seen similar to this - why are they all good lookin/decent looking people. why not one ugly person? then yea ur conclusion got me - ADVERTISING!!! exploiting everything in the world is horrible isnt it
dude don't judge no one by their cover. I don't think just anyone can get up in front of a camera and put themselves out on a limb so I give him props for that
he's not, he's an actor, he got paid for this, and he probably had to read a premise script before they shot this...quite a limb, huh? or when you said props did you mean that as in character tools?
Whether he realizes it or not, he just said white = two parents, etc. I don't think he meant to offend anyone by it, though. I think many white people feel the need to apologise for their lives. They feel guilty.
Do u classify a fag as sum1 who knows who they r or is it just that u fear people who r in touch with their emotions. What happened in ur childhood that u feel the need 2 insult other people for their honesty. Is it 2 confrontational 4 u? Dont watch the vid's with positive titles. U must feel so alone in ur misery. Do u really hate urself that much that u need 2 diss others. I was like u once, but i realised i was only ruining myself, no1else cared.
i classify sum 1 as a fag by the way they dress and how womanly they r. lmao u fink ur a psychiatrist u dont no me. u cant judge me by a comment i put on u tube lmao
we do not need rasial lables, we are can well with lables such as, they are nice, they are bad, they are careying, thoughs are the lables people should use. NOT, black, white, etc, feel me?
White guilt... "I grew up in the suburbs, I can't dance..." Teenagers these days feel so important, and they are, if you are talking to 6th graders. A hard dose of the adult reality and they become protesting Liberals until they are about 30. After that, they understand what life is about, start making good money because they are working hard and then they come around. Take off your Rose-colored specs, kid.
okay... but what's the viral market this is insidiously directly towards (there is one, after all, given such a slick set of ultra-produced videos...)
Excellent. I don't even know this young man, but judging on his comments and outlook on life, he will go far. We need more people with concise thought like this.
Wtf is wrong with america? cant believe white kids are picked on by the media, you make me sick all i hear from america is white boy this white boy that. I hate your obnoxious culture!!
hahahaahaha im white, i live in the suberbs,my parents arent divorced, i like to write in a journal and not offend people, my names hunter. one day ill have a mid-life crisis and kill everyone in seven eleven
true true. Im white. Im from the country AND the city. Not the 'burbs... A split family is all I have... heh, and sometimes... I can dance pretty good too. Peoples just gotta drop the labels and start worrying about the important things in life. Peace out
I tried writing, but I cant express myself. I can produce work that people find amazing, but it does nothing for me, whether its lyrics for my music or an essay, or like he says, a journal. I've tried art and drawing but I still feel hindered and frustrated. Maybe its just me, but I dont feel words or pictures can capture what goes on in my mind. Heh, I guess my imagination is just too big for any current medium... words, paper, or otherwise
i hope more people do this in tge world and not throw away their lives. here's a message to all the kids in these unfortunate places: stay clean and express YOURself
He was simply stating the stereotype for many white people, and I'm pretty sure he knew that by the tone of his voice. Just from interviews and such, I doubt he actually believes any of those stereotypes :)

@Tvjunkieful12 Duuude. They're jealous. All of them.
He says he's as white as it gets. But he doesn't seem to be racist, sexist or any of those following things. He's all white in a good way.
In their eyes, he's only white in the american fantasy. Confident, hot, blond, jock like etc.
So they try and mix him with that other stereotype of white people, because they're the ones who are biased.
I think flatly they are disappointed how un-emo he is.

fair enough like the video states we are open to our opinion and i respect yours but i still feel that he was just expressing himself through his videos and writting :)
understated2 5 years ago

But i guess will never find out, cause he likes to journal it!!
tonybazNYC1 5 years ago
theres nothing wrong with writing down your thoughts..helped me out of a bad depression
redshift912 5 years ago
writing as a form of reflection is an incredibly good way to relieve stress. your comment is incredibly ignorant.
verrow 5 years ago
i though it was funny, i express myself by telling people what i feel. actors need a script or journal it, please..i like to connect, thats living!!!journal it, see how far that gets u...

rhysISpro 5 years ago
Sounds cool, If your a writer you'll understand.
Secondly he's not saying white people can't dance, which is the perception you eager beavers want to take in so you can simply state your lame flaming rhetorics.
He's merely saying he can't dance, that was the point of he's statement.,
dreamEternal 5 years ago
Saying, "...I'm as white as it gets, I can't dance...blah blah blah"
That's as racist as saying only blacks hold up petrol stations.
Both are stereo types.
Wrong message, wrapped up in a pseudo positive envelope.

dude don't judge no one by their cover. I don't think just anyone can get up in front of a camera and put themselves out on a limb so I give him props for that
boarder2789 5 years ago
he's not, he's an actor, he got paid for this, and he probably had to read a premise script before they shot this...quite a limb, huh? or when you said props did you mean that as in character tools?
rhysISpro 5 years ago
Whether he realizes it or not, he just said white = two parents, etc. I don't think he meant to offend anyone by it, though. I think many white people feel the need to apologise for their lives. They feel guilty.

jenkz16 5 years ago
Do u classify a fag as sum1 who knows who they r or is it just that u fear people who r in touch with their emotions. What happened in ur childhood that u feel the need 2 insult other people for their honesty. Is it 2 confrontational 4 u? Dont watch the vid's with positive titles. U must feel so alone in ur misery. Do u really hate urself that much that u need 2 diss others. I was like u once, but i realised i was only ruining myself, no1else cared.

What does him 'being white' have anything to do with writing and expressing himself?
Also, when differentiating himself from <i>the damn blacks</i> he said 'my parents are still together'. That was offensive.

true true. Im white. Im from the country AND the city. Not the 'burbs... A split family is all I have... heh, and sometimes... I can dance pretty good too. Peoples just gotta drop the labels and start worrying about the important things in life. Peace out
halftrak 5 years ago
I tried writing, but I cant express myself. I can produce work that people find amazing, but it does nothing for me, whether its lyrics for my music or an essay, or like he says, a journal. I've tried art and drawing but I still feel hindered and frustrated. Maybe its just me, but I dont feel words or pictures can capture what goes on in my mind. Heh, I guess my imagination is just too big for any current medium... words, paper, or otherwise
halftrak 5 years ago
You just "expressed yourself" and you may not find it means anything to you but ya never know what it might mean to someone else.
