@jejeroy i assume your referring to the Xerox PARC Alto computer, which was never commercially available which makes the Lisa OS the first GUI 'on the market' but the Alto has the first GUI.
As Steve Balmer has admitted, Apple has the better business model... they make the software and the hardware. Think about how many different computers Windows have to run on. And a lot of these computers are put together using the cheapest components available. For the most part, it seems Microsoft doesn't really care how bad the user's experience is. Apple, although not perfect, cares a great deal about the user's experience.
You gotta love how that dog out-acts Costner in this ad. A stellar performance by "Marmaduke" or whatever his name was. Costner is living proof that in movies, it ain't how well you act, but how aesthetically pleasing your face and body are that counts. Why else do you think Katie Holmes and Jennifer Love Hewitt still get work?
Apple has being playing the same game since day one, selling you a piece of crap that needs more hardware to be as good as their competitors but still we all fall for it, I have an iPhone and an iMac and they expect you to pay for every app and program. The problem with the Lisa was the Mac, the problem with the Mac was that to write software for it you needed the Lisa, making developing for a PC much cheaper. Also compared to the Mac the Lisa was extremly slow, running multitasking with an high-level OS on a 5MHz M68k, while the Mac used a single tasked assembly beauty on a 7MHz M68k. Also despite the MMU a single program could take down the entire Lisa due to its Co-op multitasking. On the other hand the document-oriented thing was nice.
Apple Lisa!! I have a copy of a magazine article from that era that, even before the introduction of the Macintosh, said that this kind of graphic-user-interface was the future and would be soon become part of much less expensive computers by other companies.

@daguangrong yeah there was a huge wireless fad around that time. Like the IBM PCjr, wireless keyboard. Most of it was bad though, it was all done with IR like TV remotes.

And then you had the amiga by commadore that was the top graphic computer then. Apple just stayed in the market as the other companies fell out in the 80's recession.

Apple probably considers itself too good for mere Video Games... Guess that's why PC still kicks it's ass in the gaming department too.. I wish they had of decided to make a games console that was legally blocked from entering the American market.. that way they would gone Bankrupt... LONG LIVE THE COMMODORE(specifically the C64)... and LONG LIVE THE COMMODORE AMIGA(specifically the A500)!
Also loved the work of parent company Commodore.. sad to say Apple survived and it's main competitor.... a much better company in my opinion, died because of a bad idea to try and break into the re-birthed Nintendo/Playstation dominated console games market.

@RenatusUpborne Have you used Winblows? No, it is by no means reliable. Not unless you actually enjoy messing with and/or fixing things, which I don't. If you do, great. But what I pay for should work with a minimum of fuss and for a long time. Winblows (and Linux, for the computer nerds out there) fails on both counts. I understand computers well enough, I just choose to have one that simply works when and how I want it to with an active minimum of down time.

If you have a PC that is constantly needing repairs then it's the user, not the OS, that is causing problems. Of course ordinary people are going to be dumb about computers, they shouldn't have to be computer nerds in order to use one. A consumer product has to take user error into account in its design. PCs, particularly Winblows machines, don't. Which means they exist so computer repair shops can stay open.
Whenever this ad was broadcast, almost no one had even seen a mouse, or a graphical user interface. So now, the only impact we are left with is "OMG COSTNER SO YOUNG!!1!!!"

@daguangrong yeah there was a huge wireless fad around that time. Like the IBM PCjr, wireless keyboard. Most of it was bad though, it was all done with IR like TV remotes.

@ThePatrykfilm9000 That's not really true, there were several computer brands at that time that were better at multi media then apples. The atari xl line had incredible music and graphics. And then you had the amiga by commadore that was the top graphic computer then. Apple just stayed in the market as the other companies fell out in the 80's recession.

Apple probably considers itself too good for mere Video Games... Guess that's why PC still kicks it's ass in the gaming department too.. I wish they had of decided to make a games console that was legally blocked from entering the American market.. that way they would gone Bankrupt... LONG LIVE THE COMMODORE(specifically the C64)... and LONG LIVE THE COMMODORE AMIGA(specifically the A500)!

I had an Amiga 500... best computer I ever had.
Also loved the work of parent company Commodore.. sad to say Apple survived and it's main competitor.... a much better company in my opinion, died because of a bad idea to try and break into the re-birthed Nintendo/Playstation dominated console games market.
I loved Amiga and I dont like Apple as a "1984"-like corporation.

If Commodore and Amiga were still around computers would be so much better today. The Amiga was the best graphics computer back in its day, 4,096 colors,a TRUE multitasking GUI, 4 channel stereo sound,and its own powerful custom chips.

@Blockygraphics Just to clarify "Windows 95 was the joke to me back in 1995, not the Amiga" .. ;) although it was a VERY interesting time in Computing! actually THE best time in computing for me personally was right through 80's and up until about 1998, then it all went ...erghhhh SHIT... for me.

@Blockygraphics I of course no longer use the Amiga though but at the time of Windows 95's release, it was a complete joke to me, but today of course i can no longer argue the point because Windows has become "the" standard and the rants an raves of my youth and early 20's are now over. Windows still could have been A LOT better than what it is today but its a huge improvement of the piece of shit that was Windows 3.1 :)

@Blockygraphics Completely agree that no OS is completely flawless and infallible and to claim that one particular OS is the best there is or has been is completely working on bias on of the individual in question and not through any logic or common sense.
Although one "may" be able to stipulate that a particular OS has better functionality in general terms on the whole than another such as greater stability.etc, hence the reason why i stuck with the Amiga for many years instead of Windows ;)

When the time spent using vs fixing a particular investment crosses the 2:1 mark, I figure I got kind of ripped off no matter how much I paid. @RenatusUpborne Have you used Winblows? No, it is by no means reliable. Not unless you actually enjoy messing with and/or fixing things, which I don't. If you do, great. But what I pay for should work with a minimum of fuss and for a long time. Winblows (and Linux, for the computer nerds out there) fails on both counts. I understand computers well enough, I just choose to have one that simply works when and how I want it to with an active minimum of down time.

Infact I find it rather frustrating all the things you CANT do on apple products, not because it's not capable of it, but because steve jobs says you aren't allowed to. Apple's 1984 commercial is extremely ironic when you consider how it is the very evil it claims to be against. Even the simpsons agrees.

@ReinnResauq The windows is unreliable bit should have died back in 2001 when XP was released. If you have a PC that is constantly needing repairs then it's the user, not the OS, that is causing problems. Now excuse me while I go play Brink and replace my Western Digital hard drive with one made by Samsung.

@tharock220 It should have died back in 1995 when Windows 95 was released, but Redmond hasn't stopped producing junk since. The trend of blaming users has got to end. Of course ordinary people are going to be dumb about computers, they shouldn't have to be computer nerds in order to use one. A consumer product has to take user error into account in its design. PCs, particularly Winblows machines, don't. Which means they exist so computer repair shops can stay open.
