  • That's a massive display of recipicating energy amost comparable to the largest pistons on the largest ship engines. This really graphically shows the violent recipicating energy of those push arms. I am assuming preventing those arms breaking is number one safety priority for these mechanics.

  • This thing was haulin' some serious ass.

  • The US is lucky, steam's only aloud to top 70mph :[

  • The 844, 3986, 6936, 949, 963B and 951 are all rated for 82 mph in the employee's system special instructions.

  • Thats what i like to see.Shes structing her stuff here.Did you guys notice that shes not making alot of smoke.I have a model of this locomotive in o gauge by mth trains.

  • Some of those old steam engines cn haul a 15 car passenger train 100 mph... 90 was not unusual if they were running late (Prairies, of course)

  • I wanna see a UP 844 and MILW 261 double-header. That would be amazing. Great clip btw. That thing can fly!

  • That was an excellent video except that it wasn't long enough! Wouldn't it be cool to be riding inside the loco?

  • I believe it. I was pulling 103 MPH through Oklahoma to catch it after getting stuck in F-ing Claremore!

  • @Hiei2k7 : as for Steam Pacing NW (J) 611 -> Well, by hearing the rhytme of the 80'' diameter drivers, you are able to calculate the speed. Where I'm counting some 330 strokes per minute .., so with the rotating frequency f = n/60 = 5,5 Hz, regarding on the circumference of those (4) D-wheels, you'll get : v = 5.5 x π.D = 5,5 .π.(0.8 x 2,54) = 35.1 m/s or ca. 126.4 km/h or else some 79 mph ... Hopefully at your service (-: dAb +>

  • @daborgdorff

I also had the defect detector programmed into my scanner. I cheated.

'course, when you get stuck 5 minutes behind it in Claremore, OK, gotta floor it to get back up with it.

  • that is a bad ass loco

  • Why does the 844 have the large steel shrouds on on each side of the engine at the front?

  • @8dakota6 These are smoke deflectors also called "elephant ears. Ram air from front goes up and helps smoke go up and over the cab to keep crew out of worst of smoke escecially in tunnels.

  • @bdogolddave Thanks for the information. Now I know about the shrouds. Thanks!

  • Thats just awsome. She can go faster too, much faster. Chasing her recently we were going bout 85 to get ahead and I turned around to my dismay to see she was gaining on us, and fast! Luckly she came to a curve and slowed down. My first time ever seeing a Mainline steamengine go that fast.

  • Flyin'!

  • amazing power to match even the best we have today to bad they wear so labor intencive I chatted with an old steam engnieer wene I used to clean a railyard locker room holy fuck dirty sinks

  • Like to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid catch- THAT -Baby .

  • was he hauling the DD40AX because the dd40ax was only geared for 70 mph

im not trying to be accusitive just asking

  • @Amtrak1194 Nope only the 844 on this trip

  • @Amtrak1194 The DDA40X was designed with a top speed of 83 mph.

  • @Amtrak1194 Wait A min, i thought the DDA40X was geared for 90mph! But i could b wrong.

  • Speed like the cadillac.

  • Before the Mustang, the GTO, or the Corvette, this was THE original American Muscle.

  • @operazanotaijin amen to that.

  • I once rode behind Reading 2102 at 79 MPH on the Lackawanna Cutoff back in 1972. And she has 70" drivers for dual service compared to 844's 80" drivers!

  • Think if a Rod came off ! NICE CLIP !

  • that doesnt happen

  • I will testify that it is true, as i was right there in the chase as she tore past I-80
