And it is discriminating in the sense that you tell people they are not good enough to be married like everyone else. The reason why people are fighting against gay marriage is that they want their marriage to be sacred. When the secular government administers marriages, you don't get to drag 'sacred' into it. Religious marriage is up to each individual church to decide. Secular contract marriage is nothing to do with those churches whatsoever.

No one who disagrees with bigotry against gays is "lost". If either of my children turned out to be gay, they know that I would continue to love them unconditionally. Also, I belong to a church that accepts gay people and offers them unconditional love. The gay people that have befriended my family are truly wonderful people, and I believe that standing up for their rights is the moral thing to do.

Massachusetts has not been ramming gay marriage anywhere. They sent a book home, which happened to show, as one of about 20 illustrations of different types of family, a gay household. The book also showed mixed race families, single parent families and lots of what you would probably call 'normal' families.

I had a friend who was beaten up for being gay. There are people who have been hounded out of their jobs for coming out (many of the anti-gay posters on here propose that gay teachers should be sacked). There have been people killed for being gay (Matthew Shephard is the obvous example, but there are many more).

It is not fair to let a large group of people decide the rights of any given minority, which is exactly what happened with prop 8. It was a dark day for USA and I'm glad to see there's at least some sense left in the courtrooms.

@madnessdexter No, they don't. I don't live in California but from what I've gathered, the gay wedding still has legal disadvantages if compared to the straight one. And it is discriminating in the sense that you tell people they are not good enough to be married like everyone else. It is as much a symbolic thing as it is a legal problem - being denied the right to marry will only serve to further infuriate and marginalize homosexuals.

The reason why people are fighting against gay marriage is that they want their marriage to be sacred. The pro gay marriage should be focusing their fights on legal rights and benefits for gay couples rather then getting the definition of "married". But no one wants to budge.

Most religious people forget some core values such as the Golden Rule in order to actively put down those people they don't like because they are "wrong." No one who disagrees with bigotry against gays is "lost". If either of my children turned out to be gay, they know that I would continue to love them unconditionally. Also, I belong to a church that accepts gay people and offers them unconditional love. The gay people that have befriended my family are truly wonderful people, and I believe that standing up for their rights is the moral thing to do.

The legal rights of civil partnership are not the same as marriage. A civil partenership in California will not be recognised elsewhere in the USA. Marriage, however, is recognised across state borders (apart from in backward states which have outlawed recognition of gay marriages).
I would also like to know what is more important than 'the pursuit of happiness' as enshrined in the declaration of independence.

It is an obvious benefit to the state for gay people to be in happy, fulfilled and stable relationships. As I said below, 'the pursuit of happiness' was used as the key argument to support interracial marriage.
Gay marriage is nothing to do with 'reprogramming schoolchildren'. However, it is to be hoped that by supporting gay marriage, and showing that gay people are valued, the government will change attitudes and help prevent homophobic bullying, abuse, beatings and even death.

Of course it is up to gay people to create commitment. It is the government's job to support that commitment in the same way they would support commitment between two straight people.
Your argument about 'forcing' language is not a correct one. It would be just as easy to argue that those voting 'Yes' on proposition 8, are 'forcing' their view of marriage onto the population and that the religious are trying to focre their way of life onto the state (which is separate from religion).

To call a gay union, marriage, is to make an assertion that their differences are irrelevant. That is preaching a value/dogma. Massachusetts has not been ramming gay marriage anywhere. They sent a book home, which happened to show, as one of about 20 illustrations of different types of family, a gay household. The book also showed mixed race families, single parent families and lots of what you would probably call 'normal' families.
I am not sure what the problem is with that. Would you rather teach children that gay people should be discriminated against. I'm afraid gay coiuples and families are a fact of life.

Yes, they have. They had a book called King and King read to them, and the teacher tells them they could marry the same sex if they wanted. They send an entire "diversity package" home. They have to sign a paper in kindgergarten that they'll be friends to gays and lesbians. And if catholics would rather see kids who desperately need homes not be adopted at all, then I would have to question their morality.
There is plenty of evidence that shows kids do better with two gay parents than in state care.
In the 1960s, many people said that placing kids with mixed race couples was amoral - how wrong they were.

Your question was how does it affect my rights? Have you done any research on this besides thinking of yourself? In Mass. there has been a lot of turmoil over this,the Catholic church had to stop offering adoption servicesbecause they were being sued for not placing kids in gay homes. Doesn't the church or anyone else besides gays have the right to their beliefs? The Catholic church and all its members LOST the right to determine a fit home as the see it, so that gays could get legally married.

what have you been though? If you are a minority and you agree with discriminating against another minority its just despicable. I am jewish, i know whats its like. I have been denied jobs, threatened, assaulted, intimidated. christians are very very hostile toward us. It doesnt even compare to what my grand mother went though in germany. SHe survived a christian pogrom, crystalnight. And she survived 4 years in the dachau. those are the reasons i dont agree with any discrimination anywhere.

I had a friend who was beaten up for being gay. There are people who have been hounded out of their jobs for coming out (many of the anti-gay posters on here propose that gay teachers should be sacked). There have been people killed for being gay (Matthew Shephard is the obvous example, but there are many more).

I'm afraid that asking us all to move away sounds a bit like Hitler telling the Jews that if they dont like it in Germany they can clear off somewhere else.
I would also add that I spend a lot of time fundraising for poverty relief in the developing world. So don't assume that we are all only interested in gay rights.
There are many injustices in the world - one of them (and not necessarily the most important) being anti-gay discrimination.

However, proposition 8 is not just an 'opinion' it is a law which prevents a minority group from having equal rights and pursuit of happiness.

If Gay marriage is legalized, the federal government would lose billions of dollars. It's not a moral/religious issue; it's a money thing!
