its based around The Plague by Albert Camus which was about the Nazis during the war. the guitar on this is fabulous too. what a great song and singer !!! (-:;
I can't help but think that Peter Murphy (which I like) had Scott Walker songs playing while he wrote a lot of his solo material. Anyone else hear the resemblance???
What a marvellous dramatic production!!! why cant they produce more songs like this now with all the high tech, I love the spooky guitar especially (-: Love to see him collaborate with Mike Oldfield, now that would be something!!!
my favorite style of music is the heavily orchestrated work of bowie walker and the moody blues(to a certain extent)- they just dont do it like this today- dark menacing beautiful and full of dense melodies Walker was the master of this - seventh seal- the old mans back again - aint no sunshine cover etc- The verve tried it to some success but not with this menace and impeccable arrangement and perfection- walker was /is a genius!
Scott Walker may have alienated even his most devout fans with his recent efforts, but I see it as just a natural progression for such a visonary. His sound is on a totally different plateaux. Obviously there is underlying greatness when the likes of David Bowie, Sylvian, and Brian Eno are professed fans and listen to his work for inspiration. Just listen to the demanding nature and urgency of his 60's song 'NITE FLIGHTS'. Truly an otherworldly masterpiece, covered by Bowie. Both r great.
I totally agree. This song would be ahead of its time if it were written today! The fact it was written in 1967 just proves what an incredible visionary Scott was (and is). The Plague is seriously underrated and unappreciated, IMHO. Who says Scott can't rock?
@janicead Yeah exactly, I would have loved him to do more songs like this or beef the arrangements of his other songs up like this. I love the guitar and Reverb on this. It's like the Walker Brothers meets Hendrix, crossed with a funky gothic exploitation soundrtrack. Really sureal and Still sounds revolutionary today : )

This wasn't ahead of its time. It's completely of its time. It sounds like a Deep Purple song, albeit an unusually good one.

I love the way the echo is faded on the "Lalalalala" section from 3.13. Haunting.
Also, the drums on this track are beautifully played (and recorded). Incredible.

His voice here reminds me a lot the way David Eugene Edwards of Woven Hand sings!!

@psychodamned Amazing way of summing up the sound. Almost as if you took the words out of my mouth.
Superb. Unlike anything produced today. This kind of music probably takes more effort and skill than people want to put into the music made now.
