All you have to do is use a wrench to unscrew the bolt, and turn it on...the motor will push the antenna out of the car because it will not be stopped by the bolt, it's simple, no more antenna.
how do you take off the black knob on the tip of the antenna? im assuming that is the only way to remove the mast or shaft, correct me if theres another.

Yes, it doesn't make any difference if you unplug the antenna. Just remeber that if you remove it you will have a hole in your quarter panel.
