There are at least three or four different ways that I can think of offhand in ASL alone to say "I love you", not including signing out the individual words, and not including the fact that like any language, there are colloquialisms--phrase (signs) used in very specific geographic areas and not seen elsewhere.

Good television writers use things about the actors or skills they have in the stories. Mark Harmon signed for 2 years in a series called Reasonable Doubts co-starring with Marlee Matlin - the Oscar winning actress who is deaf. I'm sure Pauley and Mark ended up signing on the set and the writers put it in the series. I hope they come up with a cool reason that Gibbs knows it is some future story.

I would call their relationship more playful than flirty. The characters love each other - I would not say father daughter. Gibbs is more avuncular to Abby (just as Ducky is).

Frankly what makes NCIS work is not the action/drama so much as the familial/romantic relationships between the characters.

abfirefighterchick: My Uncle was a Navy Seal, and my Uncle's friend was a Marine. (Both fought in Vietnam) They said it was required to learn certain sign language. So it's possible Gibbs learned it from that. Most Marine/Navy hand signs are very similar to ASL. I was taught some of the things that my Uncle and his friend knew. :) It really ticked my Mother off though. XD!

Oh I agree, that's what I posted earlier as well. My thought was that he probably had some more influence in the language beyond just that. Most likely they would stick to more basic signs to use for survival/combat.

When Tony asked him where he learned it in 'Sea Dog' he ignored him. Usually if it was a Marine training skill he would tell him(when he asked him about other things he could do)so I figured that there was a more personal connection to it as well.

Actually, Abby's Mother was deaf, it never says her Father is. Therefore, her Father isn't deaf. Her Mother was, and they comunicated through singing.

Gibbs was in the Marines, and in the Marines, Navy, Army and National Guard, they're taught to sign language to comunicate if they can't through words. :) So yes it is a part of Marine training.

If he only knows it because of being a Marine then it would be called MSL, (Marine Sign Language),it is what Snipers use between each other.

I am guessing that a lot of signs are similar but with the amount he knows I would guess that he learned ASL or Signed English somewhere.

Plus, in 'Sea Dog' Tony asks him how he knows sign language and he wouldn't answer him because it is personal, if it was just something he learned in the Marines he would have probably said so.

Maybe you're mixing things up. Abby did grow up with deaf parents but Pauley didn't. Pauley loves sign language, though, but she's not fluent. She only knows a few signs because of her deaf friends :)
