@driftsilvia16 it refers to the amount of angles cut on the valve. Standard stuff will have a 45 degree angle cut into the valve. 3 valve will have a 30', 45', 60' or to some variation of angles. This aids in flow into the cylinder.
@CrikeyMang kk well its only one side and the engine temp is fine everything is ok keep in mind that this is a75 ranchero she runs like a champ strong burns a tiny bit of oil but thats normal i can push it up to 110 with out a problem probably 120 but i wont put that stress on her... sh has a tick from pasengers side case..
@chamblizi if the tick is on the bottom end its more than likely a rod bearing. Top side it will be a valve. 351W? Either way its good to adjust the valves once a year on them older engines. If its never been done since the factory you will see a noticable difference. Its not very hard to do and recommended. If you leave it unattended it will prematurely wear or even break. If you need the info just let me know. I can refer some good links. Cheers :D
if you're doing an overhaul on a high-mileage engine, why not just buy new valves and springs? Even if they're still good, they're probably worked and re-treated pretty good from all of the movement and heating over time...
good basic vid.....the straight edge he is using will detect major warpage but for very slight warpage a agree a precision straight edge of some sort is required still like the vid though.
I just had the heads on my mustang done professionaly. They were warped so badly that when the machiner set them on the ground they would actualy rock a little. They ground off so much when resurfacing the decks that I got about and extra 20 HP.
@Broccolidiesel It's a 90 degree carpenter's square...which is also not a precision straightedge. Compare one to an actual precision straightedge and you'll see why nobody should be using one to check flatness.
AMAZING VID.... GOOD JOB... I WANA KNOW IS THERE ANY SOLVENT OR OIL... WHICH I CAN DRAIN THE TOXIC`S OR CARBON INSIDE MY CAR..... HELP NEEDED URGENT... HAVE HEARD OF SEAFOAM...WHAT DO U SUGGEST ? WITHOOUT REMOVING THE ENGINE HEAD OFF.
To reface a valve I chuck it into an electric hand drill preferably the keyless type. With a little grease on my hand I let the stem ride in my hand and put it against the grind wheel. You can watch the face and it will be bright where you are grinding. Move drill in or out to get right angle on face. It doesn't have to be exact. I have done this for over 50 yrs and haven't had a problem yet. You can get the feel by grinding some old valves. Check seating by lapping valves
hmm.. def a diesel head, probably from a Ford IDI 6.9 or 7.3.. on 4:40 you can get a good view of what looks like the swirl chamber; the swirl chamber is where the injector nozzle, and glow plug were located on the IDI engines. never use ether on an IDI (so our fleet mechanic told me) that chamber can fill with ether and explode, knocking out the bottom of the chamber, and then it bounces around inside the cylinder he said.. but w/e we used ether for years problem free, lol
That is a diesel head. Ford tractor I think. I use a drill to seat valves. also use a drill and bench grinder to regrind them. Don't tell me it doesn't work I have been doing that for 50 yrs.I do clean everything up before I even look at it.
for all the people that say this guy is redneck and doing things wrong etc. so what, i resurface my cylinder heads with a belt sander, so what its simple and it works and i have done it at least 6 times and never had one blow a headgasket.
Excellent video, I have always wondered how to do that. Do you have to put the exact valves and springs back in place where they came or does that matter? 5 star video.
@DIOSpeedDemon I always keep the valves, etc. in order, you never know what could be amiss if you mix up valves & other parts that are 'used' to being run in different locations... same thing with flat tappet lifters.
@the5445 They're not Chevy heads, that's for sure...
I thought the video contained a useful overview of a BASIC valve job. Good job.

@fortune300 diesels dont have combustion chambers hoss...they got firing decks..nto being a dick..just saying

However, the informations at the end concerning the precision bar is.. stupid..

so whats the difference between a 3 angle and a 5 angle job? Im guessing the 5 angle will give you more air flow

That ruler is pointless for checking flatness. They're not made to any level of precision. You need an actual precision straight edge.
mkerna 1 year ago 19
@mkerna~ dude, this guy is useless!.... continue on to a video with CORRECT information. lol.
its0a0me 1 year ago
@mkerna "You need an actual precision straight edge"
You also need a feeler gauge.
jjenson2006 11 months ago
@mkerna thats not a ruler.. its a 90 degree square.. he just doesnt let you see the dog leg part. So it is a precision edge.
Broccolidiesel 5 months ago
@Broccolidiesel well usually you'd use a straight edge PLUS using a feeler gauge to probe under the straight edge.

not putting a drill on the valves to seat them -_-
sk8er51472 1 year ago
A "Valve job" involves regrinding the valve face, and regrinding or cutting fresh seats. This is a teardown and inspection.
