meshuggah would be the last band to "drag", even though I'm quite sure you don't mean in the tempo sense that I am refering to. Their songs are long and if you get bored near the end of their songs, which I never do, then you aren't in love with the music, which I always am. I believe if you feel what their feeling and put yourself in thier shoes.. act as if you are Thomas Haake feel exactly where he is placing the beat and eventually you'll see/feel the same as I do.
@ArtificialFlavaFTB2 These guys are so sick. Download/buy their albums in order starting from Destroy Erase Improve.. experience their sound and how it evolves and warp-fucks you in the brain.
I like meshuggah, but my biggest complaint is that their songs are pretty repetitive. There is usually only one riff over and over, and since many of their songs are around 8 minutes, they can really start to drag because of this.
@ShredopiA I've been playing guitar for 3 years and am currently collaborating in a black/folk metal project. Meshuggah just sucks. They focus too much on being uber technical and having polyrhythms all over the place that they forgot to write good memorable music. In other words, Meshuggah is soulless musical masturbation. I don't give a shit how "complex" it is; that doesn't make up for the fact that the music itself sounds like ass. Technical ability doesn't make up for abysmal music.
@BrimstoneLandscapes ... No... Research what they do and why they do it before claiming falsities such as this. You can easily tell even by the lyrics that this band is nothing like what you describe.
@milesmeloro What do lyrics have to do with anything? If you think that mere lyrics can prove me wrong when I say that Meshuggah is all technique, no depth then you're seriously delusional.
@BrimstoneLandscapes The point of their music is to represent disillusionment and chaos, using odd techniques (that are presently as complex as most other forms of extreme metal); therefore your first claim is incorrect. They don't focus on use of polyrhythmic techniques, as everything they do is based on a 4/4 pattern; therefore your second claim is incorrect. ObZen is one of their most memorable albums, with songs like Combustion and Bleed; therefore your third claim is incorrect. [...]
@BrimstoneLandscapes You can claim all you want, but we know you're just trying to troll Meshuggah fans because you don't like the music. I could easily say that black metal is a solid repetition of the same horror techniques and doesn't slightly live up to its music in the early 90s, but I'm not hostile.
Meshuggah is a never ending machine that drives into your brain. They may sound the same but are not...That's why they are one of a kind, not really a "hit" band, just a non stop feeling through out all of the albums. Grinding over and over. Trust me Meshuggah is a machine.
@eleventhsun Agreed, but there wearing thin now, unfortunately (or maybe for the better) they've only risen to respectable, dignified fame since about 2004? I didn't hear about them until 2008, I thought they had 3 albums, obZen, Catch 33 and Nothing, then you unlock Chaosphere, FBM, Contradictions collape, None EP, I EP, Futile Breed Machine EP, Phycik Tesbuild EP. Hell Jens is 44 and the rest are 41 or 42, they should end on a high, like with the next album, not contine until 2020 = Caracature
Rational Gaze. The first Meshuggah song I ever heard. With those mind-bending rythems and Jens brutal lyrics, that's all it took to get me hooked. Now I have a love for ALL equally. So fuckin' hard.
One song people always forget is "I" . It is so genius, and most definitely has the most brutal riff/drum beat/guitar solo combined out of anything meshuggah has ever written. I know that CD was released on an independent label, and it was supposedly the sketches for the forthcoming Catch 33 back in the day, but it doesn't make the song in any way weak.
@glebvic yeah definetly agreed...if we are thinking the same thing its the song that goes for fucking 21 minutes...dont know if you think that but that song is sooo epic...
@glebvic i was random, at least some parts were random. so it wasnt as genius as you think. i hear they made it just to live out their contract with their label
I hated Meshuggah when I first heard it a while back. Listened to a bit more...and now I'm obsessed.
