I bet she lost to her only because she underestimated her, what a pity, what a chance she missed, maybe it was set by destiny because she doesn't deserve to be like other players who won 4 slams in one year.
fyi!hingis beat the williams sisters so many times..why not review their head to head before you run to a very unfair conclusions!hingis had 4 match points against capriates, she even hit more winners compare to capriate.. during hingis comeback she and beat venus almost twice she beat davenport dementieva safine and sharapova(and almost all power players)!she was too good for everyone..you just couldnt face the fact that hingis is the most gifted player of all!!
some of the comments here are too arrogant and nonsense!if your club players really could massacred hingis then where are they now?they couldnt evenb penetrate the elite level!and you based your judgments on what youve seen in tv or on in the pc..why not watch it presonally and youll see how strong they hit the ball...hingis will not beat top players of their respective countries if shes not good enough for them..she has all the weapon..she just use it cleverly and that makes here so unique!
My gosh tennis has moved so fast, really thanks to the williams sisters if they didnt come along we would be getting slow finals like this still.
But Hingis is my 3rd fav behind the williams, its unfortuante Hingis never caped a french, but if her or majoli played like this still or any player, they wouldnt even get past the junior girls 1st round
Hingis with her puffball serve averaging 80 mph -- there are girls in my club who could bludgeon her to death.
Hingis can not be considered a great player. She got to Number One during the interregnum -- the weak period when Graf was injured. When Williamses came along, Hingis was just no match.
I liked how Maria Sharapova massacred Hingis at Indian Wells 2006 with a succession of clean winners. The crowd just loved it.
Steffi Graf is the greatest woman tennis player of all time!
Thanks for saying that. I think Hingis 5 grand slams are a case where the record books don't really tell the story. If the Williams and Davenport (who beat Hingis in 2 grand slam finals, US and Australia) had been around when Hingis was at her "peak" she would not have won more than one or two majors, if that.
Plus, she is a whiny, spoiled brat. She had great match smarts and variety, but I'm glad she was booted out in disgrace.
@acadavos I like how Martina massacred Sharapova with her court smarts and taking the ball early at the Toray Pan Pacific Open that same year. Oh and to compare the Williams Sisters with Hingis is a pure joke. Hingis has innate talent the Williams sisters will never possess. Take away their brute power, Hingis would win. Even Steffi Graf, your proclaimed' greatest woman' tennis player would have struggled against the power of the Williams sisters. Don't disrespect Hingis and her game style
@justindickens81 You sound so stupid..."take away their brute power". Anyone who plays tennis knows that bashing the ball doesn't win matches. If that was the case, you could put anyone who was strong on the court and automatically give them the win. Serena has so much variety and angles in her shots that it's sick. It annoys me to no end that ppl assume bc you hit the ball like a 2 year old child that you have "finesse" and superior variety on court. It just shows how lame your game is!
@acadavos Why aren't the girls at your club playing professionally then? I'm sure they would at least be top 10 if they played anything like Hingis ;)
She could've been the fourth. First was Maureen "Little Mo'" Connolly in 1953, next was Margaret Court in 1970, and the last (man or woman) was Steffi Graf in 1988 where she achieved the Golden Slam (all 4 Grand Slams plus the Olympic Gold medal).
Majoli and Schiavone were good players who for two weeks beat the best

I would rather watch this style of play than the ball bashers of today. It's called variety and finesse.

Loved Majoli; I was SO happy she won this; though it's hard to believe Martina NEVER won an RG title.

She was the youngest girl to win the juniors title though! It is amazing that she didnt win the ladies title though.

Yep. Totally agree. Power players like the Williams sisters and Capriati sent Hingis into retirement.

a string of senseless comments...
there are guys in my club who have booming serves too, but being able to do that in front of an audience of 20 000 and consistently is another story.
Wanna talk about "interregnum", then how about may93 to end of 95. See my point?
Sharapove beat hingis at indian wells, but hingis had beaten her just before at tokyo, 6-3 6-1...
Graf is not THE greatest but ONE OF the greatest...

yeah Hingis & Snachez-Vicario lost to G.Fernandez & Zvereve 6/3,6/7(3),8/10. What a pitty because Martina for sure was very tired in singles final!!!
