  • completely forgot about this show! Oh how i loved watching it. I'd watch it before bed (i was only young when it was broadcast)

  • I'd like a cd with the theme tunes to all these great shows...

  • Love this music. God I would watch this just to hear the theme. I was an interesting lad...

  • Haunting music.

  • ....1996......before the BBC started their cretinous habit of talking over the closing credits......anyway a beautiful theme....from a time .when the BBC really cared about TV themes..........

  • This series needs another season!

  • Could make a good soap opera TV theme too. ;)

  • This tune is haunting, hopeful, melancholy and beautiful all at once. I'd like to have it as my life background music.

  • For some reason I find this tune warm but very depressing at the same time. Am I the only one?

  • I know what you mean. I think the cornet (with it's pleading intonation) couple with the images of empty streets, broken windows gives you the feeling. In a way, I think it's intentional. The show is a mystery.

  • I think putting Patricia Routledge on that role was genius...she was outstanding in "keeping up apperances, but seeing her in a totally different role as a more mysterius and serius and both comical role like this...was brilliant...she is one of the greatest british acresses i think.. ;D thank you Patricia;D

  • Ditto Fingerhut28

  • I love this music. I have a huge afinity for all things British!

  • LOL. That actually made me laugh so hard!

Why on earth would you have sex to /this/?

You just made my days. Thank you.

  • Is this tune called ferry across the mercy? It sounds similar.

  • No. This music was composed by Nigel Hess for the TV series. You are thinking of "Ferry Cross the Mersey" which was a major hit for Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1964>

  • Such a beautiful theme tune... how the trumpet and the small band take the harmonies is just ingenius.

  • Trumpet??? No. It's a cornet! Played by one of the most prestigious cornet players - Philip McCann

  • I've played this as a solo back in my cornet playing days when I was in secondary school!

  • this is a class programme

  • one of the best theme tunes ever

  • A touch of nostagia, culminating in the classy BBC Logo at the end. They won't bring it back because the BBC is ageist. Shame really.

  • Fantastic show!! She reminds me of my nan, who coincidentslly is an ex-busy!

  • classic! great theme

  • this is one of my favorites themes. it reminds me of "For No One" by the Beatles

  • What a wonderful cornet by Phillip McCann!

  • i like Hetty Wainthropp Investigates i think it is good drama serirs

  • Perhaps it's just me, but I really think the brass sound gives it a lovely Northern quality.

There are some really good tv series let down by awful theme tunes - thankfully this series wasn't one of them.

'Tis a shame the BBC never shows repeats of it, I used to like it.

  • Its on most afternoons over New Year and on Sky often too!

  • Does this tune remind anyone else of the theme tune from the old BBC series of Miss Marple?

  • if your reffering to the Joan Hickson version, the i'll agree with you

  • this was one of the best tv series in my childhood (when all i could thik of was being a private detective) I wish they would put this back on maintstreem television

  • I miss this hsow so much. It's a shame it's not on television anymore. I've been thinking of getting the DVDs. This theme song brings tears to my eyes, it's such an amazing piece...

  • this is won of my old classic film and a nice theme to go with it you can still see this on uktv gold

  • Hmm must try to find trumpet score for this again, used to love playing it

  • They need to bring this show back, more people need to knwo about this sort of theme song and how not all good music involves rap ^_^

  • must agree

  • Love it!

  • I've always like PBS Mystery and this is my favorite serial by far Patricia is wonderful actress as Hetty

or as Hyacinth and the theme is lovely.

  • Patricia is a good reason to love the UK.

  • That she is :D

  • Oh, I miss this show on PBS. One of the most beautiful theme songs for tv ever made.

  • It is really a great show. Thank goodness for the DVDs :) And you're right, a beautiful theme song. I've always thought so.

  • Nigel Hess, who wrote the theme, also composed the theme for Wycliffe which I also liked.

  • is their anyway to download these songs?? i love this show!! ahh reminds me of the summer in park slope when its raining...picnics, walks throught the park and local cafes love this show with all my heart...excellent program!!

  • @dbirdwell Nigel Hess made this tune and it won an award as well. NIgel Hess has made a lot of TV Theme tunes and he did Dangerfield's as well.
