....1996......before the BBC started their cretinous habit of talking over the closing credits......anyway a beautiful theme....from a time .when the BBC really cared about TV themes..........
I know what you mean. I think the cornet (with it's pleading intonation) couple with the images of empty streets, broken windows gives you the feeling. In a way, I think it's intentional. The show is a mystery.
I think putting Patricia Routledge on that role was genius...she was outstanding in "keeping up apperances, but seeing her in a totally different role as a more mysterius and serius and both comical role like this...was brilliant...she is one of the greatest british acresses i think.. ;D thank you Patricia;D
I'm guessing he means he will wank off over it. But his mommy reads his comments, so he wants to come across as some big shot that can actually get a girlfriend when in reality he's nowhere near XD
No. This music was composed by Nigel Hess for the TV series. You are thinking of "Ferry Cross the Mersey" which was a major hit for Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1964>

This tune is haunting, hopeful, melancholy and beautiful all at once. I'd like to have it as my life background music.

For some reason I find this tune warm but very depressing at the same time. Am I the only one?

Such a beautiful theme tune... how the trumpet and the small band take the harmonies is just ingenius.

Trumpet??? No. It's a cornet! Played by one of the most prestigious cornet players - Philip McCann

I've played this as a solo back in my cornet playing days when I was in secondary school!

A touch of nostagia, culminating in the classy BBC Logo at the end. They won't bring it back because the BBC is ageist. Shame really.

Perhaps it's just me, but I really think the brass sound gives it a lovely Northern quality.
There are some really good tv series let down by awful theme tunes - thankfully this series wasn't one of them.
'Tis a shame the BBC never shows repeats of it, I used to like it.

@dbirdwell Nigel Hess made this tune and it won an award as well. NIgel Hess has made a lot of TV Theme tunes and he did Dangerfield's as well.
