The song title, "For the Love of God," of course is a double entendre. I hope, most of the other commentors, that Steve is really exalting the love of God...but then again...
Simply the most cohesive piece of music Steve has ever put out. No flights into the bizarre, no overt oddity and effect laden noise, just a thoroughly conceived piece of music that can be listened to many times through without becoming droal or tiresome. Absolutely the benchmark for Steve Vai Material.
I had the priveledge of playing drums with him and can only say he is a very nice guy. not stuck up or ego maniac. It was during the sex & religion tour. the peak of my drumming carreer. Thanks for showing this. he is a treasure...

fluff at 0:47, and for the love of god, shut up. LOL OK I'm not a Vai fan... just my opinion, got to 2:14 and gave up. Just taking a break from recording and looking for inspiration, none here. unless you'r looking for ancient Celtic costumes. Come on people ya gotta laugh, there's a ton of ego here.
@DonnerChu Hmm I dont know what age you are but this shouldnt of got voted up. Basically when people say 'This' Generation they dont mean artists that STARTED back in early 80's/ 70's. Most people think our generations music is just the music that has started to emerge in the popular sector for about 10 years or so. For example artic monkeys, lady gaga. New indie/Pop and more new shit metal bands! Yes there is stuff hidden, but vai is an accomplished virtuoso still going.
@ShreddinThrash Not forgetting the stones and who influnced them. Goes back to way before I was born, and Im old. 51. It all started when humans started clapping sticks together. It is inherrent. Music is life. We all dig it but in so many different ways. But ofcourse my way is the best way! Hahahaha
I remember Fellowship of the Ring when watching this video. The fellowship go to Mordor, bring the ring. Vai goes to loneliness -- with God, guitar, and reflections!
This clip makes me realize this song is not just an incredible guitar performance. This is also a serious reflexion on the musics, painting but also the massacres made "for the love of God". Vai composes on a theme, and is not a stupid artist. This song is a really Essay on a subject.
Vai has got so much Cosmic Creative Energy flowing its amazing to hear. Truly a gift from another Dimension. Humans are so blinded by the illusion of duality, but in reality we are all connected! All is one & One is all.
This is right how I imagined this video, some indian playing on a mountain and talking that way straight to a God or Gods. This is a man to man conversation what Stevie here started. Amazing beautiful melody and so everything here is in musically expressed so breathtaking that I wouldn´t even touch my guitar after this masterpiece. Everything is said and done already. Is Steve an indian?
Mirko 24, me too from Finland so this is my lousy english. They´ve gotta deal with it, hehehe.
You're right it does say "walking the fine line between pagan and christian" on the recorded version, although, not on this video edit. I say edit because at the 3:26 mark here some of the original work is edited out (approx. 20sec worth I think). Go watch this and another video of the cd version (at around 4:10 mark) watch?v=okLDkcexiVgto
This is a great piece of music. I play this to my 2 year old daughter. I'm so nowhere near (ever!) the same class as Mr Vai but my daughter gives me a smile that makes me feel as if I am. Which makes it all worth while :-)
For all you people arguing about who's best...FUCK OFF. Enjoy the music, all different guitarist, all skilled, all are proof that this type of music is better than the pop and stuff thats around today.
And just incase you want to know - my opinion is, i don't care...but Hendrix is God of guitar to me.
@BUNCHAFUZZ How about this. EVH couldn't ever write a composition like this. All he does is shred wank his solos. Sure his tapping was good, but he could never compose or write a song like this. Satriani, Govan, Petrucci, Gilbert are better than him too. Respect to Van Halen for writing the riffs, signature Van Halen sound and progressing the world of guitar gods, but if you want to compare talents it isn't even a contest. That is of course, my opinion.
he showed up at Joe Satriani's door with a guitar in one hand and a pack of strings in the other for some lessons ,he didn't know how to put the strings on .
I think every on on youtube needs to shut up and stop over glorifying steve and paul gilbert or any other mysticaly talented person.. im sure their all flattered but you all sound like your unworthy of everything, if your a person who plays an instrument search your soul for what you really want to do with music, and if you don play an instument then you have no business commenting. ALL HAIL people with individuality and Commen sense.
@ScwantoeSTEVEVAI agreed, except where you say people who dont play an instrument have no business commenting. all can comment imo, there are people who are just listeners who love music. teqniques can be learned but the feel of a piece of music is very personal, and even though some music doesnt do it for you/me, thats not a disaster just sometimes it hits you right on the spot and sometimes it doesnt. no biggy. btw, even if you dont have "talent", so what, if you enjoy playing, just play. :)
i think the purpose of this song is people think and change our mind, stop to be angry, save the nature, stop wars, be human, he prays for the love of god i can see it in his eyes
