@bryncomeaux As long as there is a company providing it, the idea is that you wouldn't be dependent on an outside source for your heating and cooling.
Especially if you are in a area prone to downed power lines.
Also consider the threat of the various environmental agencies adding massive cost overheads to certain types of power which are cheap at the moment (coal, oil etc)
With geothermal, Solar and a good septic and well system you can be independent of others.

The cheapest would be an open loop system using a well to cool the home. With the right pump and water supply, it would work.
