Don't let designers make real, functional, stuff... You know, those spaceships look cool, but they will never be good in the real world... They are hilarious for those who understand...
Very helpful video, gonna sit down and give this technique a whirl. Just a quick question about the brightest highlights done towards the end of each of the drawings. I noticed that you're using a good sized brush, but the white tends to stay with the existing highlight established and isn't leaking into any of the other values. I didn't notice you do any lassoing to do them, but there wasn't any need to touch up afterwards. Are the highlights done with the chalk brush, or the airbrush? Thanks.
after you put them in groups how did you mange to make a layer on top that does not bleed outside of the silhouette without making it a clipping mask?
question about the brush you use for the siloutes, you always say its the default chalk brush but that doesnt have a texture and no variation in size like shown in the video.
Thank you for supporting FZD School Youtube Channel. As we are not allowed to post links here, you can google Feng's name and the result should have it.
@sinnerrayer Feng told us many times that foundation stuff is very hard to cover in 20 minutes tutorial, and he still has a school to run. if he'd be sharing that with us, his students, who pay him for teaching them that exact thing, would be pretty pissed. be thankful for what he shares with us.
don't get me wrong, i would absolutely love to see a draw through drawing, or foundation paintings, but those are things that Feng can't share with us on youtube. we just have to respect that.
@Ubermisho it's a chalk brush. Feng said that many many times. on the other hand, knowing what brush he uses will not make you a better designer. create your own brushes, it is the best way to know exactly how everything works, obviously, because you made it work that way.
Hi im just begining to paint spaceships. Can you tell me where to start from in, like what type of studies should I do on, to paint spaceships. Because when I try to design the details I just get stuck.
Feng zhu every time I watch a tutorial or design cinema from provides an unlimited depth of wisdom and understanding - as an artist I can't express in words how much your inspiration is valued.
well done at the moment i'm doing alittle more anime but i want to get back to this stuff real soon. great ships. feng says anime pretty much all been done before but he likes there designs and thnks they have great ideas!
Hello, i have a question. how does Feng make the chalk brush in the beginning to be so "crispy" is it default brush or did feng add some texture?? i have tried to make such a brush but cant get it right... help me someone thank you.
One more thing, Feng. I just realized that I have a doubt about the game production pipeline. What exactly is a concept artist responsible for on the game production pipeline? The same doubts about concept designer and a production designer. What are they responsible for? Thank you.
Hi Feng! I'm Flavio Remontti, from TheConceptArtBlog, Brazil. Nice to talk to you again. So, first I'll like to tank you. I was recently hired by a start up game studio and all your videos helped me a lot! In my company many other artists watch and follow your videos. Thank you very much by your willing to share all your knowledge and experience.
great tutorial , you made it look easy but it actually takes a very good understanding for lights and shadows ( values ) to design in this style , it would be really cool if you had a basics tutorial on this matter , cheers : )
fundamentals such as lighting, composition, perpective, anatomy, etc. are skipped in Design Cinema; since that is the core business of our full-time school :) Can't give everything away on youtube. Hope you guys understand. Besides, videos can't do fundamentals justice. Most need at least 6+ months of daily training to even understand it - similar to studying physics - something that's hard to learn on your own (nobody around to tell you about mistakes or answer questions).
@Fengdesigns yea i guess you're right , there are sources on the internet for fundamentals too but i am just too lazy to read sometimes :P and they are not so focused and accurate , btw very nice videos and believe me if i could join your school i would , keep up the great work !
@Fengdesign Thank you so much for doing these videos!Yes,we understand you are already going out of your way a lot as it is by taking the time to do these demos.I for one can't thank you enough for these!I'm 29,and after going from one office job to the next over the past 11 years,i have finally decided to go back to school and go for my passion instead.So sad FZD feels SOOO far away right now,I live in Florida,USA. These videos keep me pumped and your instruction is greatly inspiring,THANK YOU
everything you said in this vid is so true ^^ even though I'm not out in the field yet, I'm getting this at school :) the stuff I see sometimes just blows my mind :D but at the same time there are still a lot of people who think they're good but totally aren't.
I tried working with other brushes, but like you said, you don't know that well how to use them.. :) even the painting in gray, it works great ^^
Thanks for another outstanding design cinema. A key point you often make is one of having the audience relate to familiar aspects of the design. In particular with spacecraft design there are some good examples of unconventional designs being successful, for example the Borg cube where there are no recognisable sections. Would you only produce this type of design where it was a client request to support a key concept of their IP?
yes, you have to get the right clients willing to "chance" a design. Normall, the bigger the budget, the less "crazier" the designs; because big budget = need more people to buy it = designs need to be more universal
Ohh i forgot - i would definitely like to see just bit of finishing in end resolution for a big one. And i do not mean like showing every trick and detail that off course is yours. But just seeing a part of finishing especially details like edges.
Hey Feng - and thanks a lot for bringing me back to the drawing plate. Watched a lot of you vids - very inspiring indeed. If or when you do the next one (Charecter(s) would be nice to see some HiTech stuff (perhaps marinestyle) and maybe a bit different forms like bulkier (round) or more straight stuff. And please explain again when to choose transpanrent brushes (values) vs solid brushes (values).
Anyways thanks again and keep em´ coming when you have the time ;D.
instead of just canvas size, i would also be curious as to what brush size you use when blocking in your shapes and stuff. obviously you change the size a lot. so just aprox examples at key stages would be awesome!
Btw, for life-drawing, best is to draw from live nudes. Some of the books you guys mentioned are good, but the human body is best studied in person (because the forms are so complex). Back in school, we even drew from cadavers to study the muscles under the skin.
A lot of art schools have life drawing sessions, so see if you can sign up.
@Fengdesigns Loved these as well as the other three. Id like to ask a question. As I understand it, the style guides in the entertainment are something akin to coding standards in the IT production. So, [a] - Id like to know I get it correctly - its a set of guidelines to make sure everyone on the team produces the work that fits the whole picture both technically and vision-wise. And [b] - are things such as brushes (technical aspect) are a part of these.
Yes, the pipeline is important. But what brush, settings, etc. are not important. Nobody cares about the process, only the result. The easiest thing to follow is : high quality & high quantity done in the shortest amount of time possible. Other smaller stuff are how to sign your name, handwriting, how to make proper notes, doing orthos, etc. The ultimately key is the design. Can your design(s) sell on the market? The actual drawing/painting is worthless, but the content holds the value
@Fengdesigns Thank you for your response. I hope you dont mind me asking another question. In this episode you mention the term "design language", could you please explain it a bit?
@drkstr19 Best way to solve "designer's block" for me is to just sketch. You have to get past the bad designs to find the good ones. We can't really walk away from it and get "inspiration" since most of the work in production are under deadline.
@Koutetsugeeg Actually I've done some giant robots for Japan (with a updated look). They specifically wanted an "non-Japanese" look. But that project is still under development. Btw, doesn't Transformers count? :)
I hope one day you will works on the subject "Famous Japanese robots with a new design!".
I really want to see you draw huge, powerful sci-fi robots...like Gundam, Mazinger, Daitarn, Getter, etc.....They need a new twist to make them more "2011 style"!
Your student should be happy for this subjects...don't forget about the Trasnformers movies, the Voltron movie, Gaiking movie...there will be lots of opportunities for new jobs in this sector for your student in the near future
As I watch your videos, there is never a single step along the way which seems very difficult or surprising. But when viewed as a whole, the end result often seems nearly overwhelming even though I just watched and understood the entire process of getting there.
beautiful work feng, love these designs...would these paintings be enough to hand off to a 3d artist or would you be asked to detail these up more before they are turned into a model?
@Damascus57 I've got a book by this one guy named Gary Tonge who did use a mouse for the longest time, and did awesome professional work with it, but yeah, he eventually broke down and got a tablet. But still...some people are just beasts with a mouse. It's nice to see what's possible. ...But yeah, get a tablet, 'cause you'll never look back!
One doubt, how do you do when you have to turn these concepts on production design for 3D models? Can you keep all the details from Concept on the final 3D model?
Thanks for making these instructional videos. I've been trying for years to put my artwork to use for me. Recently I've been intrigued by digital artwork and I think that concept art is for me. I sort of jumped into it and bought a Cintiq 21UX right away, without even knowing how to use Photoshop, I still struggle a bit, but with videos like this it should come faster. Is there a specific Photoshop that you think works better than another?

Hi, can anybody recommend any books on how to learn perspective, shading techniques, or how to understand form? I am a self taught guy and I want to understand the fundamentals of art.
There is a really good and cheap Perspective book its called "Perspective drawing Handbook by Joseph D'Amelio" if you have the patience to read and do the exercises in this book you will get the basic knowledge your looking for. Also as a side note you should train your eye to look at the world with perspective in mind. Use your imagination to draw lines to their vanishing point on the horizon in the world around you as you go through your day.
@999yuiop Loomis-figure drawing for all it's worth and successful drawing. you can find the pdf versions online as they are no longer in print. I would also check out his other books while you're at it
@Malicious2094 Loomis is not as good as Hampton's Figure Drawing for process + Bammes for a more detailed anatomy analysis. Ive tried most of them including Hogarth etc.
@CatzLV I find Loomis to be simple to understand and a good starting point. I think everyone has their own preference for what works best though and should try to find several different methods of approach. I haven't tried as much of Hampton so I think I'll check that out, thanks
@999yuiop I am self-taught too (still very much learning) but I've been getting questions about what resources I've learned from. I'm going to be doing a couple tutorials in a week or so about the art books in my library, online tutorials (like FZDSCHOOL!), and where/how to find reference material to start building your own library.
Very true about the brushes, I've downloaded over 200MB of brushes and I really didn't like any that I tried, even the ones from great artists, I came to the same conclusion as Feng, I had no idea what the brushes were supposed to do or accomplish, in end I took my scanner, my camera and made all my brushes from scratch, very happy with the results, still use the chalk brush, everyone does, it's the best for general color blocking.
Hi Feng, this tutorial was really fantastic, great way to get great results and fast.I would really like to see a tutorial of a city landscape, but not like the ones of the alien attacks, but something that explains a little on how you desing buldings , thank you very much for your time, im tring to get in this industry, im not as young as you when you started but hopefully i can accomplish something one day. you are a great inspiration, keep it up
I beg to differ, I've seen some pretty exceptional work done entirely w/ the mouse. Example, one of the highest rated pieces on gfxartist(dot)com was done w/ a mouse only. But for the most part, you're right.
One question I guess - I have a tablet and use it. But my problem with it is it really bogs down my workflow. Having to switch back and forth between the mouse and tablet pen to switch color, layers, or looking for references outside of PS. How do you keep going so fast? Button presets, hotkeys? Do you use quite a bit of either of those?
And then sometimes switching back and forth between the mouse and tablet, for some reason, shuts down PS entirely, which has caused a few headaches...
@Illumirage Hmm...I'm not sure why it's faster, but whatever works for you. Do yourself a favor though - learn the hotkeys. They can really streamline your work flow and lessen the back and forth you have to do by using the menu or toolbars.
My background lies in heavy traditional media. I can do nearly photorealistic drawings.
Making the jump from looking at what I'm drawing, to drawing on the tablet and looking at the screen hasn't come quite as easy as I had hoped. Things like rotating the canvas, etc. Thus, a lot of things are just faster with the mouse.
I know the obvious route to take is just to scan my drawings in, but I want to find a way to make the tablet work for me...
I'm not sure what type of tablet you are using, but you should not have to switch between mouse and pen at all. Maybe your working on a PC and have your tablet set to only be used by PS (I use a WACOM tablet on a mac and the stylus works the exactly the same as a mouse I only use the mouse for 3D software)
Feng, I love all the words of wisdom you're kind enough to give to us. But I must say, what I enjoy most about these is just watching you work, and how it all comes to fruition. Thank you!
I have a question: a lot of time we hear about designs that appeal to the west as opposed to designs that appeal to the asian market.
it seems for some reason that you cannot quite please both?
I couldn't find many resources about it. it would be great if you could talk a little bit about this differences, how we can design to appeal more to one or the other..maybe both?
Great! I find so hard to start my concepts from a black silhouette (just black value) but I'll practice this and see if I can make it work. I'll take a look again a your character silhouettes videos.
Don't let designers make real, functional, stuff... You know, those spaceships look cool, but they will never be good in the real world... They are hilarious for those who understand...

999yuiop 10 months ago
@999yuiop
There is a really good and cheap Perspective book its called "Perspective drawing Handbook by Joseph D'Amelio" if you have the patience to read and do the exercises in this book you will get the basic knowledge your looking for. Also as a side note you should train your eye to look at the world with perspective in mind. Use your imagination to draw lines to their vanishing point on the horizon in the world around you as you go through your day.
artmercenary 10 months ago
@artmercenary I actually already have that book, but I'm kind of looking for how to draw characters in perspective. But Thanks anyways man.

CatzLV 10 months ago

How do you create a colour pallet :( ?
b41ny1 10 months ago
@Damascus57

Illumirage 10 months ago
@Illumirage Why do you have to switch to a mouse to choose colors / switch layers etc.? You can do all those things with the pen, too.
skunknuts1 10 months ago
@skunknuts1
I know. But it's faster, for me at least.
Illumirage 10 months ago
@Illumirage Hmm...I'm not sure why it's faster, but whatever works for you. Do yourself a favor though - learn the hotkeys. They can really streamline your work flow and lessen the back and forth you have to do by using the menu or toolbars.

@skunknuts1
I know some, but thx for the tip though.
Illumirage 10 months ago
@Illumirage

@artmercenary
I am on a PC, and yes, have a Wacom.

@Illumirage try only using your tablet for everything

Feng, I love all the words of wisdom you're kind enough to give to us. But I must say, what I enjoy most about these is just watching you work, and how it all comes to fruition. Thank you!

this videos are awesome than you Feng!
I have a question: a lot of time we hear about designs that appeal to the west as opposed to designs that appeal to the asian market.
it seems for some reason that you cannot quite please both?
I couldn't find many resources about it. it would be great if you could talk a little bit about this differences, how we can design to appeal more to one or the other..maybe both?
thank you and keep doing amazing stuff!!

Great! I find so hard to start my concepts from a black silhouette (just black value) but I'll practice this and see if I can make it work. I'll take a look again a your character silhouettes videos.
Cheers Feng

do you think this method or the approach used in the gnomon fish video is better for generating designs?
