Hahahahahaha,"Dirty Pictures" indeed, lol.I take it that was 'tongue in cheek'? There's absolutely NOTHING dirty about the nude form,as I'm sure you'd agree. Mableforthe was a genius,he brought us photographic images which forced us to discuss, openly, the nude in ways which probably hadn't been discussed before in such depth.Erotic, sensual, stark, revealing but definitely 'in your face'.He contributed much to the world of Art,& it most definitely IS Art.
I don't see the appeal in this type of "art" as I am more into impressionist and neo-classical schools, with the odd bit of postmodern or surrealist thrown in, but I have to admit...to me personally, I just don't see this as art. To each his own though, not saying it isn't art, just that I don't see it as such myself.
Through Mapplethrope i learnt to miss someone i never knew. If i watch his pictures i am so... speechless. Mapplethorpe destilated the beauty out of things- a face, a penis, a nose, an armpit, flowers- What he gives us with his work is the spirit of beauty. And only perverted people can see something perverted in his pictures.
Despite all the hoopla Mapplethorpe's stuff was pretty mundane. But he knew how to generate publicity for himself and that became bigger than his art.
It is so good to see that Mapplethorpe is just as controversial as he always was. That's part of his art--to rattle the cages of hysterics everywhere.
Whoever that British guy is speaking beginning at 1:07 is telling it like it is! Good on him for calling mankind on his hypocrisy! My sentiments exactly!
What seperates a great artist from just a sick sexually demented pervert...government funding. He was nothing more than your average sicko jerking off in a corner to smut films of gay guys.
Before you go judging people you don't know. Why don't you look up why the man made the fucking pictures. He didn't do it for the funding he did it as an expression of his life. It was a rebellion against the oppresion he was put through as a child. Being forced to hide his sexuallity to avoid getting beaten. Why don't you do some research before you go judging things you dont know. You are entitled to your opinion. But don't go flaming someone's video or art because it makes your stomach turn.
It takes a lot to be a proffesional / saleable photographer and self employed .
Hard to be an all sell, and that is even reach your product world wide. Not to forget as an artistic photographer he has an influence on other artististic photographer students in future. He was great.

And you know what, i think jesus would of loved him and his work. wait... arnt christians soposed to love everyone for who they are and not judge anyone. it's only god can judge people when they die. Your the one who is not portraying jesus christ in a good way. who are you to judge?

exactly [Andrés Serrano, 'Piss Christ', 1987] and GOOD FOR HIM! Although the judgment of Mapplethorp ("obscenity" hahaha) in Cincinnati was perhaps more interesting than the defense of Serrano by Lucy Lippard in 1990 ... the case of Mapplethorp was more authentic! WHAT A GREAT ARTIST HE WAS!
If you're talking about the voice over after Mappletheorpe's, the content of what he is saying would indicate it is Dr Dennis Barrie, the Art Museum Curator, who was the real subject of this film, Dirty Pictures.
So if Dr DB has an English accent, a deviated septum, and possibly hayfever, I'd say he is your man!

Heh.
I'm actually talking about the man in the photography at 01:20. He seems so familiar, and yet I cannot put my finger on who he is...
8caulfield 3 years ago
Ahh , you have me thinking now, O might refer to some Mapplethorpe texts. Will reply if I find a match.
chitchant 3 years ago
That's Fran Lebowitz - New York writer. And female.

Who wants to be reminded to the aborations of life?
If Americans wish to create a heaven on earth
the American people shall have it.
Robert Maplethorpe died of AIDS.
The end result of his own homosexual materialism and promiscuity.
The American people did not know that our tax dollars were used to finance his sick "art" to be placed in some of America's finest museums.
Still the wickedness of occult driven societies within the United states seek to fill the American mind with evil.
