Eh not rly. I just got an HD4650 from HIS today for 50. That thing blows the 8500 GT away. Although if you cant get any other option it's alright if that's all you have.
the 8500 GT has a few extras like DX10 and OpenGL 2.1. but a old 6800 GT can stll hang with this card , not saying much the 6800 Gt is old and the 8500 GT is a sort of newer but a low end card. why not just save up your money and buy a Geforce 8800 of your choice (one that you can afford) cause any flavor of a single 8800 will smoke a 6600GT, or a 6800 GT, or a 8500 GT in SLI mode.
depending if you have PCI-E (cause there isnt a 8800 in AGP) thwey range from $75 - $500 depending on model.
overclocking is not a good thing to do with your graphics card if u want to keep it more than 3-5 years... without overclocking it can "live" 10 years...
8600GT will be a light increase, about the same as the 7600GT. Go with the 8800GT, it's about $145 now and smokes the 8600GT and is a bit faster than the 9600GT. Trust me, the 8600, 6600, 7600 all dont stand a chance against the 8800Gt.
yups go with the 8800gt cause thats what im going to do when i get the cash for a new rig... hopefully i get enough cash to sli them bad boys together!
the reasoin 9600gt and some of the top range 8800 series are so expensive is they are pciexpress slot ver 2 a new deisgned slot give a huge boost in porfomance and price but well wort buying as it will last till the future gaiming and more
@PRODVDi Yeah you can't :P, The GTX 590 is NVIDIA's most powerful SINGLE PCB card and 6990 is ATI's, Compare these dual GPU monster's and the 6600gt the performance per watt difference is pretty big xD. Back in those day's I didn't see tech advancing this much 0-0. it's only been 4 years!.
dont bother with 9800series there a rip off 8 series is cheaper and does just as good even better depending on what card you buy. only good card from series 9 is 9600GT it performes worse than an 8800GT and costs the same as the 8800GT you can beat that can you.. hahahahaha.
is your budget under 100$? cuz the 8500GT is not a big jump at all. you'll probably only see 0-10% fps increase in performance in most games, but the 8600GT is a good choice, you'll probably see 50-90% increase in performance in most games.

Just to you naysayers who say 2x 8500GT you're idiots. the 8500GT is proven to only go 7x speed(in the nvidia sense) while 1x 8600GT goes 17x, that's double the 2x 8500GT's while on the other hand.... a 8800gt goes 33x
