I loved T from day one .It must be magic was my favorite album was the soundtrack for my summer vacation in 1981.I admired her because she along with Patrice rushen were of the first women to produce their own albums.
I'd posit that Whit has a prettier voice than ReRe in either of their primes. ReRe's emotional depth and range and flexibility are undeniably greater; both stylistically and in terms of raw force in her chest voice. That said, they're such different singers and artists that they defy comparison, though. It's sort of like comparing Aguilera and Pink. Each, gifted, but VERY different. So why not enjoy mango and melon? Juuuuust sayin'....
Lovely. I've heard aretha get down on this track so many different ways it's amazing. Even Patti's version is good. Jennifer Hudson gets lost in the middle and it loses it's pop.
Christina voice is good, she tries so hard to be soulful and heart filled in her performances lack the passion, emotions feeling is needed in to pull off a song like this .

This could be considered her best live concert vocal ever, just amazing the talent this woman has. I have been lucky enough to have seen her sing live since the late seventies when she was performing with her mom Cissy Houston in NYC nightclubs and this was way before Whitney even had a recording contract. I'd met her several times backstage then and she was a charming, shy young lady.

Aretha vs. Whitney cannot be resolved. Their voices were suited for different music. Aretha could sing this song in a juke joint in the back woods. Whitney is more suited to the grand stage. Both would blow them away. I think if you're trying to determine who was more of a musical pioneer, that would have to be Aretha. Her music was innovative for its time, is still some of the most popular music in human history, and she played a large part in its development.

Aretha Franklin had much better pitch than Whitney. If you really want to hear this, you need to go back to her early Columbia Records days and hear Aretha sing standards. This is an excellent performance by Whitney--but it still isn't at the level of Aretha's, whose voice was full in all ranges. That aside, I think Whitney could have gone on to even surpass her own accomplishments if she had pulled her life together. And that's a shame because talent is such a rare gift.

She should have rested her voice for a couple of years after 1994 that was her intention too until Babyface begged her to sing on Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. That's the premise of The Voice, the new show Xtina is in. Don't look at the singer; just listen to them. Xtina is amazing, but I do think she can over-sing. I think Xtina is close to Whitney's level of super Diva during her prime, and is the only current singer at that level. but Whitney in her prime- incredible.

When I lived in NYC in the 70's I used to go see Cissy Houston in her night club act & Whitney would appear with her mom onstage and also would get 1 solo song per show, most of the time it was THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL. The last time I had a chat with Whitney it was exactly 1 week before her first solo LP came out and I wished her luck, look what has happened !!

This is an excellent performance by Whitney--but it still isn't at the level of Aretha's, whose voice was full in all ranges. That aside, I think Whitney could have gone on to even surpass her own accomplishments if she had pulled her life together. And that's a shame because talent is such a rare gift.

I am believe that Whitney Houston in her prime had a better voice than Aretha Franklin her godmother. If you disagree thats fine. I grew up in the 80s I was even thought of when Aretha was doing her thing for real. I have a lot of respect for her but I don't think she has better voice period. MY OPINION!!! SWEETHEART :)

@wolfee92 Whitney is a coloratura mezzo soprano here by tone, but she is a true coloratura naturally. She had nodules and should been resting her voice, instead of touring in 95-98. She should have rested her voice for a couple of years after 1994 that was her intention too until Babyface begged her to sing on Waiting to Exhale soundtrack. Whitney said herself she just wanted to act not sing, behind the scenes to rest her voice from nodules extensive touring in 80's 90's

Whitney is a true true soprano boo and coloratura from 1986-1994. 1997 was a rough vocal period after the Asia tour, cause she toured when she needed to rest her voice from nodules. But she even here was coloratura mezzo soprano. She still could hit notes in 6 octave, and yes probably seventh here.

i'll admit that christina is the voice of our generation, but whitney will always be THE VOICE, period. Ree's voice is much like whitney's: clear, pure, resonant; both are masters of vocal runs and CLEAN belting, whereas Xtina screams, watch how far she pulls the mic away when she belts. christina over-sings everything, and on her own songs, that's great; it's her thing. but who over-sings and screams 'ain't no way' while paying tribute to the queen at the grammy's? bad form.

That's the premise of The Voice, the new show Xtina is in. Don't look at the singer; just listen to them. Xtina is amazing, but I do think she can over-sing. I think Xtina is close to Whitney's level of super Diva during her prime, and is the only current singer at that level. but Whitney in her prime- incredible.

I don't think she's really thru.. she just has to find herself again. Or maybe that's for the first time. But the instrument never fails.. it just falls out of practice.. staying off the drugs and pouring herself back into her craft , i beleive the voice will come back just as strong.

Whitney at her best. Yes, Aretha had the finest version of this song but Whitney does it justice. When I lived in NYC in the 70's I used to go see Cissy Houston in her night club act & Whitney would appear with her mom onstage and also would get 1 solo song per show, most of the time it was THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL. The last time I had a chat with Whitney it was exactly 1 week before her first solo LP came out and I wished her luck, look what has happened !!
