Hi All Yes what a great man a great personality so sad hes gone didnt know , my gran and grandad listened to him 50 years ago on radio eireann it ws then not RTE 1, a monaghahan man i think correct me if im wrong, Wasnt it great he could speak gaelic being from there . Wasnt it Called Ceolta Tire at first then mo cheol thu ish my gran. & Granda used to laugh at the way the late trasa davidson used to pronounce his name in gaelic eg mac mo thuna. continued in part 2 by me PB Manchester.
Oh I loved listening to Ciaran 'MacMahon' on a Sunday Morning and I used to get up especially early and I have only just learned of his passing in Dec 2009 ( I was in Africa at the time). What a lovely man and I remember listening to his final broadcast and feeling sad for many Sundays afterwards - It was Ciaran first thing then Sunday Miscellany and that was my Sunday mornings for quite some time - I guarded them jealously. It is so lovely to hear his voice again here <3
Has anybody got a bad word to say about Ciarán..... probably did more to popularise Irish music and song than most people I know. Do ndéana Dia trocaire ar a anam. ♥
I remember listening to Mo Cheol Thu when I was a kid, growing up in Ireland and hating it. I think now I found it a depresing lead up to having to drapse to Mass. I almost cried when I came across this tonight. I wish I had appreciated the show more and only in spite of all my earlier complaining listening to Ciaran's voice reminds that he had one of the most beautiful voices on Irish radio!
the most authority who educated me every sunday on irish history, musicand poetry and exposed me to my irish ancestry and roots . God bless you for that old chap !
Ever time I hear "The Lark In The Clear Air" and Ciaran's voice I'm immediately transported back to lying in bed every Sunday morning. One Ciaran's show can on RTE radio, my mother would crank up the volume and the music and prose would float through the house. I'd lie there listening to a few pieces of music, finally stirring myself and getting ready to head down to Mass. He did so much to not only save, but bring respectability to Irish music, song and prose. My he be rewarded well.
I thank you for posting this, may the Lord have mercy on him, he was one man I loved to listen every Sunday morning when I lived at home in Ireland. He had one particular tune I loved ( though I loved all the music he played) when I lived in Waterford called the Waterford Waltz. Does anyone have that tune out there. Again thank you.
Great post Mark. I reckon that few of my vintage and older will not have been reminded of our youth when Ciarán ruled the airways on Sunday mornings from 8 to 9.

I found a version of it on an album called Farewell and Remember me by The Boys of the Lough. You can get it on Amazon as a download.
