You don't have to install it... You can only play on Zombie servers if u want real zombie game =D... It will auto download when u connect, but ofc, If you want you can play on normal servers that's not runnin zombie mode.

in my opinion, left 4 dead is a better zombie game (because thats what its based around, obviously)

and cs:s is a better shooter in general, the zombie mod is just kind of a crappy add-on(though it is really really fun :D)
