Social progress started in CEE just 20 years ago. It takes several generations to change old prejudices. In my country, Estonia, 75% of the parliament is liberal of some sort, but passing civil union law that would allow gays to get legally recognized is damn hard. It will pass in a few years, but it had a painful backlash from the older generation.
