I think the reason the ziplock one is loose is because there's air in the ziplock bag. Maybe keeping them in the boxes and vacuuming them would make them more stackable.
Interesting, thanks. I was thinking of doing that. Not that I need to, SoCal is pretty low humidity. I thought the bags would be tough enough for the boxes. I'll think about how to remedy that.
Anyone have a thought about this>>>> Storing ammo on strip loaders then seal....The Ammo might store better and provide the ability to transport with more rigidity...What about sealing a small desiccant pack in with the ammo?
I seal mine using standard food vacuum sealer you get at Walmart. I store it INSIDE their box's with the labels facing outward for easy identification. I don't seal it super tight to create much pressure on the shell casing. Just enough to pull the majority of the atmosphere out and create a viable seal.
You will have to use your own judgement on what is the best pressure to apply, but after a couple attempts Im confidant you will find your sweet spot.
I just bought a Foodsaver vacuum sealer and i'm planning to do some ammo this weekend.I live in a humid area too and i'm worried that if i don't it might not work that well if i don't vacuum seal it.
When you do 223, 308 or any sharp bullet ammo, put it in a plastic bag. Cut vents for the air to go out. Done this way you can vacum seal and not have the sharp bullet point opening your bags when moving them.
I store all my ammo in ammo cans. However, I think it's a great idea to vacume seal some "ready to go" packs. In case I have to seperate from my family for any reason, it would be easy to carry and makes it water proof.
great job, im glad you took it out of the cardboard, the acids in the paper would tarnish and cause corrosion on your brass. what brand of vacuum sealer is that?
Nice job and should keep it waterproof but remember ammo lasts a LONG time.I have fired military 45 acp rounds that were packed by the military in 1944 and had no special storage other than keeping them dry and cool and the entire box fired flawlessly no jams whatsoever.
I just recently tested some of this stored ammo, zero failures to report of about 200 rounds. Next time I will try to place them in a location with an adverse environment to see there are any true benefits to vacuum sealing them.
Oh yes you can, I like to keep the excess to provide some cushion for the other ammo. Just make sure you have at least 1/2 an inch left as the seal can experience unnecessary pressure if you cut it off within a few millimeters.

Yes I do that now but certain boxes can penetrate the bags

Well they actually do that for US 5.56 ammo, the prob is that the clips may pierce the bag

The cartridges in the zip-loc bag taste much better than those that were vacuum sealed. They're just "fresher".

I sealed up some ammo once. It stayed nice and fresh for when I ripped it open the next day to shoot it. And yes.. I do mean "once".

Q. dose it dent the brass casing when it's sealed in there?
:O)

No there isn't enough pressure to do that
MrUrbanSurvivalist 11 months ago
so your sealing up this ammo for emergency purposes in the future?
TruAzn100 1 year ago
@TruAzn100
Well I live in a very humid area. It's a combination of things, yes I will be using this in the future, but my current stock is long term storage.

I'm curious how the bags will hold up to "pointy" ammo.

Anyone have any long term experience with this yet. I am definitely interested. Thanks in advance.

I've done them all. It is way easy then if you want to put them in a pvc pipe and burry them.
Shotgun ammo is fine as well but I found that the plastic shells work better.

I just want to know, what is the exact purpose of this?
spokehedz 2 years ago
@spokehedz It protects the ammo from moisture and dust, which can ruin the powder inside the bullet and cause a misfire.

good idea, water proof and easy to transport in your bug out bag.
