Untill yesterday I had no recollection of the fact that my Father was one of the unfortunate young men who was subjected to the cruelty that went on inside the Whitehouse , Words are not enough to convey how dispicable these beaters were, if any of them are still alive I hope they get their punishment . My Father hid this from me for all of his life ,he died this yr aged 62.
Runaway beatings were given whenever they caught you,Most were for rule infractions & were given on Sat. morning. If the guy with the clipboard came & called your name it really put a crimp in your week.
I was beaten 23 times.3 were for runaways. Torture was the Saturday morn ing waiting in the office for the beatings to begin, Maybe two hours waiting for it,knowing it was coming.
There is healing and salvation in Christ Jesus those sick men were devils intending to beat the love out of these men but no man took the beating that Christ Jesus did and all for the Glory of God and for the salvation of the lost he was crufcifed and rose again and he knew from the moment man sinned he was going to hae to pay this price for the salvation of man but he endured it and the worse part is becoming our sin on the cross and being seperated from the father God!
@quailo31 no your not it was a miracle you survived and you endured somethig that has made you stronger than ever also you have suffered nothing compared to what many have suffered many have been chopped to bits and drown and shot at during the reformatino and did so willingly as they would not surrender their faith .Those real accounts of men of God men of faith would show you that there is a God because they had peace in their souls as they were being tormented. (same church to Catholics)
If there was a God of love and of life, an omnipotent creator, all knowing, all powerful and loves us, then why would he allow monsters like this to walk the earth? Where was he? Those boys suffered beyond comprehension and still suffer. Where was God to answer their prayers? If this was God's "test" of faith for these boys then God is just as guilty, vile, and disgusting as the men who were doing the beating. It's a miracle they lived but God had nothing to do with it.
how dare the "man" say it's going to hurt me more than it hurts you. that is such a load of bollocks! i don't even accept that when it's a loving punishment sometimes...these men were sadists. dispicable! reminds me of Sleepers.
The man that Michael O'McCarthy was describing was R.W. (Robert Wayne) Hatton, he was the director of training on the White side when they were segregated, with E.B. Davis being the director on the Black side.
I'm surprised about McCarthy's description of Hatton hitting him one after the other and timing the blows so as he came up another blow came back down on him. Hatton usually prefered to space some time out between blows so each hit would be it's own punishment (Cont'd)
He also spaced them out because it would avoid weakening his arm so he could swing full blast with each blow.
Mr. McCarthy was beaten if I recall because he ran away from the facility. Something which results in 100 blows. Something which is not always survivable...
They generally used a strap between 25 and 32 inches, a width between 3.5 to 4.5 inches and a thickness of either 1/2 inch with a piece of sheet metal or other weight to increase it's mass and increase the damage caused by it, or 3/4 inches with no sheet-metal insert.
For black kids they generally used straps that had holes in them because it would bust the skin more efficiently and there was this ignorant belief that blacks had tougher skin.
The fact that they were racist bastards played a role as well. Marianna was a KKK stronghold in the past.
If you attempted escape, they used a longer strap, approximately 42" which automatically increases it's damage as the velocity at the tip is going much higher. The strap was only about 3" wide and a half inch thick with a weight or sheet-metal in between -- the thinner size was used so it would race through the air faster.
There may have had holes in part of the "Runaway strap" which was used specifically on runaways as well though I'm not sure about that. McCarthy does describe the strap as having them however.
At least in sleepers the men who carried out that kind of abuse payed for what they did. R.W. Hatton died in April 1995 at the age of 82, never being held accountable for what he did. At least the bastard is dead and can't never hurt a child or teenager ever again.
Troy Tidwell is still alive and was actually forced to take the stand in court, of course he shamelessly lied about everything except his name, date of birth, and the fact that he worked at the place.
@CVKent317 I remember hearing his the gritty sound of his shoe turning on the floor as he went into his windup. That was in 1953, 54. The sound still makes my skin crawl.
oh boy, that poor man in the beginning...there are some abusers who don't care about the screams. i don't get it...will never fathom it.
and Roger, not just abanonned but holding a dead baby and having a sister too? my goodness...this man is beyond a saint...before this there was another orphanage.
Yeah, in fact I would say that majority of the abusers at FSB did not care about the screams. I think they thought of the screams as being annoying...
This literally hurts my soul...

One thing I learned from my experience at Marianna was there isn't a god. And prayers don't get a call back. Of that I am certain.

Yeah, if there was Hatton and Tidwell would have been smote right where they stood

The ultimate segregational act was that they had one bed for beating whites and one for beating blacks. Crackers are consistant.
