Toy belongs in many Hall of fames. R&R, songwriters, and the Marines HOF. An unbelievable talent as well as a war hero. Toy, Tommy, and a brother Tim (not in the band) all died way before their time.
I've been listening to MTB since 1972 ( I was 12 ). I never been able to choose between Toy and Duane. Isn't it nice that we can have both? Peace, everyone. Love each other.
@wthjrtx1 To answer you question I also love the MTB Band The flute in this song makes me want to take a freight train down to the station and go climb the highest mountain I can Find That what the Flute does to me.
One of the most talented performers of my time. This guy was an awesome songwriter, singer, guitarist and by all accounts a nice guy. Certainly well respected by his peers in the music industry.
How's the south for bikers? Texas flashfloods are not unknown, yes? Mostly I wanna hear people address people as "Miss Judy" or "Mister Dennis" and hear "yes ma'am/sir". And the music. After all R&R could be said to have started in Lubbock with Mr. Buddy Holly.
I always like The Marshall Tucker Band, I played the music when my daughter was around 8 or 9. The came to El Paso around 05 or 06. She was pulled by the lead signer to the stage and sign this song with them. Cool, Huh!
I was too young to ever see the band when Toy, Tommy, Paul and George were in it but growing up they were, by far, my favorite group. Toy has never been given the recognition as a great songwriter and the best to come out of all the southern bands that came out in the 70's. That compliment coming from someone that loves the ABB and Skynard.
Watching this video makes me think of my youth and what a huge part MTB was in it. Paul Riddle is awesome. Ride in Peace, Toy, Tommy & George
The MTB was born in my home town. We even went to the same high school. They were one of the best Southern Rock Bands ever.....so proud of their heritage.
Mrs. Foster I would like to say hello to you and all the good folks of Spartanburg South Carolina. My family were the first settlers to Lexington and Saluda...We have such a fine Southern history and all of us can be proud of The Tucker Band...I was there this spring and partied and had a great time with all my family..God bless from TEXAS!!
This song may as well be the sound track to my life right now,,,i know what this guy was singing about,,exactly how i feel, ready to get up and run as far as i can from her...
Speaking of this great ol' classic song, you have GOT TO SEE a cover of it by a band out of Arizona called "Crimson Storm". Just search "Crimson Storm Cant you see". Check it out!....Ive been a fan of this song my entire life, and i never thought i could ever love that song more. I was wrong. You have GOT To hear this!!!!!!!!!

Toy reminds me a bit of Terry Kath in the fact that you could tell when he sang he was the soul of that group just like you could hear it in Terry Kath when he sang.
Sad, but Tommy Caldwell, Toy's brother was killed in a car accident in 1980 and Toy died in 1993 of heart problems(if I remember right it was a viral infection around the heart). Toy born in 1948 and Tommy born in 1950.
@cooltooth112 THE CALDWELL FAMILY ALSO LOST ANOTHER SON NAMED TIM, WHO ALSO DIED IN A CAR ACCIDENT ONE MONTH BEFORE TOMMY AT THE AGE OF 25. TOYS WIFE, ABBIE, HAS A NEW SITE DEDICATED TO PRESERVING THE "FACTS" ABOUT HER HUSBAND AND THE BAND. USE OFFICIAL BFORE HIS NAME AND YOU SHOULD FIND IT. A GREAT SITE WITH AWESOME PICS AND STUFF ABOUT TOY! MTB ENDED WHEN TOY, GEO MCKORKLE,PAUL RIDDLE (AND TOMMY) LEFT THE BAND. DOUG GREY IS AN EGOMANIACAL JERKOFF, AND A LYING PIECE OF SHIT.
@cooltooth112 on that website I mentioned, I asked Abby that same question and she responded almost immediately. she is so kind. Tim managed the horse farm that she and Toy owned. He trained and showed their arabians. She has some pics of him riding for a show. she also made sure to mention that he was a kind soul and loved dearly by his family.
I never knew Toy Caldwell was a marine and spent 2 years in Vietnam, 1966-1968 and was injured and was sent to Japan for Medical Care for 7 months and then sent back to Vietnam.
Saw them in 73 in Atlanta and it was one memorable weekend....Marshall Tucker, The Allman Brothers and Grinder Switch...It was a southern music revival.....
I'm 32 and I feel CHEATED that I missed this era of music!!! Thanks sooo much for posting this kinda of stuff!!! What the hell is wrong with the music 'artists' of today??? Folks, I don't think well ever see or hear talent like this ever again:(
Toy was a true talent, a shining star, with a soulful heart. Best white boys' blues. The band was one of a kind. I am grateful to each of them for the joy they gave away.
The first concert I ever saw was Marshal Tucker Band. They played with Pure Prairie League in Montgomery, Alabama in 1976. MTB and bands from that era seem to be some of the last that were true to their music. Can't stand what has happened to music since then!
@iminthe70stang You know, i love the Allmans, god, that southern soul...but this is the essence of it that southern thing...soulful, loving, desperate, hopeful...pain. They got my vote for the RnR HOF. Long live The MTB...
You can tell that they're good musicians just by the fact that they added a flute to the band. Very inventive and not what you would expect from a southern rock band. Very nice! They had some great hits didn't they!
Funny hearing that pubescent voice instead of the from the balls singing he did later. Grew up listening to these guys in Central NY. Saw them a few times. Met an old friend and roadie for the band a few years ago. Said they were the nicest guys you could ever want to meet.
Was their ever a more soulful guitarist? ( no ) With apologies to Skynard, CDB, Moly Hatch., Outlaws, Blackfoot, etc., MTB had more country pride, passion,
musicianship, songwriting and charisma than any other Southern Rock band that ever graced a stage. Gray did most of the vocals, and he is great, but Toy was always the heart & soul of the band. That 1st album changed my life. The versatility of the band was incredible! Ride on Tucker boys.....
This is an all time classic, so many men can relate to being made to feel just like this song says. I know about every man who has ever really lost his first real love to a girl who done him wrong can. the lead just cry's the blues. a simple song, but it's perfect. a true timeless classic. Marshal Tucker has many good songs, but this one has stamped history in Southern Rock forever!!!
God no one plays the Flute Like MT Absolutely amazing They take the Flute to a whole other Level. They've done for the Flute what Butter did for bread.
My old man was born and raised in Alabama. He was killed one month before I was borned. I was borned in Pontiac, Michigan. I often went to Alabama with my Fathers best friend and I was listening to this music long before the north ever heard shust greatness. I feel blessed. Later ya' all.
Im 33 years old and this song was written before I was born. Its still one of the best songs I've ever heard. So much better than the junk thats released as 'music' these days..
Toy is SO Young in age that at 2:46 of this video he plays a few wrong notes. Wow, he went on to play this song in all imaginable situations & conditions without a hitch. God Bless him...
I'm gonna find me a hole in the wall and crawl inside and die....................broken heart can make you feel like that ,especially if you just lost a good old southern boy and can't go on without him ♥
Me like, but can"t you see what that woman is doing to me...get youself a doggie. No need to take that freight train or go mountain climbing...(sage advice)
One of,if not THE best "hurtin'" songs ever....Any man that ever loved a woman has felt like that at one time or another..."gonna find me a hole in the wall, gonna crawl inside and die".......
One of,if not THE best "hurtin'" songs ever....Any man that ever loved a woman has felt like that at one time or another..."gonna find me a hole in the wall, gonna crawl inside and die".......
All time greatest version ever! You could tell the song was still fresh in Toy's eyes and soul! I still feel his pain (from whatever was behind it) when I hear this song and when my band performs it!! Awesome MTB...Jimmy, Fishing With Dynamite!! "We Love Ya and We Need Ya"!!
When I imagine heaven, I reckon it must be Toy Caldwell thumb picking and Lowell George in his overalls playing for a bunch of angels who keep asking for encores. Peace be with ya'll.
I think this was about '72-'73. He would have been maybe 25 years old. Looks younger though. Great music. Too bad he had to die at a young age. I was lucky enough to see them live once.
This brings back great memories! It is only natural to turn up the volume anytime their music plays. These guys had so much talent. Music today can not compare to the great MTB.

Toy is SO Young in age that at 2:46 of this video he plays a few wrong notes. Wow, he went on to play this song in all imaginable situations & conditions without a hitch. God Bless him...

Toy Caldwell used his thumb, no pick, he was a unique player. And a great song writer.
