There was a document created by the CIA even prior to the 9/11 attacks which described "blowback" which is something that describes the consequences for occupation of foreign countries. In fact, I think it makes just as little sense for us to pick a fight with irrational actors. In my mind, we should bring all our servicemembers home and focus on rebuilding our defenses, all the while ensuring the rest of the world knows that provoking America's ire would be the surest way to ensure declared war comes to their shores.
@MarineForLiberty to add to what MFL said, how do we look with all the talk of covert missions and plans to bomb Iran (every GOP debate), i would have to say pretty crazy, specially after looking at the war in Iraq and the true reasons for that war and the war in Afghanistan. After a career in military intelligence, where I've had to thoroughly understand world political history, I've come to the conclusion that our foreign policy only begets more foreign policy blunders. We're so deep into a policy of being the tough guy that any notion of scaling back our interventionism is decried as isolationism or backing down in the face of terrorism. All the while, our liberties are being purposely shredded at home. We can't afford our foreign policy, and we shouldn't want to.

@ViceJam, I can't speak for all service members, but I think most want to feel like they are useful in protecting the American people. Many have their good intentions and patriotism hijacked by the war machine and the media that pushes it. I know I personally signed up after Bush appeared to have won the 2000 election after running on a humble foreign policy that would end our role of policing the world and nation building.
I will just give you 2 reasons why USA wants to tie down Israel with the leash (the aid.)
1) Jewish-American neo-con lobby (probably funded by CIA and trade unions at Boeing) are very close to socialists in their ideology & do not see that the aid grows local socialism inside Israel.
2) After Jews were instrumental in creating nuclear bomb in US, USSR, Israel & S. Africa, Pentagon wants to keep Israel weak & dependable to harvest latest technologies & prevent her from trading with our "enemies."
