Correct transation to Kurshi would be "Curonians". It was a Baltic tribe living in western parts of Latvia and Lithuania. They were warriors, excellent sailors and pirates. More information in Wikipedia.
To all u guys debating origins and genetics here, chk [eupedia dot kom]. All baltics r roughly the same setup. Main haplogroups are R1a (general eastern europe) N1c1 (uralic/siberian) and what's funny, estonians r the least finno urgic/uralic.
I hope to see Skyforger in Latvia, someday. I adore this band. I can't understand the lyrics (I'm British), yet they still sound amazing (Also get Latvian friends to translate). Latvian is a sexy language.
@ShaneFan101 Your comment was is one of those infrequent cases when Latvian is considered as sexy(sonorous in my interpretation). :D Thanks for the feedback mate, it's much adored :)
@Tenchcnet My pleasure to give feedback, dewd. I swear I'm going to marry a Latvian man or something when I'm older ;D I know I'm going to move somewhere in Eastern Europe, so I can listen to people speaking similar-ish languages. Note a complete lack of comments from natives. :) Found them completely by chance - theyre good, but to my mind the language is not quite suited for the growling style, goes very well with the lyrical songs though.
@latvietissssss Communism is actually a pretty awesome system. (community, communion) Just some guys (e.g. Stalin) fucked it up and ruined the global symbolic meaning for it. Also, humans generally are too greedy and envious. Just as there are people of Russian nationality that ruin the nation's image, there are also Latvians that do the same. Tukša muca tālu skan.
Kurši (. Latviešu valodā Kurši, vairāk seno formu kursi, vienību skaits kursis, senajās hronikās Kors, kђrs, vācu un Latīņamerikas Curones) - Balt valsts 16 gs, un pēc tam daļa no pašreizējās Latvijas un Lietuvas narodov.
@Raimoization is it? As Lithuania was the biggest country in Europe, I've seen the map, it was big but going to the south, and somehow Latvian lands were not occupied, so you might be little different after all. Though still brothers for sure! ;)
@migkillerphantom they are both and not the direct ancestors though they were just one of the Batic tribes closely related to Latvians ,Lithuanians, and Prussians if you like, but they were forced due to the crusaders to assimilate with what is today known as Samogitians in Lithuania. That is how the Samogitians (Žemaičiai) as such came into the being. The Curonians brought their dialect which had an impact on the languaged of those Lithuanians in the past.
@migkillerphantom And of course they have also assimilated with Latvians as well.No doubt about it mate. You won't believe but there are people around the Curonian lagoon in Lithuania who claim themselves as true Kuršiai although they don't speak a word in Curonian. They are very good fishermen and are keen in smoking fish.
@DelTevynes your thinking is not in favour to the Balts though you should be more optimistic bro.As long as we sing our beautiful songs & dance our dances & celebrate our festivals then nothing ever gonna stop us.The nation's streangth is not in quantity but in its great Spirit.Otherwise what's the use of that nation which is huge & powerful but has forgotten its real roots of its ancesters & has become very bleak & boring & indifferent to the other cultures for it lost its own identity longago
@Areillis Buy how can I be optimistic when in class teacher asks if we still have that love for our country I ofcourse say yes but many say no because of the economy...It just breaks my heart. But yes we should be optimistic brother.
@0Letten0 by foreignors...How can we preserve our culture if here is multyculturism,a economy that can't survive on it's own and of course polish and russian emigration...
@migkillerphantom Sometimes those Lithuanians from the Eastern part of Lithuania can hardly understand the Samogitians as they speak. :) I'll have you know that the Samogitians themselves are divided into four different dialects but they do understand one another as noone else very well. :)
