@maatdoom3 Oh, I don't know about that ~ I heard Little Jimmy Dickens sing it live one night at a Carolina Bluegrass Festival in Smithfield NC and about danced my boots off! YeeeHAAAA!
I used to see these guys a lot during the 1970's, first time about 1971 or 1972 in Scottsboro, Alabama on the same bill with the great Bill Monroe. Wow! That concert was my bluegrass epiphany. As good as it gets, the kind of sound that people like the immortal Jerry Garcia and his part-time bluegrass band could only aspire to.
@LesbianVampireLover "jerry and his part time band " are a big part of bluegrass's popularity. it's california bluegrass , not appalachian. don't diss and dont forget who played fiddle in that band neither.
@jjoocckkee Do your homework. Sonny Osbourne had a special 6 string built, not a "banjitar" like you are talking about. It was like a 5 string with an extra string on the bottom, tuned E or G, i cant remember. But you can see the tuner button coming up through the center of the headstock.
Bloody hell, this stuff rocks!! The Osborne Brothers are damn cool; skilled and talented! They deliver much more pathos than most of today's crap. I love bluegrass while I can't say the same about Country (with absolute respect, naturally). I'm an utterly rare specimen of 5 string banjo picker in Italy. Thanks for posting this vid.
Ya Know...I might be a redneck...and I might be a hillbilly...but I watch this vid a few times a week.... I love it!! If you don't ...that's your problem...leave me alone!!!
I've heard of the Osborne Brothers for decades but only recently started listening to them. What an awesome group! This tenor singing is the best there is!
What's up with all this weird "white" stuff?... Since when were the Osborne brothers ever supporting white supremacy?? They're just good ol' bluegrass is all, fucken'a.
Sometimes a song just hits it on all the right levels--the moon and stars lined up just right at just that time to make a great hit I'm glad I can witness now.
thanks for the Jonas bros comment; it is only because they have NO talent; just media hype; no, absolutely no real talent; can't play any instrument and would be NOTHING without the studio
Holly crap! My dad kept telling me i needed to hear Bobby sing when he was in younger, that it was amazing. but jeez!!!! Amazing is an understatment!!!!!
Just type in "Bluegrass: Country Soul clip" for more of this festival! If you grew up in the 70s this is a must see show and it is on DVD and quite clear.
Packed with live performances, interviews, impromptu jam sessions and behind-the scenes footage, this documentary captures a legendary 1971 three-day outdoor bluegrass festival. Seasoned performers and rising stars such as Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Jimmy Martin, the Osborne Brothers, Del McCoury, J.D. Crowe, Chubby Wise, Roy Acuff and more share a makeshift stage in the heart of small-town North Carolina for a magical, musical good time.
@meanlezbo Actually no, he was always like that live. The crowd had a way of just psyching him up to the point he would be bouncing around like a rabbit hound on the stage.
I grew up listening to bluegrass and country music. Every year we travelled to bluegrass festivals throughout Ohio. This song brings back a strong memory. My mom and my cousin noticed Bobby and Sonny glancing at them and making comments to each other. My mom and cousin were top heavy, if you know what I mean. When Bobby went into Rubyyyyyyyyyyyy.... they stretched. Broke those boys up.
omg my uncle carlton from louisiana used 2 sing this...but in a lower key and didnt go real high...and he could hold those long notes real long...i mean it would be abt 17 seconds long...i wasnt born yet but i have a video tape that i watch and its basically family bluegrass...and when i watch it i challenge him to see who can hold the note the longest =)...i know he cant do it now...hes to old...but i love him anyway
I don't know what year it is...but if you think this is the punk rock of bluegrass (which you're pretty much right), listen to "Pallet on the floor" by J.E. Mainer and His Mountaineers
I am pretty sure it is "coal," not "gold." and it is not a man's name. Brown coal mining is a certain kind of coal mining. Look it up on the Internet. Besides, coal mining makes sense because there are coal mines where these guys are from and where this kind of music is prevalent. No gold mines.
I think 'diggin in the brown gold mine' is correct. Check out Buck's version; almost as good. Search on buck owens - ruby (are you mad). Took me month to find it.
Correction on what I quoted previously: "Ill set you in the shade, and shovel with the spade. I'm digging in the Brown Coal Mine." Those are the lyrics that explain why Ruby is mad at him!
westernsharpie: The song is about a coalminer who has to to shovel in the mine and his girl is mad because he cannot stay with her. He says, "I will set you in the shade and go shovel with the spade. I am digging in the Bronco(sp?) mine." I think that is the gist of it.
Just a fabulous video. Man, do they do an amazing job of singing and playing. I play this video over and over again. They look like they are having a great time as well. Thanks so much for posting it. We need more music like this today.
