Just saw this performed live in Tokyo- an annual tradition here this time of year- wishing I too could have stood up and sang along. Hopefully someday before I die.....
Beethoven composed it, but never heard it. At the time of the first performance, he was totally deaf, yet led the orchestra. When the performance ended, he was facing the orchestra, wondering how the audience liked the piece. An orchestra member had to turn him around, to see the thunderous ovation that the piece and he, were receiving. TRUTH!
this is absolutely, the closest thing mankind has ever been to world peace and mutual understanding between nations.... i am having tears listening to the highlight at 7:05 ... having Japanese, German, Australian, African and American choirs singing, absolutely fantastic... all continents and symbolically, all races are represented. amazing.
Lemme ask ya's: Who here thinks in 300 - 400 years from now, ANYONE is going to be singing a Lady Gaga or Justin Beiber song like this, at some Olympic event?!
@Cutter1018 You are so right; Beethoven : eternal : gaga : fading --My eternals,( I always imagine them sitting and singing together on pink clouds up there, somewhere over the rainbow): Beethoven, Pavarotti, Freddy Mercury and, maybe, the Great Callas. Anyone agree?
I watched this when I was six years old. It stuck in my mind so much that years later whenever I hear this song I still remember it. I couldn't remember what this was, for the life of me, until my parents were tonight watching Immortal Beloved and mentioned these games when Ode to Joy played again.
So now I'm nineteen and watching this again. Been a long, long time. :)
one of my favorite parts is right at 2:37. but it's the harmony part at the bottom of the theme that i like:) it just sounds pleasant. I love Beethoven:D he is epic!
This whole production was very much in the spirit of the Olympics and music as a whole: coming together and transcending cultural boundaries. A. Ma. Zing.
@jackbeatlessan Better to start with something easy :) That is something which is a little hard even to transalte. Most of transaltiions of this song i saw so far are... well always a little bit different than the original meaning. But i like your comment. Liebe Grüße aus Österreich :) start to translate that :) Beethoven is a Master of Music.
London needs to plan something similar where many nations are participating simultaneously especially in 2012. That way the whole word can be on the same emotional level feeling of love, joy, and hope, peace and goosebumps too!!
Holy shit. 3:15 - 3:36. Probably the most ridiculously awesome, triumphant, powerfully divine, joyful, and bad ass 21 seconds of music ever. I actually had a tear running down my face cause it was so ridiculously awesome.
Whatever kind of mood I'm in when I watch this it just uplifts me to my soul: I'm sure just as Beethoven would have intended., not to mention Ozawa, the Tenors and the rest of the world singing! THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS
The world needs this video now more than ever. We need to stop beating each other into the dirt and respect one another and build a common future, We'll share that common future anyway, no matter what we do. Bettter we have the sense to figure out now how to make it work.

The earthquake and tsunami were sent by God - divine retribution - to punish the Japanese people for the unspeakable cruelty they displayed during the Pacific war.
The most vile, contemptible and despicable race on the planet.
At 2:20, I saw the four pictures from four different places, and I wonder what the world would be like if there was a day when everyone, for some amount of time, just sang in perfect unison?
@Morogoro I truly forgot how magnificent these opening ceremonies were. The Japanese people did a fantastic job. I have traveled the world and the Japanese with out a doubt are the most polite, gracious hosts to their guests in the world.!!
@siskadora When Jesus who is the Christ returns to establish the government of the Almighty on the earth then you will see true peace on earth and goodwill toward all mankind!! This is going to happen very soon but as Satan is dethroned the world is going to be put through much tribulation and trouble. @GenPhilosopher we don't know that until we are dead, so why condemn so early? There are good principles to learn, and why not believe in something good?
@thisisabadname Your question is totally out. This is broadcasted from Japan and broadcast rights are selled to TV stations (its normal market).
