@aimlesfez you are so right, once you get to a certain point you really have to start focusing on the playing the player and matchups more than knowing your own character.
Yo ReNiC, hang in there bro. I know what you mean exactly, especially once you hit B rank(if you haven't all ready). Your persistence gives me inspiration :)
this may seem dumb, but have you completed the game on the hardest level with cody? arcade isn't the same as human vs human, but it does help to play the cheap a.i. on hardest. also, try playing through on hardest without losing a match. besides that, the feeling of plateauing happens to every new player. i would frequently go up and down before realizing that a character change might be necessary, or maybe i needed to rethink overall game strategy. cody might not be for you. try another.
@Pap3rMoon You can't combo after overhead, only if it hits while they are standing, which almost never happens. You are even negative on hit when they are crouching...
Was a bit too fast with posting my previous comment, later on i saw alot of things, like throwing more, cr.mk followed with cr.lk xx... using zonk etc. Still auto pilot too much though and frametraps have huge gaps in them. Try baiting reversals more, because they were definately doing them. The other cody knew the gaps in your attacks and abused that. Stand teching against other codys. Few cr.jabs walk back and then do a f.mp or crackkick, you see if reversal, and bait their normals no autopilt
You need to learn more than basics in sf4, there are a ton of differences to how you should play in each matchup, don't just focus on one mindset of how you think you should play to succeed. A lot of matchups are played so differently to each other, knowledge is power.
Hey Renic. I think youre doing really well. But t here are a lot of blockstrings that are quite safe and incorporate more than one frametrap. Ryyan Hunter did a lot oof the research and has great short vids about it
your problem is just its mostly match knowledge since you need to get used to the game, cody is a beast just keep on going! the only problem i see with cody is getting out of extreme pressure since he cant do other thing than zonker and if it misses thats another free punish for your opponent.
oh and renic against ryu.. i just figured this out in 2012 they buffed the hitbox of codys medium ruffian kick so.. ryu sweep can now be punished by cody medium ruffian kick. block his sweep and then do the medium ruffian it will be counted as a reversal at maximum range.. if u block it and its very close u can punis a crouching heavy punch to hp criminal upper
btw renic umm try not to use cr medium kick too much its negative on hit and block... you should use it to avoid cross ups and anti air some character specific jump ins. oh and ive noticed ur not mixing ur grabs enough. u want to get ur opponent to begin teching throws so u can hit them with a frame trap.
I haven't played 2012, but I used to play Cody quite a bit. Why does it seem like all the Codys are using Ultra 2 even on non-projectile characters? Ultra 1 was always more combo-able, not to mention the damage output =/
I'm no Cody player but I think it's because it starts faster (7 frames vs 13 frames I think) and has a lot more range; that makes it better for punishing blocked moves or whifs that ultra1 can't punish. And it does good chip damage which may be useful sometimes.
continued: Other than that, you're looking a lot better. Be sure to be plinking cr jab to cr strong to make it an even easier link (it's already a 2 frame link I believe). Plinking all around is an incredibly useful technique in SFIV, not sure if it was utilized in 3s or not. Learn to space EX ruffians under fireballs to catch people offguard. Hell thrown out randomly it can hit occasionally too. I expect your cody is gonna be looking much better very soon bro, keep it up!
at 3:36 when you hit his focus with the overhead... Whenever you hit a standing opponent with cody's overhead, you can combo out of it with cr.lk then whatever else you feel like at that moment.
Go for counter hit crouching fierce into ex rocks off of a frame trap bait, you can follow it up with anything you want, and it hits hard and looks sick. Also, try to use frame traps more often. On certain characters, you can end strings with light criminal upper because it's relatively safe (I think like -6 on block or something? maybe not as bad). Cody's overhead is dirty too, so use that occasionally. On wakeup, your only option is pretty much EX zonk since EX CU has hittable startup.
RENIC, where do you go when you want to learn specifics about your character? I'm a long time spectator and first time fighting game player, and I'm having alot of trouble finding comboes, wake up options and other stuff. Wut do?
Someone already said this, but to be clear, Shoryuken (dot com) has a forum, and within it, character-specific sub-forums for every character. This forum has stuff like that for many other games outside of just SSFIV, too.

Honestly, and I know this is going to sound scrubby, but I think you're using Zonk way too little.
As a Gen player,Zonk totally shuts down my poking game, except for sweeps. So it basically forces me to go nuts and jump in alot.

You just need experience, knowing your exact gameplan in each situation.
Yes its less exciting, but its how the top players win. Minimise risk, and make all situations in your favour.
