Al Jolson was still a popular performer in 1942, even though his popularity was somewhat dimmed during this period [he wouldn't be a "superstar" again until "The Jolson Story" was released in 1946]- and was best known for performing in blackface, which was "acceptable" as entertainment at that time (going back to the original minstrel shows of the 19th century). Warner Bros. caricatured Jolson, in and out of blackface, in their cartoons over the years {cf. "Porky's Preview" (1941)].
@Medevila Agreed, too much selfishness... imagine enacting excise taxes on consumer goods(like the SELFISH people driving around in new huge SUV's) at least to help finance our current wars. How old are you Brandon, just curious?
I'm African-American, and II don't find this racist. If you're going to watch something from before the civil rights movement then you have to take into consideration the time in which it was made. So Bugs parodies Al Jolson, no big deal. People need to lighten up, and stop making mountains out of molehills.
what i think the real racist part of this is that they banned this just because bugs bunny puts on a black face near the end. i didnt see much racism within his blackfaced act, in factm im pretty sure it was a parody of something, i find nothing racist with that.if anybody can prove me wrong be my guest
I really don't see anything extremely offensive about this considering that Bugs was actually referencing a Jewish singer who was famous for the whole Blackface gag rather than being outright racist like how Bugs was in the earlier cartoons.
there's nothing racist about the black face gags i don't even see whats wrong with them they are ALWAYS deleted it's so weird and a bugs bunny cartoon was deleted due to the hunter being Black Faced in "All This And Rabbit Stew" the cartoon was funny though i didn't see what was racist about it
Leon Schlesinger had an exclusive distribution deal through Warner Brothers for his studio's cartoon output from 1930 through the summer of 1944, when they bought him out. He also produced some "live" "B" Westerns, and occasionally farmed his animators out for special title sequences for other, smaller studios. This was a special assignment for the U.S. Treasury, as they needed a reminder for movie patrons to buy Savings/Defense Bonds at the outset of World War II (January 1942).
@PympHarD Everyone is racist, even african americans.
However, the "bugs bunny in blackface" thing was a reference to a Jewish musician known as Al Jolson who was famous for doing the whole blackface stunt while singing "My Mammy." (The song featured in "Any Bonds Today?") He also fought against discrimination on Broadway.
My thoughts are that this was a tool of its time the creator wasnt really racist just creating what was funny or common at the time and if I sound stupid I do apoligise
Him appearing black wasnt controversial at the time was it? Its only very recently that we have gone fucking ott on the racism to the point where whites are actually discriminated as a result.
What does he say when he goes all blackface? I hear "Nyaaa, Any stamps today? Give kiddies would be blessed if we all invest in the USaaaaa, Saaaaaaaaaammy, mah, mah uncle sammy" Can anyone help me?
Most everyone here hates the war, now that we've realized we fucked up. There are still dumbshits that say "It's for your freedom," though. Freedom from what? An insurgent group that poses almost no threat to us? We went in on false pretenses. The war-mongers are in the minority now, but it's still frustrating to see them.
Yah, well, note I only talk about those who propagate war with the "Freedom" card. I'm really not talking about the American poblation in general. Tho I disagree with the "minority" thing a bit.
True, most of the conservatives in this country are still talking about how the war will save us or whatever. Save us from what? Whenever I ask, I always get a vague "the terrorists" answer or some variant.
Well, since the term 'Terrorist' applies to someone who brings terror in order to accomplish their goals, seems like these people are in fact not our saviours but the terrorists themselves (and not those they accuse).
Wow, incredible how a simple old cartoon propaganda can expand a big discussion.
no, it's honest to goodness misplaced good intentions.
We worked so hard to become a country of liberty that we are all to ready to defend it. It's when passions rise does judgment waver. We never were a "warrior nation" not even in this war. If we were, we would conquered the world or died trying.
I'm not talking about your country, I'm talking about propagandists in specific.
Well, from what other people see, since it's independence, the US War's always has bussines porpusses on it's main causes. But why do they do to convinve their people to joint their army? Make them think they are "threatining their freedom".
Plus, it sounds like if the US tries to fool their people thinking there's no liberty on other countries.
The blackface is not the only thing controversial about this. I dont' recall seeing this growing up as a kid... But Yeah, My taxes supposedly goes to the war as is, plus the recession kicked my ass as well so I can't even afford "freedom" anymore.
Wow. Propaganda, in my cartoons? More likely than one might think.
My grandparents were practically religious about bonds even to this day because they grew up/ fought in WWII. They always told me to buy bonds, but I don't because things are different now. Back in WWII, bonds were used to buy bullets and build ships, but now the government wastes most of the money they get from the citizens, so why should I do anything more than simply pay my taxes?
Maybe so, but the concept of the minstrel show is still racist. I don't think Al Jolson did it to show his personal feelings about blacks, but the show itself is meant as a mockery.
First released in January 1942 as part of a special campaign to sell "Defense Bonds" in theaters {you could get them at the box office after the show, "At This Theater"}, shortly after after World War II began. Bob Clampett directed this one, using the "Fat Elmer" first seen in "Wabbit Twouble", released a few weeks before. Irving Berlin wrote "Any Bonds Today?" in mid-1941, also part of the U.S. Treasury's savings bond campaign at that time.
