But most importantly people have the FREEDOM to choose who to get their care from, and doctors are free to practice privately, which is an individual right. Socialized healthcare is limited to what the government can provide for it (just like public schools are shitty, puclic hospitals are shitty). There is no competition and you are forced to pay for other people.

The only studies I could find from these authors do not show that the CDC claims are wrong--note that the CDC never said that being overweight or obese did not positively correlate with mortality rates. The evidence they present says something entirely different; that being slightly or moderately overweight is negatively correlated to mortality rates.

yakooza, free market health care is infinitly better than socialized healthcare. In free market, hospitals compete with each other. But most importantly people have the FREEDOM to choose who to get their care from, and doctors are free to practice privately, which is an individual right. Socialized healthcare is limited to what the government can provide for it (just like public schools are shitty, puclic hospitals are shitty). There is no competition and you are forced to pay for other people.

My grandfather had his pacemaker installed after a heart attack, and my uncle had his skull split when he was kicked by a cow on his dairy farm. Both got the care they needed, and would have had to pay thousands, that they didn't have, for the same care in the states. Both are over 50.

Free-market is not an ideology. It is simply the best way individuals have discovered to coordinate production and exchange goods and service with one another. Countless economies, ranging from Chile in the mid-70's to Ireland in the 90's and now Eastern Europe in the last 2 decades have moved toward "such a system." All have done so without disaster, and living standards in each of these countries are substantially higher than when under socialism.

Look up the effect of obesity on health and lifespans, there are plenty of studies done.
Apply that to populations and % of overweight people in them (looks these up no yahoo or wiki)

They don't. Although the French system faces many challenges, the World Health Organization rated it the best in the world in 2001 because of its universal coverage, responsive healthcare providers, patient and provider freedoms, and the health and longevity of the country's population. The United States ranked 37.

Have you googled "Socialized Medicine"? If you do your research, you'll find the the benefits of socialized medicine are greatly outweighed by the negatives.
Socialized medicine is by far not the solve-all solution to affordable healthcare.

So the question now is: What have YOU been looking at? Is water service so bad where you live? Electricity an awful thing too? How about the interstate system?
Perhaps it's just me, but I'm pretty damned happy with public universities, water/power utilities, public transit, roads and highways, park services, libraries, and museums.
I am lucky enough to be able to attend the Carnegie Museum of Natural History for free with my student ID. I'm a philosophy and neuroscience/cog sci. student at Pitt.

Quality of care suffers in France because hospitals and doctors resist government requirements to report their success and failures.
These are two known facts pertaining to French health care.

Socialized medicine is not a panacea--I agree with you. It is, however, a cheaper and more efficient alternative to the system we have. If the increase in life expectancy and decrease in preventable deaths is what you want, that is and not just to line the pockets of those on wall street.

Quality is an ambiguous term, no doubt, however, the second half of the statement is what I would like to emphasize, "...doctors resist government requirements to report their success and failures."
In many instances, failures are indeed not recorded. It's clear to see that a misrepresentation of absolute quality can quickly be assumed.
The socialized medicine concept appears very sugar coated, until the real mechanisms of human flaw enter the equation.

Do you really expect pure honesty in every institution? It's not plausible.
It's been historically known that socialism is more corrupt than capitalism. I wouldn't count on socialist medicine being any exception.
If you expect to endorse social medicine based upon one organization's raw statistics, I wouldn't hold much faith in that. You have to look at factors from all perspectives with an open mind.

China, Canadian, Britain, & Korean social medicine: health care services were/are strictly rationed, understaffed, and overworked. Socialized medicine allows for only one option: government discretion. This is not good health care.
Is it any wonder why one of the most progressive countries in the world (China) has partially switched to private medicine?
Private medicine allows profit incentives to encourage more physicians, which would be more adequately rewarded for positive performance.

I love the argument NathanZimmerman is using. Anyone who looks into knows is faulted.
Here is why, look at the number of us people who are overweight (this is one of the largest factors deceasing length of age in industrialized nations today).
Look at the number of urban deaths and deaths relasted to carless driving.
Calculate for this number and Americans are one of the longest living people in the world.
So as long as you get out of the city, drive safe, and eat less; then you'll be fine.

First, this argument (if successful) negates one of my claims--that life expectancy is less for a medically related reason.
Two points on this matter:
1. You assume that obesity and diet are in no way connected to regular checkups. This assumption is at least questionable and more likely highly suspect.
2. As previously stated, the french spend less and are happier with their medical care. This, we know to be true even IF there were some conspiracy to cover up medical data (which is also crazy).

So I was looking for some kind of substantiation for the claims that you made and found quite the opposite. Evidently, according to the CDC, people being moderately overweight actually IMPROVES life expectancy.
Feel free to look it up for yourself--what this shows, in any case, is that you have very little in the way of methodology to support your claims. You've come up with a possible case and assumed it to be true without providing good reasons.

Just google it and see that overweight and obisty both make you die younger. And that if you account for this and the urban and us heavy use of cars you get US citizen living as long as most "top" industrialized nations and above some you place so high.

The problem is that you have provided NO methodology for your claim that when you account for these idiosyncrasies the US average life span is as good or better than other industrialized nations.
Furthermore, I've not ignored any facts that have been presented to me--I can't 'ignore' facts that I've never seen. I saw the authors you presented, looked up their work and found none that were in contradiction with the CDC study. That is not ignoring so much as putting them in context.

I do not have the magical powers that you guys do to know if something is good or not solely based on the category it falls into. Us regular folk have to investigate to find out if something that is 'socialist' is bad news--we can't judge a priori.

The only studies I could find from these authors do not show that the CDC claims are wrong--note that the CDC never said that being overweight or obese did not positively correlate with mortality rates. The evidence they present says something entirely different; that being slightly or moderately overweight is negatively correlated to mortality rates.
The studies that I could find from your authors are not mutually exclusive with the CDC claims.

I did read what you wrote. You claim that there have been no successful socialized healthcare systems. The problem, as I have stated before, is that I have GIVEN you a successful socialized system and you have ignored it.
What's more, you listed the UK, and Canada as failed systems.
If they are failed then we are worse--they are above us in WHO rankings of the world's healthcare systems.
Complain all you want, the US system spends more than any other country per capita for fewer results.

Quasi free market?!
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were promised that if they failed for the last 7 decades that the government would back up them if they fail.
As a result, they backed up lending institutions who gave home loans and told them to lend to poor people. If the people could not pay it back, FM and FM would back their loans.
Then when people couldn't pay, it dominoes back to the government, and the taxpayer bailed it out.
That is NOTHING like the free market.

Correct, but the world market is like a bucket of water. Do you care if one side of the bucket gets filled more than the other?
The same is true for oil.
There is a total world demand for oil that can increase or decrease, if someone's need for oil is satisfied, that means that there is excess supply of oil somewhere else.
When supply exceeds demand, the price drops.
