  • My teacher gave this piece to me to play as my solo, and now I am thoroughly terrified. This is beautiful though. If I can pull it off, I will feel so incredibly accomplished.

  • Top man , Top performance :D

  • OMG!! i have absolutely fallen in love with this song! i cant get enough the beginning is beautiful the whole song is absolutely beautiful, this makes me want to learn cello, i play the flute and i definantly wouldnt mind learning cello its beautiful <3

  • Esta pieza es una de las más importantes de cello, aunque es subestimada por durar 7 minutos.Interpretada por Webber suena EXCELENTE <3

  • I can only dream that when I play this piece in January at the Young Artist Competition I can get within a shadow of how amazingly Julian played this piece. My cello teacher is trying to get me to play with this kind of intensity, and I plan to work even harder on it now that I have heard this! Hopefully if I can even do a third as well as he did I can win the $1000 prize. Wish me luck! Julian is an inspiration to me!

  • @MickeyBug8 best of luck!

  • @MickeyBug8 Good luck playing Faure's Elegy at the competition! My love is having a piano concert this Wednesday. She has never heard me at a concert or competition before, so I'll be playing the Elegy at Wednesday's concert as a surprise for her. This recording has inspired me to do so! I wish you all the best in your cello studies.

  • 4:43 oh my god..

  • @stevemaster247 i know. it's intense. i'm afraid.

  • Look at his hands! :O

  • I've listened to this a number of times and tonight I'm struck by the beauty of the last note.

  • Extraordinario !!!

  • I love this interpretation.Bravo Julian.

  • That of Jacqueline du pre is also beautiful, quite different. More soft. It is hard to judge what is the best performance. I assume that it depends even on the day. He plays wonderfully, but I prefer this piece somewhat softer.

  • did anyone notice that the pianist does a good job? either way, it was splendid.

  • DAT. FEELING.

  • So beautiful. nothing else need be said.

  • its impossible to listen to this powerful and emotional music... to appreciate it fully, you do not listen to it. you feel it.

  • dat nose.... BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • I keep coming back to listen to this. Webber's playing of this piece moves me so deeply.

  • sublime

  • Both the piano and the cello sou in sound beautiful in separate and together...

  • I'm going to his bithday concert at the Royal Festival Hall on April 14th!

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • I thout this is the best performance... but please listen to Aleksandr Khramouchin's performance of this Elegie and just compare.... Yo Yo Ma mentioned here is so faraway from these two guys....

  • Just enjoy it, instead of comparing this version and that version. I like Webber, Ma, Du Pre, but when my 12 yo plays this, it brings tears to my eyes.

  • Yikes. I bet the fingers on his left hand are as hard as rocks.

  • I have seriously watched this video over like 20 times.

    SO AMAZING.

    Playing this in May :)

  • I want to take cello classes, i just want to feel what does it feel playing a great piece such this.

  • Hey guys - it's Brahms at the piano!!

  • beautiful. I'm going to be playing this piece for a contest in a few months, I hope I'll be able to get it to sound at least a fraction as beautiful as this recording . . . . XP

  • Makes you want to exist, if only to hear something like this.

    Magic.

  • seriously, every time i hear him play the first note of this piece...my heart starts beating.

    phenomenal!

  • out of this world

  • The principle cellist in our college's orchestra got an arrangement of this piece for 8 cellos, so he had to round a bunch of us up to run it for him. It was fantastic.

  • The phrasing from 3:56-4:28 gets me every time. I just listen to it over and over. I can't think of any other word to describe it but sublime. This piece is like emotion translated into soundwaves. Hats off to Julian Lloyd Webber for this beautiful piece of artistry.

  • Gran nivel!!

  • Simply amazing! The passion with which he plays at about 5 to 5:30 and the rich, dark fullness of sound at the closing are stunning.

  • I heard this live yesterday. This peace is just written for him

  • The music is so beautiful. Does anyone know which album/dvd it is?

  • It's so perfect!!!! I love Gabriel Faure and the Elegy is so beutiful!!!!

  • lou ferrigno called he wants his hulk hair back, jk

beautiful interpretation, probably the best i've heard...the piano was a bit much in this recording,

  • What I love about Julian is that he always shares.

  • verdaderamente hermoso y triste, como la vida ...

  • This piece gives me chills every time, especially knowing Faure dedicated it to his best friend who died.

  • fantastic! a whole life passing by in 7 minutes...

  • ...en su mundo...

  • I get to play this for my grade 9 cello exam, im so excited! :) It's such a beautiful piece

  • @CelloChick78 Grade 9??? I thought (in the UK at least) the top grade was grade 8...

  • @alirobertson93 there are 10 grades in canada

  • the piano was a little loud, i was trying to concentrate on the cello but the piano was just a touch overbearing. but i LOVe his tone.

  • Love this! Just love it. So sad..... Can't stop crying, so beautiful......

  • amazing !

  • i'm fucking crying....

  • bello bello♥

  • Me facina como toca , pero me recuerda a alguien que perdi.

  • Amazing!

  • Meravigliosa Elegia!!!

    Grazie,Angelo

  • Love it, was a very interesting interpretation.

  • I LOVE THIS Beautiful...

  • Webber plays with such fidelity to the composer, clarity and directness. He puts his person in service to the music. An example of clean virtuosity for me.

  • I'm playing this on Bass for my Senior recital and I watch this every day to inspire me to continue pushing myself!! Thanks Julian!

  • Great tone, produces rich black sound and light blue in another. It represents a lonely walk in the woods of an old man, while his memories of happiness and sadness come and go. I would say Sadness is remembering the dreary things that happenned and happiness is its hope in the gloomy matter.

  • Wow. His interpretation is so moving and delicate...He plays with incredible passion.

  • Wow. He is such an inspiring and passionate player...

  • in my opinion, this is one of the cello works ever

  • C'est magnifique, la façon d'allier le vibrato avec le morceau....

  • Wow. That is the best interpretation of this piece. Ever. It's a) intimidating how good he is. I'm almost afraid to go home and practice it now..and b)definitely motivating.

  • By far the best interpretation I've ever heard.

  • AMAZING!! Simply astonishing. Brilliant work Julian. As I am also playing this piece, I am amazed at Julian Lloyd's ability to express in this beautiful piece by Faure. He plays especially well in the second phrase.

  • i cant stop commenting this... i'm playing this as my solo and wow.... seriously, there are no words to describe how beautiful and nostalgic this piece is... <33

  • One of the best interpretations of this piece of music. Jackie had the Elgar, Yo-Yo has the Bach Suites, Slava had the Shostakovich works, and Julian can certainly claim this piece as his own. I've seen Yo-Yo preform this piece (he visited my high school) and while it was a great performance, it doesn't even come close to Julian's interpretation.

  • @dupreslavafan77 Yo Yo's interpretations for Bach are not good. I agree with the other two though.

  • I really don't think that the interpretation of bach by yo-yo ma is better than Rostropovich, of course its good, but not even close to slava.

    But that's my opinion.

  • @dupreslavafan77 dont forget that rostropovich totally owns the prokofiev sinfonia concerti movements.

  • @dupreslavafan77 Did you say that to his face?

  • Excellent! He doesn't do anything fancy with the vibrato, so it keeps the simplicity and peacefulness of Faure's melody. Great to listen to if your learning this piece!

  • seriously, this is the most beautifull piece i've ever heard. I heard it for the first time, almost a year ago, and now i still can not get enough of it, i keep on playing this piece. This version is just amazing!

  • This piece is amazing.

  • he looks so handsome in his prime times.. <3

  • WOW!! This is beautiful!

    Just amazing..

  • Julian Lloyd-Webber is just amazing...how does he compare with Du Pre...assuming there is such a thing...as "compare"...

  • ohhh......my......god that was so beautiful. his tone was warmand full and he played it so well. i strive to be like him. plus he had an outstanding cello

  • wow, he is absolutely amazing...this interpretation of the piece is so mesmerizing to listen to..fantastic, i love his intimacy within the music, and the look of sincerity when he plays...wonderful..

  • the strings are bursting into tear and the piano is consoling them !

  • That is so beautiful to say! Great description! =)

  • I really like Julian's interpretation of this piece. I prefer it greatly over Yo-Yo Ma's performance. :]

  • My favourite interpretation by a long way… so innocent, so beautiful, intimate, such controlled anguish. He doesn't try anything fancy or overdo it. It is perfectly balanced.

Perhaps this is why it is the only interpretation I have seen so far where commenters are not arguing over criticism.

  • amazing!! ♥♥

  • beautiful... just beautiful...♥♪♫♪♥

  • Every time I hear this song I get a lump in my throat and I want to cry. Thank you so much for uploading this beautiful interpretation of this masterpiece.

  • the first reapeat when it goes Piano is unbelivable, i get chills every time

  • Magnifique interprétation de cette très belle pièce de Faure !

  • perfecto ;)

  • thank you for sharing, for me so beautiful.. this is my life, everytime i hear this song i have a woman in my mind, it still makes so emotional but feels good to feel, this song makes me know i have lived a life and with emotion God bless

  • amazing playing...thank you gindobray

  • I love his interpretation of the Elegy. I only wish he wouldn't play open strings, it just sounds way too harsh with that wonderful vibrato.

  • Comment removed

  • @Joshuamonkey You can do a vibrato motion with an open hand when you're playing the last open c.

  • that was phenomenal

  • I am playing his arrangement... it is great!

  • I think I just fell in love with this interpretation of Elegie

  • I want to cry every time i hear it !! SImply Brilliant....thank you very much for uploading it

  • i am in love with his hands. it makes all of the shifting look so effortless. i wonder what his range is with those things. so jealous.

  • love this <3 so beautiful.

  • perfect...

  • i find that every note he plays shows a pain of his inside and you dont know where it comes from...

i feel like the deepest part of my heart offers all its secrets...

  • you're right

  • wen he does the first repeat, and plays it really diminuendo is like.... the best thing evvvver great video!

  • He makes it sound so solemn and sweet, humble yet in a poetic sense completely naked and vulnerable infront of a crowd.

  • J'ai écouté plusieurs versions et celle de Mr Webber est la plus belle, la plus sensible, la plus nuancée, la plus expressive. En un mot, la plus fauréenne.

    Bravo et merci.

  • Gorgeous.

  • i don't like yo yo ma. he's a machine.if you play like julian lloyd you know human nature

  • grand compositeur et la musique!

    merci de partager!

  • I wish the camera would back up more often so I could see what his fingerings are.

  • Same here!

  • Julian is great at the vibratto! very smooth and yet sounding great

  • i really like his rendition of elegie. it's paper-thin qualities and sensitive balance makes it truly beautiful. bravo, mr. webber!

  • In my opinion, this piece tells a story just as well as any theatre or visual art piece. In a way, ALL art is story telling; the only difference between music and other forms is that music is more abstract and more emotionally-based.

  • i can play this song, but geeze Julian puts on a clinic

  • That was excellent

  • GREAT!!!! Bravo!

  • It`s amazing!!

  • great!:)))

  • This one is with the right emotions! I like it, it is better than the Yo Yo ma version !

    Lovely !

  • I prefer the yo yo ma's vercion...it's much singing...but i must admit that webber is more sentimental and poetical! scuse me for my low english...

  • Try this! As a cellist myself I find it amazingly relaxing to sing cello parts. When you listen try to match the pitch of every note. See how easy it is! cause the cello has a timbre closest to that of the human voice, neat huh? Bravo Julian!

  • i do the same thing with my cello lol

  • the comeback to the original theme around 5 min is SO heartwrenching. music like that can only come from very talented artists

  • wow. is all i can really say. although, every note has this color about it. when i close my eyes i can see every color that comes with each note. so sweet and beautiful

  • I think that the hardest part to playing this is the emotion, not the technique. Anyone concur?

  • I'm not a cellist, but I think maintaining the structure of the piece while investing huge amounts of emotion would be very very difficult, here. To not loose yourself in the simple yet haunting melody seems like it would require an intense amount of control.

  • Lots of times it does. That's why I try to memorize most stuff I play. The one thing that usually makes me slip is when I actually start to think about the technical part of the music, like what position am I supposed to be in or whether I'm going at the right tempo.

  • @ilovethecello

i love the cello too :P!

  • wow. This is absolutely beautiful.

You can hear and see the emotion he put into the piece. Just look at his face. He looks so serene

  • That was so beautiful. :')

Does anyone else notice how white his hands are in comparison to his face?

  • I play it now, but on the viola...It's amazing

  • wow, i can just feel the emotion that he puts behind it. it must have been amzing to watch this live

  • my fav. piecee omfg!! i wish i could play it like him! its amazing!

  • man i'd fucking belt my kid if he was like jackospacko090

gotta show that shit to my mom to enlighten her about how much of a blessed mother she is, having a son like me

  • 2 bad his name isn't as easy to remember as yo yo ma

  • great... I just wanted to say: Jackospacko, that's not SAD; it's FEELING & MELODY

  • I'm more into the du Pres and the Rostropoviches, but this piece has really made me warm to Julian...

  • Fauré's Elégié is my cello favorite ^^

  • way better than yo yo ma lol

  • wonderful stuff. What a beautiful tone he has.

  • wow you are seriously all sad motthers :L

i jst heard my mum listennin to this and i said something to her and i feel i have to say something to the real sad ass bitches who listen to this shit also wow , listen to pwd or 30stm for once sad assholes :)

  • I take it you did not go to University as both your language and your attitude certainly depict a "low" brow thinking. Look, if you like some other kind of music great, I have no intention of telling you the stuff you listen to is .... I think you need to realize this is great stuff and a great performance for this kind of music. Take your bat and ball and go play somewhere else instead of putting down stuff you obviously cannot hope to understand.

  • I couldn't have said it better, Robbcarson. While I am certainly not one to shun or dislike metalcore, this song does have a meaning to it and if now-drunk and half dead headbangers wish to find refuge to the burning in their ears they are welcome to the calm peace that this music gives.

  • Low brow thinking has nothing to do with going or not going to University...

  • you dont need to be sad to hear this, but yea, you need to be a fucking idiot scumbag to think you must be sad to hear this.

i hope u have fun listening to daddy yankee

    hahahaha

  • Please please leave the room next time Jackospacko.

Avoid publishing comments that are an embarrassment to your ignorance. Not a geat sign of intelligence.

Your mother is probably sad because her son is oblivious to true beauty.

  • sad that a woman that has as much taste as your mom has a son like you!! that's what's really killing me

  • ahhh, this is perfect. i just love the gorgeous tones of his cello! i actually prefer julian loyd webber's version instead of yo yo ma's version....somehow it just seems much more emotional and moving here......(please dont kill me...it's just an opinion.... :])

  • i agrree completely

  • i also agree

  • Beautiful; masterfully executed.

  • wow, the dynamics are truly amazing XD

ALSO ASTERI383 - u speak of crap yourself!!!!! haha.

this is a wnderful peice, webber truly does show a LOT of emotion!

    simply amazing!

  • I love it at first 0:43 the change of daynamics amazing!

  • I love this piece - it pulls at the roots of my heart.

Love his classic music hairstyle too : )

  • E super!Concentrarea sunetului e evidenta, linia gandirii se urmareste continuu.Interpretarea piesei are putere de convingere!

  • My cello teacher was in his year at the Royal college... imagine having to deal with a talent like that...

    Wonderful rendition as well.

  • Also, JLW puts more emotion into his playing... I always found it strange that yo yo ma grins when playing even the most sentimental and emotional pieces. This recording is clearly heartfelt.

  • skorn...Yo Yo's smile comes from his love of the music and his excitement over his flawless execution thereof!

  • If you are not experiencing emotions, how can you hope to truly express them?

  • Oh, my God.......please, not another version of this cheesy piece......Julian, the man, the myth, the greatest cellist of the earth, the galaxy and the solar system itself!!!!!Why do they play this crap of a piece???

  • far superior to yo yo ma's version. i particularly like julians tone better. both are very beautiful but this is clearly better.

  • hmm---i listened to Yo Yo Ma playing this and i think i actually like this one better. Both are absolutely beautiful, of course :)

  • I'm working on this piece for my junior recital, it's so difficult!!

  • im playing it for my bass recital take that xD

  • Luvely!
