It's funny how almost every scandinavian artist speak English like Ihsahn (including myself), but when they sing in English, the words are pronounced the right way. Now insert some asshole's comment here "BAT ME CANT HEAR WAT IS SINGED IN DAT SONG." That's why you have to bother to read the awesome lyrics, though everyday metal-listener has developed the segregation for the lyrics without having to read the lyrics to understand some dexterous English.

@Dungarth Too true! It's reflected in the lyrics as well. Bands like Emperor and Borknagar have incredibly well written lyrics. The tasteful way they command their vocabulary helps create very vivid images to the reader/listener. "In the nightside eclipse" is just pure poetry and I'm yet to see anything surpass, or even come close to it.

As for why so many strings, it offers a wider range of sound. You can do more with it than a regular 6 string guitar.

The reason he is not doing anything with the lower strings is because of people like you. He has to make examples for you 6 string players. 'Guitar World' has knocked back examples of "Bet You Can't Play this" because they used all 7 strings. Notably Rusty Cooley and Chris Broderick. For me personally, as a 7 string player, I find that ridiculous.

But for this very particular riff, I don't really see the point in it.

What I really mean, is that alot of people abuse 7 string guitars. or 12 strings basses. They think that more strings = more cool. But yeah, i guess your right.

@TazMify Common misconception, Ihsahn plays an 8-string because he ses the entire range, maybe not in one riff or one song, that'd be silly on the listener.

I enjoy extended range instreuments, 7 and 8-string guitar and 6-string bass. Nothing wrong with it. Sometimes I dont use all the strings, sometimes I do...Either way my instruments allow me to do loads without carting 6 guitars around with me.

@TazMify, i have the bass version of the same idea, a sixstring and i'd say its all in the dynamics. i like its neck so im happy that i dont have to change instruments between styles. it serves both needs, low grunt and high sweetness if i need them. best bet? i dont have to veer off from standard tuning. i do have one extra passive warwick which is on full H(erm.. b?) tuning and one acoustic on standard but thats about it.

@GeneralShitt The magic word is MORE RANGE. You can only downtune a 6 string to a specific point until it starts to sound all muddy and the pickups can't pick up all the notes.

A six string pickup is only designed to handle a specific range in terms of notes.

But the problem with downtuning is that you lose also range in the higher notes, so if you instead add another string than you just get more range without losing it on the other end.

Remember, you can still play 6 string songs on a 7.
