@glenxh558 I'm sorry but you are wrong. This was a cover which was recorded in 1962. The Beatles version was recorded in 1963. "Twist and Shout" was written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns. It was originally recorded by the Top Notes in 1961.
remember that this song was recorded by a band in Brazil called Os Bruxos Again, that was more successful than the Beatles, in the '70s see OS BRUXOS AGAIN here in youtube ,,,yes,,,
@MrsMyspace00 This is also a cover btw, although the Isley Brothers changed the sound a lot and made it their own.
I Think I might have made a comment before on these lines, but these types of songs were played all over working class Liverpool as the Beatles were still lads. So I think their version was more about remembering their roots than ripping off or duplicating other brilliant versions.
Obviously Twist & Shout was souch great and wild song that the "Beatles" wanted to play it too, but first they had to ask permission to the real creators of the musical masterpiece "The Isley Brothers" . Both versions have their magic but the original is way more soulfull, on the other hand the beatles tried to emulate that emotion and they became way more famous..
this version here isn't wild, it's soulfull, but in no way is it wild, it's tame.
just like the vocals compared to lennons throat on the cover.
they played their own version, more and much harder guitar, no saxes, more bass, that#s why they're cover was such a hit and became so famous, it's simply better.
Check out Chubby Checker's version on his "All the hits by Chubby Checker", Parkway 7014 Lp. I actually heard his version before I even kknew The Isleys existed!!
Since a lot people have been comparing versions, i like the Beatles version because of its pace, and because they are covering the song which was played all over Liverpool at the time(they were fans of music as well as artists)
The Isley Brothers show more soul, and i like it a lot more than the top notes. I love the trumpets as well. The Beatles version was a tribute so it doesn't mean their needs to be competition between the versions.
This was and is the BEST version. The Beatles version lacked the power, emotion, and soul of the Isley Bros. Beatles were better at their original songs than the cover versions of other artists.
@lovecritters4 ill give that this version deffinatly has more soul, but you cant say The Beatles version didnt have power, especially with Lennon pretty much ripping his throat out singing it.
@apache2394 Sorry the power is not there! Or should I say its weak! It's like comparing an eveready battery w/a a nuclear power plant! Sorry the bros beat the bugs in this round!
@lovecritters4 Yep, but you got to admit, when someone says "Twist and Shout" they immediately think of The Beatles. I prefer the Beatles version, but I like this one just as much.
@scotplane This is so wrong. When someone says "Twist and Shout" a lot of people think Isley Brothers - especially if they're big r&b and soul fans. Jest because you and your friends were Beatlemaniacs doesn't mean everyone shares your taste. Both versions are great in there own ways. I will leave it at that.
@John1948SixB Ok, I will do one last comment. I should have put that it was my opinion only and I wasn't trying say that everyone has my taste. I'm sorry about that. When I said "When someone says Twist and Shout they immediately think of The Beatles" I wasn't meaning all people, of course there probably a lot of people who don't know the Beatles Version. By the way, I'm only thirteen, so I wasn't around during "beatlemainia", although I wish I was!
@MitchelHuis19 That's your opinion and stated the way it should be. You prefer one version or the other because of the recording not because of the race of the two groups. I like both versions a lot. My preference between them changes from time to time depending upon my mood and what else I have been listening to at the time.
@John1948SixB everyone has their own opinion and own taste of music and you think that the Isley's version is better and i think that the The Beatles's version better is
@MitchelHuis19 You posted a biggot comment. He did not call you a racist. The Beatles did a good job, but it just seems that the Isley Brothers have more soul.
@MrAndrewjs Though I'm grateful for the efforts of those who posted them, none of the uploads to YouTube do the Isley Brother's version justice, including the "live" one from sometime in the '80s. A clean recording, with plenty of bass, makes the Beatles version sound energetic, but soulless.
PS: I've noticed that record companies tend to take down the best sounding versions of the material they're trying to defend, but ignore anything that sounds "re-recorded".
@Supernaturalalisa i like both versions they both got thier own qualitys like isley bors. version has that dowop soul sound and the beatles has that british rock sound
Thank you for posting this! There are those among us who actually thought the Beatles' version was the only one. And even though it was good, this is the VERY BEST in my humble opinion!!!!! Who doesn't get up and dance to this?
@88mroux The Isley brothers didn't come up with this song first, the Top Notes did. If you listen the one by the Top Notes, you'll find that it's a lot less "polished" sounding than this one. But I agree with you, this version is the best out of all of them.
@KevinDoubrawa Twist and Shout was originally recorded by the Top Notes in 1961, covered by The Isley Brothers in 1962 and then covered by The Beatles in 1964.
Shout was originally written and recorded by The Isley Brothers. Released in 1959. It was covered by Joey Dee and the Starlighters in 1962, the Isley Brothers' version re-charted that same year at #94. British pop singer Lulu had a UK hit with the song in 1964. I don't think Shout was ever covered by the Beatles.
@John1948SixB They used to play it live, including on a video I once rented called "The Beatles Live!" which was a performance on a show called "Ready Steady Go!" Each of the Beatles took turns singing lead vocals. Search for "Shout - The Beatles" and you can watch the video.
@musicaboutnothing OK That agrees with the info I have. They never released a recording of it but did perform it in some of their live appearances. Thanks for responding.
I like both versions....

@MitchelHuis19 That's your opinion and stated the way it should be. You prefer one version or the other because of the recording not because of the race of the two groups. I like both versions a lot. My preference between them changes from time to time depending upon my mood and what else I have been listening to at the time.

@John1948SixB everyone has their own opinion and own taste of music and you think that the Isley's version is better and i think that the The Beatles's version better is
=D Peace

@MitchelHuis19 But that gives that guy no reason to be a biggot.

@MitchelHuis19 You posted a biggot comment. He did not call you a racist. The Beatles did a good job, but it just seems that the Isley Brothers have more soul.

@John1948SixB Agreed

@Supernaturalalisa
personally this version lacks passion....It only sounds at it's best when it's being SCREAMED by lennon.
MrAndrewjs 1 year ago
@MrAndrewjs Though I'm grateful for the efforts of those who posted them, none of the uploads to YouTube do the Isley Brother's version justice, including the "live" one from sometime in the '80s. A clean recording, with plenty of bass, makes the Beatles version sound energetic, but soulless.
PS: I've noticed that record companies tend to take down the best sounding versions of the material they're trying to defend, but ignore anything that sounds "re-recorded".

@Supernaturalalisa It was more a tribute than a rip off, even chuck berry respected the beatles cmon.

Love the Beatles version, but this is THE one!
This has just the right swing and grease that the Beatles couldn't give it. The Beatles version is fun, The Isley Bros. slides you across the floor!

i prefer the beatles version

Thank you for posting this! There are those among us who actually thought the Beatles' version was the only one. And even though it was good, this is the VERY BEST in my humble opinion!!!!! Who doesn't get up and dance to this?

I like this version better than the beatles version, because they came up with the song first
88mroux 1 year ago
@88mroux The top notes came up with the song first
14csm14 1 year ago
@88mroux The Isley brothers didn't come up with this song first, the Top Notes did. If you listen the one by the Top Notes, you'll find that it's a lot less "polished" sounding than this one. But I agree with you, this version is the best out of all of them.

Beatles cover this song because this song was in the year 1954-55 and beatles in 1959 or was it shout...
KevinDoubrawa 1 year ago
@KevinDoubrawa Twist and Shout was originally recorded by the Top Notes in 1961, covered by The Isley Brothers in 1962 and then covered by The Beatles in 1964.
Shout was originally written and recorded by The Isley Brothers. Released in 1959. It was covered by Joey Dee and the Starlighters in 1962, the Isley Brothers' version re-charted that same year at #94. British pop singer Lulu had a UK hit with the song in 1964. I don't think Shout was ever covered by the Beatles.
John1948SixB 1 year ago
@John1948SixB I think The Beatles performed Shout live, but never recorded it...so it would go to your definition of what a cover is...

@GatewayGhettoProd
It was recorded, and put on there first album, 'please please me' as the ending track (1963)

@John1948SixB The Beatles actually did cover Shout.
musicaboutnothing 1 year ago
@musicaboutnothing What year was it? Was it a single or on an LP? I have never seen it on a discography.
John1948SixB 1 year ago
@John1948SixB They used to play it live, including on a video I once rented called "The Beatles Live!" which was a performance on a show called "Ready Steady Go!" Each of the Beatles took turns singing lead vocals. Search for "Shout - The Beatles" and you can watch the video.

@musicaboutnothing OK That agrees with the info I have. They never released a recording of it but did perform it in some of their live appearances. Thanks for responding.
John1948SixB 1 year ago
@John1948SixB I just realized that the Beatles' cover of "Shout" is also on Disc 2 of The Beatles Anthology 1.
