All these "American Idol" singers can't compare to Karen Carpenter. She was truly unique. A lot of people comment on how great a lower register she had, but she also had an outstanding high register. Check out "Want You Back In My Life Again" and "Love Is Surrender" and you will know what I mean.
I listen to songs of today's era and they are of a different quality of that of the 70's, i am not sure if it is that they remind us of our youth, but they have a warm fuzzy feel to them.... Karen be happy and sing forever in our hearts.
I love hearing these old songs, though in a way it's a bit sad, as it brings back memories of my little sister (now deceased) and I playing around the house in the summer as kids in the 70's.
wow its been a while since i heard this song.. my mother always sings this before when she is still young. i remember my childhood.. tnx to this song !
Cool! In this Quadraphonic version, it seems like the Wurlitzer piano is more audiable that the Stereophonic version. In the Stereophonic version the Wurlitzer seemed to be more muted. Or is it just me?
@gacj2010 Yeah, he really wanted to kill his sister. They both had controlling personalities. Karen would hound & interfere anytime Richard attempted a relationship. Richard was the Rodney Dangerfield of the Carpenters. He chose, arranged, and produced (& sometimes wrote music) songs that he knew would fit Karen's voice. My only complaint with Richard was getting her out from behind the drums - I think that was her identity/security.
This song is one of the 12 or so that I am going to put on my "Wedding CD"... and of course "We've Only Just Begun.." too.. but "Only Yesterday" is by far my anthem...
@gant555 Actually, I was trying to convey the thought that once more I can listen to KC, like I did yesterday. It was intended to to be a reference to the other song. No intent to argue about it.
this song says it all for me ,i have a lovely wife who is my world ,when i look at her and listen to this i am reborn we have been married 23 yrs ,had all the crapp in life ,but we are still one mgreat songs
Serious question, Motownboy. I am very impressed with the quality. Is this that I am listening to better than downloading it from itunes, or better than what I would get from a CD? or is it the other way round? I have a decent hifi and I am convinced that vinyl gives better quality than CD. I havent felt tempted at all towards itunes, because i think it just devalues music to junk status. Buy it, listen twice, chuck it away.
Great version of this wonderful song, never heard this take before. I can hear so many changes to this in the back end (from about 3 min mark) & a lighter drum beat.
You're absolutely right about her reading of that line. Especially the word "through." Her intonation is very different. Thanks for this most excellent sound quality!
Quadraphonic? That's way back. That was a great video of a young & very pretty Karen Carpenter. What a talent and they did benefit from employing good material!
Playing this CD-4 record as stereo loses the quad effect. The rear channels fold into the front ones, and it sounds much like a conventional stereo record. The best way to present it would be to play it through a CD-4 demodulator, and use a QS or SQ encoder to matrix-encode the original four channels so they could be recovered by playing this video through a Dolby Pro-Logic II decoder. Dolby PL II can decode QS perfectly. SQ would be close, but rear channels ambiguous.
@beeb1421 i have listening this on my crappy compaq laptop spekaers, my sony 5.1 surround system, and my 2.1 (x4) and they are all amazing. i know how you feel!
Funny how Karen and Patsy Cline died very young, yet we listen to their music over and over again all these years later. Time stands still for these artists!!!!
Karen Carpenter had one of the most beautiful voices in all music. Losing her was tragic. I hope the recordings will keep her with us forever. This one is brilliant.
Ignore the tech nuts, this sounds wonderful in my studio. One of the greatest pop vocalists of all time. What a shame she passed on so early in her life.
sometimes it's only hindsight but she has one of the clearest most beautiful voices of the twentieth century; whether it was a 4"speaker in a tinny car radio or an elaborate quad system.thanks for posting! an aural orgasm. Can you do 'GooDBYE TO LoVE'?
I LOVE the album cut of this song - right before the fade-out when Richard's voice track comes in with this note of really cool harmony I always get goosebumps. You do brilliant work - thanks so much!
Well, if you recorded this off the LP straight (i.e. no CD-4 demodulation (or SQ or QS decoding in the other albums) then the quadraphonics will indeed be lost, and all you're left with is the extremely centered lead vocals and the extremely widely separated left-and-right compared to the narrowly separated original mixes.
And, of course, since the Carpenters promo clips (they didn't call them music videos yet) were lip syncs, the other mixes will lock up. Originally, all mono AM radio mixes.
@tja2729 I was under the impression that vinyl records used matrix surround instead of discrete quad channel. If that is true the decoder in the stereo would decode the quad effect similar to the way Dolby surround does (not digital but the older analog or pro logic) VHS tape also has surround sound with only stereo left and right channels. a surround effect is created added on the recording and your stereo decodes it on playback with only 2 channels on the tape. SQ quad vinyl worked similar
I loved this album and still have the original vinyl in its unusual envelope-like sleeve.
We had a quadraphonic set up at home when I was growing up - a great rarity here in New Zealand. I still have the Carpenters "Now and Then" album in quadraphonic, if you would like a contribution towards your HQ remastering cause.
@disastertom At the very least. Honestly, I can't think of anyone I'd rate higher, but of course I admit there is a subjective factor. What sets her apart are that extremely rounded, soothing quality to her contralto, as well as the deep conviction and sincerity that comes through the microphone, and those telltale subtle emotional cracks from time to time. To me, the closest to her is Astrud Gilberto. The sopranos, or course, are a separate category with different standards.
yes you can hear the dub over in the quad mix, a very good version. Have never seen this vid at all and being a lover of all of Karen's songs I felt such sadness for our loss of this fantastic singer, many thanks for posting this vid. Cheers
Karen's renditions was a profound time marker in our lives. I am sure I am not alone if I were to exclaim God! I love this woman. Thanks for sharing. God bless.
oh, and it's nice to have an actual video for this song, before mtv or anything like that existed. And sometimes on youtube, people will show videos of karen singing but her voice is edited out and the audio is replaced with a completely different song than the song she is singing in the video. it looks really weird.
this is great. I *thought* there was a longer version of this song, and here it is. most times I hear this song, the ending seems to get cut off too soon and i find myself wanting to hear more, and it's annoying! I wonder which is the original version, the shorter one or this longer one?
@MrJonk1969 ...I have always felt that if they hadn't edited the song for single release and kept the album length it would not have stopped at #4, and would have hit #1.
This is INCREDIBLE !! The sound is just fantastic. Its like having Karen Carpenter in the same room , alive again, and splendid and wonderful !! Thanks so much !
I like this version better than the original. I find the drums on the original annoying, but now it's toned down. And you can hear more of the backing orchestra. Heaven!! I wish they would bring it out on cd. Thanks for this.
Thanks for reminding me that next to "Superstar," THIS is my favorite Carpenters song. My favorite part is the guitar part at :52 and later when the castanets are played. My understanding is that the album was recorded with 24-track recording technology and every instrument has its own mic. This created a "wall of sound" with each instrument clearly recognizable. I've always like how the lyrics start off dark and sombre and by the end of the song, you're caught up in the brightness of it/
Incredible! You really have a great ear to hear those tiny variations from the original. You're absolutely correct, though. Another great job. Thanks for putting in the work to share this with us!
I made no reference to a difference in length. The "alternate take" refers to the lines "the pain I was going through, and waiting was all my heart could do." For example, you can hear the difference in the inhale breath that Karen takes between the words "through" and "and", plus she gives a bit more inflection on the words pain and waiting in the quad version.
@daniel1982spain Yeah, it's not about the length. Listen to your CD, and then listen to this version. There's a totally different inflection on the word "through" in the first verse. They obviously cleaned it up a bit for the album release.
happy birthday sweet karen mar. 2, 1950. you voice is unforgetable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking this is the exact same track from the album, not a different take. You can just hear the nuances better. maybe I'm wrong...

@daniel1982spain Yeah, it's not about the length. Listen to your CD, and then listen to this version. There's a totally different inflection on the word "through" in the first verse. They obviously cleaned it up a bit for the album release.
