Don't blame Peter one bit for being pissed at the rest of the band for not understanding the situation with his newborn child. He had every right to be imo. You would have to be a TOTAL SCUMBAG to not be there for your wife and child in that situation! Can't believe at the time the other guys didn't get that.
@SuperStrik9 The rot had already set in by that point though. He had already alienated himself from the group. By the time of recording "The Lamb..." he was working in a separate room from everyone else. Conflict between him and the others had grown to such epic proportions that Steve ended up putting himself in hospital. Had they all been on good terms when Anna-Marie was born chances are it would have been different.
@Burbridge92 Doesn't change one bit that Peter had the right to think/feel the others were in the wrong. If say a co-worker's wife was pregnant in the same situation, noone should have the right to hold any change in the company over the fellow employee's head. It's insensitive at best to hold the company's lack of progress on one individual's totally reasonable situation imo.
@SuperStrik9 I'm not defending their actions, even they themselves aren't doing that. Of course Peter had the right to feel that way. The thing is they literallly weren't functioning as a single unit at that point. There were serious feelings of mistrust, chances are they didn't believe what Peter was telling them. They've acknowledged since then that they were wrong but in the context of the situation at the time they didn't believe him, or feel that they had reason to.
@SuperStrik9 Phil was in a relationship with a woman who had a baby at the time Joely who he would adopt as his child so he had some sympathy to Peter. Tony, Mike and Steve didn't have kids at the time and Mike would not be married until 1976 and he and Tony would not have kids until 1977/78. If Phil had picked up Steve while driving to Trident Studios during the Seconds Out mixing he would have persuaded Steve to stay. (watch the interview for And Then There Were Three DVD).
@tjrrockandrollmaster We are all such Genesis nerds lol. Debating about the understanding of childbirth between bandmembers lol! If they weren't such an awesome band I'd say it's almost sad lol. For me the band wasn't quite the same when Peter and then Steve left. They were still a good band and I like everything up to and including Duke. That said Genesis best work was during the Gabriel era imo.
@SuperStrik9 Wasn't quite the same when Peter and Steve left ? That's the understatement of the century. They turned into a cross between the Bee Gees and The Wurzels. The 3 man era was Genesis in name only. The became an absolute embarrassment to the older fans. I can't dance... my arse !
I remember picking up the Melody Maker that week and saw the headline: "Gabriel Quits Genesis" - I was absolutely devastated. I couldn't believe it and didn't want to believe it. To the vast majority of Genesis fans at that time, Peter Gabriel WAS Genesis. Younger fans who discovered Genesis much later don't seem to realise this. Peter Gabriel was like God to the hardcore Genesis fans back then. Gabriel leaving was, as Gail Coulson said, like The Rolling Stones losing Mick Jagger.
@ThefightingCelt You're right, but that shows what a skewed view people had of Genesis back then. They didn't realise that the others contributed to the creation of the work as much as Peter did. It seems to be the way with the vocalists in Genesis, similar hype surrounded Phil's departure, and yet Anthony and Steve were both collossal forces within the band (perhaps best demonstrated by the biggest change in musical direction in the band's history following Steve's departure).
@Burbridge92 Wrong ! It was a far from skewed view - to say that is patronizing. We held Banks, Collins, Hackett and Rutherford in high regard too. The point was that we held Gabriel ( the band's focal, as well as vocal star ) in higher regard. I saw them live then and I saw the first concerts they did in 76 with Collins at the helm. I liked Phil but he did not have the stage presence or charisma of Gabriel. In fact, I distinctly remember the huge amount of calls for Peter during the concerts.
@ThefightingCelt The fact that you deem my remark to be patronizing doesn't change the fact that it's true. In terms of musicianship Peter offered no more than anyone else, so higher regard for Peter on a musical level was unjustified. This is not about charisma or theatrics, and the band have never said it was. They felt agrieved that some of the fans genuinely believed Peter was the creative force, and the simple fact is: he wasn't.
@Burbridge92 I never suggested Peter's fan worship was born from a solely musical perspective. I don't know you but I would guess you became a fan much later than me. Peter WAS ( trust me ! ) the fans' favourite member of Genesis by some distance back then.Tony Banks says he thought it was the end of Genesis when Peter Gabriel left, hence why he pleaded with him to stay. Ask yourself why Tony Banks would feel such strong doubts ( at that time ) over Genesis's future after Gabriel's departure.
@ForceMaximus84 The first song is ''Dusk'' from the ''Trespass'' album, the second and third are from the ''Lamb Lies Down On Broadway'' album: the title-track and ''Back In NYC''.
@ForceMaximus84 The second song @ 2:33 is the in-your-face, pre-punk, powerful tune entitled "Back In NYC" off their 1974 release "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway".
@ForceMaximus8401:50 is "Dusk", which is track 5 on "Trespass", 02:33 is "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", track 1 on the first disc from the album of the same name.

A person I work with once asked me, 'what are your priorities?' and I thought about this dilemma of Peter's! She was in the right ballpark - family vs work - but in my case it wasn't so bad that a child's life hung in the balance.
No one can beat the awesomeness that is.......PETER GABRIEL

This is great! I didn't know there was a VH1 behind the music on the group. It really lets you see where the "genesis" mojo comes from. Love it!

It's kind of a shame this video fails to mention Chester Thompson and Darryl Struemer as Genesis' touring drummer and guitarist
