It looks like your genesis glitched up. that has a tendancy to happen every now and then, same goes for other geme consols too. My genesis started doing the sme kind of thing, freezing or getting totally messed up, so often it was bearly usable any more. I couldnt even play the thing anymore. :(

I think when I owned the original cartridge for my MD, I could actually move through the level. I think I need to do more experimenting with this glitch...
with the debug mode. you have to play the gumball stage, turn to super sonic, lose a life, then exit with start+A. then, you have to do the steps shown in my other video, chosing Special Stage 2 instead of 1. And here we go. This will screw up the game a bit more, and allows you to do this. I don't know why the extra step of the gumball stage acts in this way, but it seems to remove the canvas limit to the right, placing you on a random position.
My favorite is still the double-death bug in Sonic 1, Sonic 2 water levels that, when combined with intended arithmetic undeflow, gives you 255 lives...... wonder if it works in Sonic CD though. :P
@nineko No, it's up,up,down,down,up,up,up,up,up,up,up,up. Everyone has it wrong for some reason, and I'm surprised someone who knows so much about the technical details of Sonic games would have it wrong too.
@flarn2006 Some other experienced hackers (such as LOst, see thread 3055 on the Sonic Retro Forum for example, but there are other ones) confirmed that it works with 4 UPs. If you believe you know more than a whole community dedicated to Sonic Games, be my guest.

Yeah, other people said that mashing the UP button helped them enter the code, even if it's proven (through hacking and other techniques) that only 4 are really needed. Your observation was perfectly legit, I just didn't like your attitude. It's hard that every other website on the internet is wrong and only you are right (even though it can happen, yes).
