thanks for posting this... I have a 80 GB and running out of space. Is it ok to use just regular external hard drive as you would use for laptop or pc/mac instead of USB flash drive?
HEy man im really gonna do this but can you give me the website where you got the hard drive from because im not sure which one to buy there are a lot of websites and i need the one you got it from
@pat77rock I bought the hard-drive in a store here in Taiwan. Don't worry too much about the brand, just buy a 320GB 2.5" Internal SATA Hard Drive, 5400 RPM, 8MB Buffer.
so ive been searching forums and watching videos and everyone tells me specifically to get a philips head screwdriver yet, they dont give me the specific one to get(ironic isnt it)... so which one am i suspose to get?
im sorry but is their a specific hard drive i need to look for? or can i just pick up hard drive? my ps3 has been broken for 3 months and now i feel i have the courage to do it myself instead of going to anyone else.
my new HD is in it asks for up date data of virsion 3.55 which i downloaded on to a usb flashdrive and inserted it into the ps3 usb port but it keeps comeing up with no applicable update was found do you no why this is
@kingbobkingbob12345 I don't know why that happened. My suggestion would be to use a HDD with nothing on it for that update. Try DLing it again to a different blank USB drive.
@2riskybaby I would guess that you'd be able to find that particular firmware online - DL it and install it as you switch hard drives, then don't connect to the internet anymore - if you are trying to hack the system, I gotta say, it's probably not worth is since you can't play online, use trophies, get patches or anything else.
@AlexanderArts i have 2 ps3's one is 3.50 for online games and the other is 3.41 and already hacked..im just wondering if i can downgrade my 3.50 version to 3.41 with this guide..i save a lot and play downloaded games, most of rpg games dont need to connect online..thanks for the info man
BACKUP WILL NOT backup PSONE, PS2 and MINI game save data ! Most PS3 games save data will be fine. Before you start best off deleting as much as you can if you have good download speed, all old demos and any games you can download later. TIP: PS3 hard-drive screws ARE soft metal - push down firmly with a well-fitting screwdriver. Don't overtighten with new drive. No advantage with 7200RPM. SATA only, Bigger than 640GB might be slower transfer - compare specs. 1TB will fit, but from top only.
@jimmicreesti For 1TB in PHAT verson only you need to enter from top, removing the plastic cover. 1TB and 740GB drives are 12.5mm high and will not enter from side only 9.5mm high drives will fit from side - most memory 9.5mm drive is 640GB eg. Western Digital WD6400BPVT (AdvancedFormat - no speed advantage in PS3) or WD6400BEVT.
thank you so much for this vid. I also have the 40 gb model and My HDD comes out the same way yours does. I tried to upgrade mine once but, it didnt work because I didnt know that you were suppose to put the latest firmware on a flash drive in order for it to work. I just assumed it would automatically format the HDD like it does in the videos I've seen on Youtube. One quick Question, did you have to format the External drive? if so, what software did you use and is it Windows 7 compatible?
@burnout623 ... why would you want to put the old one back? Well if you put it back blank you could start over, and if you left the data you could keep it as a back up of your current data. Both should be fine for different purposes. You shouldn't really need to do either though.
@AlexanderArts I just want to test my hard drive that is "broken"; I think it still works So if it does I will use it. But if it really is broken then I want to put the old one back.
@mbyw You can surely switch it, however, it may or may not work depending on WHY the PS3 got the yellow light. I suggest you research it some more, I never had it happen to me so I am not an expert on that subject.
I just want to ask what hard drive did you used is it (250GB 2.5" External USB Hard Drive) or ( 320GB 2.5" Internal SATA Hard Drive, 5400 RPM, 8MB Buffer) because i'm a little bit confused which one to use myself can you tell me please. :)
Yow, Thanks dude, i getting soon new hardware and my save deta and my tropies and some else will be still there, if i can't play TEKKEN 5 DARK RESSURACTION, so i need go to PSN Profile and ps3 system and it's all there...
where did u get that fuking clean ass white ps3? that shit looks good..
my 40gb hdd drive comes out like yours did, i had a 60gb hdd from a previous ps3 i had and it pulled out with the little flap pull backwards then pullout .. i tried to replace the drives but the ps3 wouldnt do shit with the 60gb .. any help ?
The white PS3 is sold only in Japan and Asia I think, I am living in Taiwan now so I got it here. The PS3 you had might not accept the 60gb drive if it had data from the other model of PS3, if you wiped it blank you might be able to use it. That's just a guess though. If you want to buy a new drive I'd suggest something over 100GB at least.
i went today and bought a 250gb hdd and gonna try that when i get home.. do u think u can buy thewhite ps3 shell somehwre and just change the guts .. id be interested in that
I don't think you can just buy the outside but maybe you could buy a broken PS3 or something and just take the shell off it, that would be cool. They also sell Silver ones that look pretty cool.
when u upgraded hdd did u get any problems like no applicable update was found, connect storage media that contains update data of version 3.15 or later , then press start and select at the same time?
ok so my ps3 got the "YLOD" (40GB) and i wanna take out the HDD to the ps3 slim imma get soon, will any thing happen if i just take out the new HDD and put in my old HDD without turning the ps3 slim on?
Well honestly, as you can see in the video there isn't anything at all difficult or confusing about it. Just put the new drive in, then hit yes a bunch of times and put in a couple passwords. If you forgot yours, I don't know what to tell you, it's probably one of you 'standard' ones.
You mean the password of my PSN account ? Yeah I forgot the 1st one, then I had to make a new one, so I know it! What im worried about is, will this overheat the system, since it might be not compatible ?!
I have the 80GB and I want to upgrade! But when I went to buy the HDD and all these stuff, the worker there told me, that if you get a HDD like 320GB or 500GB, your system will over heat, and the mother board might break! Is this true ? I was afraid that that would happen, so I didnt!
I think they are REALLY talking about the speed of the drive. PS3 normally has a 5400rpm speed drive. Now most 320 and 500GB drives seem to run at 7200, so that could make it overheat. The drive I found was 320GB but only runs at 5400 so it shouldn't get too hot. I was going to talk about that in the video but it's already too long, haha!
Awesome video!! I plan to upgrade my PS3 soon. I only have 25GB left on it. It should be good for another year. But seeing as how I have extra money now, I best upgrade it now. A year from now I may not have the extra money.
Yeah, I was surprised to see some of the issues that came up. Needing the firmware, connecting to the internet, trophy synching, and the account activation stuff...
