Wow, when he was pulling the fingers out of the mold@ 2;11, it looked like his willy with a fingernail! I was watching t.v. and then glanced down. That was weird! LOL!
I can't believe how real and life like the piece looks! I only have one critique. When we are pregnant the stomach sags down more when you stand up! The model must have been lying down to pose for photos or life pose! I do however love this mans work! It is fantastic! I also love that you made it , larger than life. Bravo!
at least this one in particular, seems too idealized to be called "the most realistic"...like if a woman is going to be pregnant, this is how you want her to look like: no real blemishes, no stretch marks, no saggy skin, no fat, no wrinkles...just perfection. i know its easy to find beauty in the idealized form, but for me i try to find beauty in normal everyday reality.
@etheangel2220 I don't think that all women have fat stretchmarked saggy skin when pregnant. There were other signs of imperfection on this piece in the form of moles and acne blemishes. She has an exhausted appeal as well. If the things you mention are what marked your reality, that's fine. Just note that your reality is not everyone's.
And really, you nitpicking this AMAZING work is ridiculous.
it seems you havent had a chance to experience this whole pregnancy thing. its not just my reality, but everyone elses as well. trust me, you will never find a REAL pregnant woman that looks anything close to this perfect form, therefore this is not realistic. rather its a man's idealized interpretation of a pregnant woman. of course its great, but i dont like when artwork doesnt seem to reflect what its supposed to, especially when it comes to what is "realistic"
Comparing the swaddled baby sculpture to a rich and famous baby is classist and misanthropic to the degree it ignores poor and unimportant babies, many of whom were swaddled historically and globally. Jesus was considered to have been born in a manger (a trough). One might instead call this the baby of ancient humanity, the humble beginning of a great and fearful species.
At 2:43 the narrator says that the mold was completely filled but at 4:48 she has no bottoms too her feet so it looks like she is hollow otherwise she would be heavy so was a part of the vid skipped? did you use rotational casting?

i wish the video would have shown how they did the bulk of the hair for this sculpture. But, eitherway, this is is the most realistic sculpture I have ever seen. Gotta love his/their attention to detail.
try putting a baby inside the pregnant female.. and with help of light, you could slightly see the baby inside ^^ it would create more interest in ppl
i far as i can remember the mother and the wrapped baby were made in response to Mueck being a resident artist at the National Gallery, so alot of the genesis for the work came from classical painting with heavy religious overtones, thats probably why the narrator makes these comparisons. Great video, brilliant artist. Thanks for posting, haven't seen this in a while.
how do you inevitably compare a baby to christ? you could say that about any baby in art. The narrator keeps comparing Mueck's work to christian idols. And I don't see it. I think they're trying too hard to make that comparison.
