  • when i have a baby ima make my baby listen to the smiths XP

  • Rourke's bass in this song is the best work of his, is hypnotizing and beautiful. THE SMITHS is one of the best bands EVER.

  • thegoodteacher(dot)com

  • before I get killed////alright...good song...YET the "Wedding Present's" cover off of the Please Please Please (Smiths Tribute ) LP is better

  • Most romantic song ever. But I prefer the Hatful of Hollow Version

  • This is for my lover..... I only can tell him that:

"hand in glove I stake my claim

I'll fight to the last breath

If they dare touch a hair on your head

I'll fight to the last breath

For the Good Life is out there somewhere

So stay on my arm, you little charmer"

If God want, he knows how we will make it real.

  • The Smiths were so unique in the history of rock!

  • Listening on Christmas day :-)

  • Saw this live in 85... those were the days!

  • "and if the people stare, then the people stare"..."I really don't know and I really don't care". Morrissey had a way of taking simple phrases and giving them a life of their own.

  • Before 'Born this way' there was 'Hand in glove'... Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care...

  • An all time classic rock song for sure. Reminds me alot of Joy Division. Great ambience, rhythm and jangly guitars :D

  • I mean, who else can think of 'The sun shines out of our behinds' for a song lyric?

  • @RJFSHADOWSMUSIC

It's not the fact that he thought of it, it's the fact that only Morrissey could sing it in such a way that it doesn't sound like absolute arse.

  • I am new to The Smiths. "How soon is now" got my attention, but this song has me hooked forever.

  • i loveeee the smiths!

  • one of the best love songs ever written!!!

  • 7 People should put their 'HAND IN' their ass for disliking this.

  • noel gallagher's favorite song

  • its about gloves

  • This song is about being openly gay and showing no concern for what others may think.

  • chickenboby, you'll get the last laugh when in 25 years nobody knows who sang all the shit music that is now popular with your generation. but the Smiths are immortal.

  • "The sun shines from our behinds." Really? Well, the wind blows from mine...

  • p4k

  • ive been listening to the smiths since 1989 and i still get chills when i hear a song of theirs

  • great song

  • im 12 and people sometimes in my school make fun of me because i don't listen to the same music they do but i don't care because i know im not the only one who listens to pink floyd, the smiths, the Jacobites and stuff i better thank my brothers for showing me true music.

  • hermosa letra, hermosa melodía, este tema no tiene desperdicio! <3

  • Maybe this song is about morrissey's homosexuality ;p

  • This has got to be my favorite Smiths songs. The message is so clear. Love who you want and screw what anyone else thinks. Morrissey is an effing GOD. The Smiths were the greatest thing tyo ever happen to music. Thanks to anyone who's ever posted a Smiths/Morrissey video on youtube.

    "there's no shame..."

  • @maladjusted66 This is the Smith's fav song too - both Morrisey and Mars think so/read in interview...So f'n what his sexual orientation Morrisey has(from lyrics seems Bi)- I am straight and I love the Smiths!!!!

  • Leave it to Morrissey to write a song about anal sex so slyly. He wrote some of the most amazing lyrics in the history of music.

  • the bass line in this song gets me everytime!!! it is genius

  • after all these years and I'm still taken with them...it's still the same feeling when I listen...

  • I'm so proud to be named after Morrissey! :D

  • I just knew this was a great album from the cover shot of Joey Delasandro.

  • Excellent song, band, and album cover. Joe Dellasandro!!!

  • @smithsfan92.

    apologies....

    big mouth strikes again :-(

  • @smithsfan92,,,"smith is a good singer"

    who is smith?

at least learn a bands line up if your going to call yourself a fan

  • @swarmmaster ...true

  • FUCKING INSANE I LOVE ITI CAN DANCE TO THIS FOREVER

  • the smiths show us how human we all really are

  • omg i used to listen to this song with my mom all the time before she passed ! !

....this song makes me so happy....

    (thank you mom for everything)

  • @Cobainfan4ever This is a beautiful post :) Thanks for sharing!

  • OH GOD. WHERE DID THIS VERSION COME FROM.

I love this. I love this. Oh my god, I love this so much.

  • @xxZeroZonexx It's from the self titled debut album 'The Smiths'

  • @smithsfan92 Smith is good singer

  • @xxZeroZonexx you can also check out 'UV pop - Serious', It's the same kind of song, but less known.

I remember my dad listening to this when i was young.

  • @xxZeroZonexx durh!

  • @MrMonsterstiffy durhurhur

  • @xxZeroZonexx lol.

  • so stay on my arm,you little charmer.

anyone else like the sandi shaw cover with the smiths as backing band

  • @pfg333 I really think Shaw added a whole other feel to the song. If it weren't Marr/Rourke/Joyce backing her, it wouldn't have been as good.

  • i love this song!!!!!

  • prefer this to the hatful of hollow version

  • my radio station 1019 rxp played hand in glove yesterday at 4:22 am in the morning

  • This is one of my favorite songs ever

  • Does anyone have a link to the 7 inch version? I haven't found one yet.

  • Morrissey is GOD!!. Forget about religion i believe in music.

  • @jakehannaby101 Jeez, I hope GOD is a little happier than this guy!

  • Respond to this video... "the sun shines out of our behinds"....brilliant!

  • Oh yes Smiths fan92 you are such a renegade. If only every one could be so clever as to reject the 'social culture' of their generation. That would certainly make for a vibrant society, what with every person sat in their bedrooms writing pretentious messages on Smiths videos.

  • @thevillan53 i want to refresh my page and re-like your comment again and again, it's so brilliant.

  • @thevillan53 So eloquently put. It sounds like something Morrissey would say. Wait...are you Morrissey? o.O

  • @thevillan53 wanker attitude. get over it.

  • Defo in my top 5 favourite Smiths songs, no doubt about it.

  • Just listen to that bass... i played the same bass line for an hour and a half, its so amazing... the song all together is majestic. Im a metal head, but who couldnt listen to this!!!

  • @bus10ful yah andy rourke is a greatly under appreciated bassist. check out igJjX29U7g4 its one of my fav basslines from him

  • this song is about gay rights and acceptance right?

  • 5 people have chapped hands. Because they're wankers.

  • this song he's talking about showing affection with his gay lover in public. it all depends on how near his gay lover stands next to him, but when they have there hand in the glove they really don't know and really don't care.

  • hand in glove, we can go wherever we please and everything depends upon how near you stand to me and if the people stare then the people stare oh i really dont know and i really dont care! - awesome lyrics!

  • 1:24 the sun shines out of our behinds ? :D

  • @joskeeeee indeed.

  • Amazing track, one the bands best. I saw them do this in 1986 in Salfird. Brilliant.

  • I think the development of a unique culture requires some isolation, and since everyone and everything is linked now there is only homogenization, a culture of consumption that constantly cannibalizes itself while commodifying humanity.

That's why I don't get too into The New, I figure if it's that great I'll find it in due time. Not much of what is new frankly impresses me, all tech and no soul.

  • 5 PEOPLE NEED TO KISS MY SHADES!

  • And Everthing depends on near you stand to me : )

  • im a foetus and i love the smiths, i think new music is gay and shit and i look down at everyone else

  • @sonicreducer1990 How ironic you presented your statement like that and like the Smiths.

  • Quite why people prefer modern-day popstars to this I shall never know...

Intellectualism in many senses is dying out in popular culture.

  • @GGiblet

I'm pretty sure that the lyric is 'There's no shame oh no' which makes sense with 'Though we may be hidden by rags/ We'vesomething they'll never have'

  • Johnny Marr, wow

  • Misheard lyrics: "Ohh it's not like any other blog, this one is different because it sucks" :D

I like this song though. :3

  • Can someone tell me what the lyrics are about ? My English is not so good ...

    Thanks

  • @riotribunal

Has no one replied to you?

It is a song about someone who has very little money, but knows he is an intelligent person and has worth, though he may be dressed in rags

He is in love. He fears he may lose the one he loves.

I will write the lyrics out for you. It may take a couple of times to add them as there is a letter limit on youtube. Hope this helps you!

Oh, the title is from a book, Hand in Glove by Ngaio Marsh. Morrissey reads and puts literary allusions into songs. Be happy

  • @riotribunal So hand in glove I stake my claim I'll fight to the last breath If they dare touch a hair on your head I'll fight to the last breath The good life is out there somewhere so stay on my arm, you little charmer But I know my luck too well yes, I know my luck too well and I'll probably never see you again I'll probably never see you again I'll probably never see you again
  • @riotribunal And if the people stare then, the people stare oh I really don't know and I really don't care Hand in glove the Good People laugh Yes, we may be hidden by "rags" but we have something they'll never have Hand in glove the sun shines out of our behinds Yes, we may be hidden by "rags" but we have something they'll never have And if the people stare then, the people stare oh I really don't know and I really don't care
  • @riotribunal

    Hand in glove

the sun shines out of our behinds

No it's NOT like any other love

    this one's different

    because it's us!

    Hand in glove

we can go wherever we please

    and everything depends upon

how near you stand to me

  • @riotribunal

One more thing I forgot to add---the mumbled lyric in the song is "kiss my shades, oh oh oh" it's sort of funny but I left it out and didn't want you to wonder what he was saying

Hope this is helpful to you! :)

  • The Smiths will live on forever!

  • Louder Than Bombs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love this song!!

  • Awesomee.

  • @smithsfan92 cheer up your miserable cunt, big deal you dont want to embrace yourself in modern culture listening to the smiths isn't going to do fuck all, go on walk alone right of a fucking cliff. johnny marr is god.

  • @oasissupernova96 Fuck off you wanker... You're the one who sounds like the miserable cunt. He has good reason not to embrace modern culture.... Because it's fucking SHITE

  • If anyone wants a hand in glove guitar backing track for free download there's one here on soundcloud . com/sazz/handinglove (delete the spaces in the link for it to work) :)

  • allways found these early songs more personnal to me, maybe cause morrissey was questioning his sexuality

  • ugh this gives me shivers

  • Absolutely love the Smiths. It's good to know that other young adults/teens love them as well. This is REAL music! No mention of Shorty in da' club. This is where it's at!

  • Love that: If they dare touch a hair on your head

I'll fight to the last breath

For the Good Life is out there somewhere

So stay on my arm, you little charmer

  • great song

  • i'll probably nvr c u againnnnnnnnnnnn!!

  • The Smiths have brought me to life, yet they have killed me. Love em.

  • @chermione33 Very deep Chermione33, and I think they did a bit of that to me 25 years ago! Everything's rosey now though - like everything with The Smiths, it was deep emotion, but with tongue in cheek giggles. Never been repeated by any band.

  • I I implore all young people to give old music a chance. Since i was a baby my mum played the Beatles to me. When i was older through the Beatles i heard the Stones and then the Who and so on. I came to a conclusion that old music is just much better than this new shite we here constantly. I just search through an old drawer full of records and discover amazing artists like the Smiths and the stone roses. @Smithsfan92 i walk with you and there will always be more like us.

  • And if the people stare

    Then the people stare

    Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care <3

  • i was just reading the smiths biography and i was shocked to read hand in glove failed to make the top 50 in the spring of 1983. the year i was born by the way :)

but it says here there break through was there second released track .this charming man. hand in glove is way better in my own opinion

just goes to show that pop music is the best seller .it was then and still is now

just nice that the smiths did pop music with a twist to it

because 99 percent of pop is rubbish

  • Ill Probably Never See you againnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • yeaaaaa nice

  • I love the harmonica in this

  • Bands like The Smiths, echo and the bunnymen, lords of the new church,it feels like there from today lol

  • lol i heard about this song from DJ paul Van Dyk :P

  • johnny marr is a god

  • im fuckin gettin in yeeehaaaa!!!

  • it annoys me wen people say how good morrisey is.. wat about johnny marr , he written the tracks with morrisey wen they were together in the smiths and wat a sublime guitarist he is aswell

  • I *adore* The Smiths, but I really do wish people would remember that a lot of Moz's most famous lines are taken from literary works, not written by him. Not all, obviously. But a lot. They deserve the title of most influential band ever, and Moz is a class lyricist, but the level of worship is a little creepy. Chill, he's just a guy. xxx

  • @leushy dude if you wanna see creepy worship, visit a justin beiber video...

  • @smithsfan92 I'm a smiths fan too and a few of my friends are too and we're still in high school. You are not alone :D

but if anything, at least where I come from, because of all the stuff happening politically in the world a lot of young people have lost interest with major issues in the present so music especially from the past is being sought after a whole lot more, to drown out what's happening now. But maybe that's just me :/ haha

  • great to read sooo many young smiths fans embracing their music....the smiths are awesome!!!

  • Another Smiths' track that hit the U.S. in 1984. It's lyrics so homoerotically chaged

that much of the queer youth, especially on the west coast where I was, went crazy

with excitement! Morrissey was going to be our new iconoclastic hero! We, none

of us, had ever heard the likes of him.I frankly have not heard anything like him

    since!

  • phil u need to test your hearing.... ha!

  • phil, you need to test your hearing.... ha!

  • im 14 and i love the smiths.

    my friends think im strange.

  • @feelingfrantic

Haha I was 13 when I discovered The Smiths. It's never too early to appreciate their brilliance!

  • I really like this song . The Smiths was great! and being a teenager in 2010 sucks!! So I wish i could go back to the past

  • i am also a modern day teen and our generation has not created any social culture which i have wanted to embrace myself in, so i walk alone

  • @smithsfan92

    i'm 15 and i love them :)

  • @smithsfan92 Did you just describe my life or what?? I wish that I had been a teenager in Thesmiths times :) pfff that would have been COOL!

  • @smithsfan92 Then you are DEFINITELY a Smiths Fan! Welcome to the club!

  • @smithsfan92 luckily, as you will discover, you will not walk alone young one :D

  • @nitemarehippygirl1 you made it sound like a star wars quote, i like it :)

  • @smithsfan92 :)

  • @smithsfan92 you guys are fucking hilarious. But im 20 dude, I'm on your team. I've been riding the smiths, libertines, oasis, stone roses boat for some time now. And I'm not even i the proper country,

  • @smithsfan92 lol There are thousands of people (like me) out there who feel the same way dude it's just a matter of finding them! So hopefully you will not walk alone. Good luck young pad won

  • @smithsfan92 I know, it feels like your living a poem by T.S. Eliot sometimes.

  • @smithsfan92 Don't despair, a musical revolution is about to knock our doors! It has been quiet for way too long since the end of Nirvana.

  • Comment removed

  • @smithsfan92

its created for us.. to much media and knowledge.

  • @smithsfan92 well said! the smiths got me through my alienated adolescence when everyone else was listening to the pop chart shite. This song is the greatest love song ever written hands down.

  • @smithsfan92 Likewise. :)

  • @smithsfan92 I'm only 15 and I have only just discovered this band, but i have quickly come to like all of this music. I feel like I should of been around in the 80's. ;)

  • @smithsfan92 Your not alone! I strive to bring back culture to youth!! :)

  • @smithsfan92 I'm 15 and I love the Smiths!

  • @smithsfan92 someday, hopefully a culture will be created us teens who appreciate real music can be apart of.

  • @smithsfan92 I don't think you understand that if a culture you want to be a part of doesn't exist you have to form one around yourself. Just sitting there isn't going change anything.

  • @smithsfan92 You say that but you can only really tell in hinesight. I agree though music is bollocks, the age we live in is the age of technology and corporations.

  • @smithsfan92 I'm 20 now. I had Morrissey and Marr's names tattooed into my forearm at 16. You are too correct. There are no social cultures worth delegating yourself to in our generation. We'll walk 'alone together' as the young ones that remember.

  • @smithsfan92 and youve just made the rest of us look like cunts...........

  • Noel Gallagher said this song is the reason he got in to music

    FACT

  • The Smiths and The Stone Roses are the best bands of 80's !!

  • I know the feeling..... I love this song.

  • I love this song.

  • woulda' killed to be a teen in the 80's.

  • @WritingHerBallad Not if you know what this song is about, love.

  • @WritingHerBallad Holy balls, I couldn't agree more.

  • @WritingHerBallad Well, I was a teen in the 80's, and the memories are fond if not occasionally painful. I couldn't imagine being a teen in 2010. The world has changed dramatically in 30 years

  • @ringnerd being a teen in 2010 is dreadful i assure you

  • the smiths were the only great band of the '80's

  • @skint0n0minted ACTUALLY, not true. the a-ha's were badass

  • musta sucked to live in the 80's

  • teehee I was at the Palladium show in Lost Angeles..I think it was actually 1984..I just remember almost being crushed against the barrier just before the stage by the crowd pushing so damn hard...great show though, legendary band

  • ABSOLUTE.

  • he loves that turd punching tho up the bum no harm done brown beating lol

  • Thanks for posting. I love this song. I saw the Smiths in either 1984 or 1986 at The Hollywood Palladium then about a year later when they became even more popular. They played at a place called the Universal Amphitheatre ( now known as the Gibson) and the opening act was a folk lesbian singer named Phranc. Brilliant show by both acts. Unfortunately, lost interest when Morrissey went solo. Never got into Morrissey Solo. It was a great time for music.

  • @tbyjb hey i was at that gig at the universal, too! Great show!

  • The Smiths, Oasis, Stones, the list is endless. The Manchester music scene was and is legendary.

  • being a 42yo mancunian this song / band remind me of the great pride i have in being a manc ! northern band , northern lyrics , northern meaning and northern poetry at its finest ! relevant today as it was as a teenager !!! lyric and song heaven

  • Hand in poop, The sun shines out of our cocks.

  • @superspiel how hilarious.
