im in the same situation now, i latch my locks but the alternate way (finger method) , i've discovered myself the same thing you have, i guess im not alone with those stray hairs hanging around the top of my head lol
THIS IS HOW I DO IT: i latch my hair first. then wash. then do braid out. by your hair being latch it wont untwist in the shower or when you wash it. once its clean just twist it like you where doing the finger re twist and finally do a braid-out. hope this help sum pplz out.
Lillydot, you should take a look at the video called, "Dreadlock Maintenance - Frizz Control". Although the hair model is white, I think the idea is quite good and could be used on afro hair to tidy up the frizziness that occurs ALONG the loc when you use the latching method.
I noticed that you have a loc jewel in one of your locs. If that is a permanent one (you never ever take it out), how in the world do you latch that loc? I have permanent loc jewels and plan on adding more, but I'm concerned about how I'll be able to continue latching those particular locs. Now I just palm roll those ones. Any advice??
hi. sorry i can't help you on than, its not a permanent one. i slip it off when i wash my hair or latch. i WANT some permanent ones, but i hold off for just that reason. palmrolling those ones seems like the only answer.
I loved you lessons on locs and I was wondering if you could help me with a problem. My locs grow together between latching and I think that pulling them apart is weaking my locs. What should I do before latching? Thanks
how lng are you going betweeen latchings? do you latch wet or dry? i haven't experienced this too much. my locs do get a bit tangled between latchings, but i always latch wet and the hair being wet makes it easier to detangle without ripping them apart. if i haven't just shampooed, i just use a spray bottle filled with a water, oil, and some sort of leave-in conditioner mixture.
i think its more so for keeping you hair damp for several days in a row. if i wash my hair before i go to sleep, i sleep on a towel to help wick away the moisture and i let it air dry over the next day and its usually dry by late afternoon. I've never had a problem with mold or mildew in my locs. but i never let my hair stay wet more than a day.
Thanks for getting back with me so soon. I normally wait a month or two before latching. Also, I do it dry because I thought it was best for holding the loc. I sleep unwrapped and on my back sometimes. Could that be the problem? Im due for a latching but I wanted to talk to you before I started it. So, should I cut or pull the locs apart? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again.
First i would say to dampen ur hair with some sort of leave-in conditioner or detangler and try to gently pull the locs apart. don't yank or rip them apart. if they're simlpy too hopelessly tangled, then and only then would i turn to the scissors. i have used scissors on my locs in the past to help detangle, but i wouldn't make a regualr habit out of it. it can lead to weakness and damage in ur locs.and laying on ur back with ur hai uncovered could be part of the problem. if ur tossing and ...
turning in ur sleep, that could be tangling the locs ur laying on. but i would suggest trying to latch wet in the future. the hair should de-tangle easier while wet. let me know how it goes.
no, because i typically only latch every three months or so(except for the front, which i latch about every 3 weeks), and i don't do it all at once. i'll do about half an hour for two or three days, or if i do it all at once, it takes a little over an hour. when i palm rolled myself, it took over two hours, plus an hour and a half under the dryer.
Hi from London, UK. I started my locs 3 years ago with palm rolling then changed to interlocing. I have noticed that the ends of some of my locs have unravelled and they refuse to loc. I have had to result to plaiting them which unravells when I wash my hair. I have cut a few but they have unravelled even further!! Any ideas to loc unruley ends?
I dont know if you read my last message. I got carried away typing and I went over in words. When I deleted some words it changed my whole message. So, let me keep it short and to the point. I sleep on my back alot. I wash every two weeks. My 2 biggest problems are the locks growing together @ the roots: the locs around the edges are weaker: The locks are not as rounded off as I would like. Please help.

Hi. I thought the people were discouraged from sleeping with hair wet to avoid mold. Your thoughts?

great tips. I re-latch my roots damp as well.

sure you can go back. a lot of people go back and forth with both. i'm not sure if this makes a difference in the look of the loc, though.

? ever since you started loc latching you loc did it get thinner? I was thing about latching my locs because i get tired of retwisting at times.
alonnakyle 3 years ago
they did get a tiny, tiny bit thinner. but its not really noticeable, even to me, where the palmrolled part stops and the latched part begins.

Thanks Lily. I tried latching my hair wet about a month ago. You are right! You do get a less frizzy appearence!

Do you find with latching it takes longer than regular twisting?
