My mom, may God rest her soul, used to keep a statue of a young lady with a suitcase in her hand. She said it reminded her of me, from here to there and the other place and back again, and then somewhere else, 1969 to 1979
God what I wouldn't give to have a beer with my brothers and listen to this type of country music. I miss them soooooo much, both the music and my brothers.
My Dad told me he remembered humming this song on a bus ride in 1965 to Bootcamp in Ft Polk La. God what must have gone through his mind....best man i ever knew hands down.
@pamelasu65 i always thought of this song as the break free song. i left home bound texas way, and couldnt make it on my own. i was on my way to work and heard this and almost cried, i felt like a complete loser, but at least i wasnt alone. now im 22 and back at mamas house, about to try it all over again. well thats my 2 cents, god bless and UP THE IRONS FROM LOUISIANA
The ultimate homesick song..probably not a great idea to listen to if you are already depressed about it, but great music, wonderful singer..what ever happened to great songs? It seems decades since anyone wrote or performed anything worth listening to.
Uhm, u know, these aren't German subtitles. Looks like Norwegian. I wonder why there are so many people out there who cannot see the difference. It's like camparing French with English.
Btt: I'm not into country songs, but this title is quite good.
His voice has a lot of feeling. He is great. ON my way to Kentucky many times from Ohio to see my relatives we passed through Ironton, Ohio Another great from Southern Ohio is Earle Thomas Conley.
One of these days somehow society will revert back to the music of my day and the trash going around now will be a disgrace. It is obvious how good singers of the past were as to now. Most all of them had a unique voice. When someone started singing, male or female you knew right away who it was.
@demoncupckake123 for sure, and all pop-music made today acually have a recipe, it's just a beat and a crappy melody, and then of course the lyrics! and alot of "pop-artist's" just send their lyrics to their record-companies and then they do the rest!
@boygeorgebaby84 music is still awesome you jst got to look for good songs like try a song called old man by red light king i knw it wasent originally his song but he maid it better trst me ;D
Bless your fathers and mine who died when I was two. He wasn't a trucker, but was a worker for the auto industry. I have missed him all my life, I'm 55 now, but this song has always touched my heart. I wish he could have come home.
So did my father, waiting to come home. While home he played the old time player, remeber it was almost worn out,the player and the album. He was lonely working long time driving from our home to the mountains where he worked for years. Still after so many years I still can see the tears in his eyes when leaving the family for weeks. I still have this in mind when listening to my past father.
wish i had the time to explain how much this means to me. bobby sang such great crossover songs. i remember them in vietnam and how everyone liked them so much they would sing along. so good.
@inya1lake um..they can associate the song with whatever or whoever they want, that's one of the beautiful things about music..it can be about whatever you want it to be..you can't help but feel what you feel.
As Judge Judy would Ask, "Are you thick?" Why couldn't this song be associated with the life of an over-the-road trucker? Do you think you have some special dispensation for interpreting the meaning of this song?
My mom just sent this to me I am 31 married always lived beside mom&dad now i am far away from home she said this song was my dad and mawmaw song now it is ar song Had to cry miss them everyday Love ya mom &dad
Tear drops fell on mama's note When I read the things she wrote She said, we miss you girl We love you come on home Well I didn't have to pack I had it all right on my back Now I'm five hundred miles away from home Away from home, away from home Cold and tired and all alone Yes, I'm five hundred miles away from home
Bobby Bare did an absolutely incredible job of reworking Hedy West's original Folk classic into a Country classic in its own right. Although he's actually from Southern Ohio, he re-wrote it almost as if it were a continuation of "Detroit City", about being a boy from around Nashville (to give it a true Country flair) far away from home in Detroit, which is actually 475 miles apart. Close enough to 500. That's just my take on it.
China's high speed train will soon pass the mark of 500 miles/hr, technically you are less than an hour away from home, enough time to see the live broadcast for the launching of China's rocket to the moon (a sure event soon!). You Americans keep singing this song because you don't have the fast train that can interconnect between cities but got money to fight the stupid wars, think you are safe now? Go to sleep early expect Osama point his gun blow up your head. 500 trillions budget deficit on!
Daddy always said he listened to this song and said he cried soo much wanting to come home, but he was a trucker and had to feed me and my brother....Rest In Peace Dad I miss you more and more!!!!
@EGrdneck It's a rough life on the road.My son's a trucker and I know he had a many a lonely night in a hotel out there from coast to coast. It tears me up when people say "oh he's just a trucker"! Well let me tell you those truckers have hearts of gold and have a brotherhood like no other.Good old boys who will stop and help anyone out there in distress. So givem a break when they're tryin to pull out onto the highway, let em out please. They're delivering the things we all buy.Tired & overworked♥
@msstevie1951 I drove truck for 30 yrs and yeah there are times when your so lonely.the night are so long.
when your out there and your wife and kids are back home.and it christmas and you cant be there.

@mogges1 That's right people are in a big hurry to drive to the stores to ,buy all the things they need & want. They sometimes don't stop to let a trucker out onto that busy highway, thinking he's just a big tough trucker,he can wait there! Well people think about this most everthing we buy gets to that store in a truck! Driven by that big trucker who is someone's son, husband, brother and daddy! Give them a break out there, and they can not stop as fast as a car can! Be careful!Be safe! ♥
@msstevie1951 hell yea! truck drivers are the back bone of america! my dad told me about a trucker strike back in i think the 70s and the country stoped within hours. if people keep bad mouthing them it might happen again then we will see how much we really need them. i mean trains can only carry stuff so far then the trucks have to take it the rest of the way

bye the way the subtitles are norwegian. and the channel "nrk" is Norsk Riks Kringkasting (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) the olest oldest channel in norway. funfact?
Me and my buddies used to sing this in pubs when we were stationed in Germany, only we would sing "5000 miles away from home" LOL man what good memories!
Talk about memories this one will get a lot of rewind after rewind again just like my 8-track use to do. over -over -over. This one was one of my favorites. Merl Hagger was another. love it Thank you.
I have this song in my CD, but I am afraid of playing it on road because every time I heard "miss you son we love you..." I just could not help my tears, as I am 10,000 miles away from home now.
Blue grass, acoustic is not exactly country. There are hundreds with GOOD messages. That is what pulled me from standard country years ago. Seemed they only sang about getting drunk or committing adultery. I saw the lyrics drew people away from God. I did not want that for myself. I listen to Christian music for the last 30 years. There are a lot of gospel, blue grass, old and new that you'd like that have soft tones, and good messages like this song.
Active duty US Marine in 70,80s & 90s, this song was a popular among those in the American Foreign Legion. Hearing the song brings a flood of memories. Thanks for posting.
That is great imagination. The song was written by Hedy West, a woman of poor white Apalachian roots, who saw the brutality of minning companies toward coal miners.I would interpret it as a song about a poor Apalachian searching for a living, but I guess we would have to ask Hedy what her inspiration was...
Kinda wondering why he's not in the Country Music Hall of Fame. One of the great stylists of the business. Thanks for posting this song. One of my favorites.
I love listening to this song..especially this version, cos I am so far away from home and I get so homesick sometimes...

I used to hate this kind of country when I was a kid and teenager. Now I love it! :)

This is such a wonderful song. I miss my family so much. I can't wait to go camping with my friends and family this summer when I go to visit them.

I'm five hundred miles away from home
Teardrops fell on mama's note when I read the things she wrote
She said we miss you son we love you come on home

Well I didn't have to pack I had it all right on my back
Now I'm five hundred miles away from home
Away from home away from home cold and tired and all alone
Yes I'm five hundred miles away from home

I know this is the same road I took the day I left home
But it sure looks different now
Well I guess I look different too cause time changes everything
I wonder what they'll say when they see their boy looking this way
Oh I wonder what they'll say when I get home

Can't remember when I ate it's just thumb and walk and wait
And I'm still five hundred miles away from home
If my luck had been just right I'd be with them all tonight
But I'm still five hundred miles away from home
Away from home away from home...

@Elvisfancilla79 -nothing to do with The Proclaimers song "(I'm gonna be) 500 Miles".
