  • This is one of the most beautiful songs of the world. It's really, really wonderful.

I love the melody and his simple style.

  • @huytk1 Back in the day, country music was more like this.

  • My mom, may God rest her soul, used to keep a statue of a young lady with a suitcase in her hand. She said it reminded her of me, from here to there and the other place and back again, and then somewhere else, 1969 to 1979

  • God what I wouldn't give to have a beer with my brothers and listen to this type of country music. I miss them soooooo much, both the music and my brothers.

  • 40 people are 500 miles away from home.

  • My Dad told me he remembered humming this song on a bus ride in 1965 to Bootcamp in Ft Polk La. God what must have gone through his mind....best man i ever knew hands down.

  • wait wait 40 dislikes? This is country in its purest form!! Touching story-telling is good ol' country

  • His voice is deep and mature but he looks young lol

  • This song isn't really about truck drivers although it does fit . This song is about a drifter or as we call them now , a homeless man.

  • @pamelasu65 i always thought of this song as the break free song. i left home bound texas way, and couldnt make it on my own. i was on my way to work and heard this and almost cried, i felt like a complete loser, but at least i wasnt alone. now im 22 and back at mamas house, about to try it all over again. well thats my 2 cents, god bless and UP THE IRONS FROM LOUISIANA

  • @TATELANDDOG Bobby Bare and Iron Maiden?....WORKS FOR ME!....from Cali.

  • I love this, such pure innocence .

  • This Song is absolutly great.

  • songs of my life

  • Way too sad.... I don't have to be trucker to feel like this... I miss my family and friends that have passed... It's just thumb walk and wait.....

  • @Inkenish I don't know why I like this song, i'm 17 lol but it remembers me of family members that passed away idk

  • This is a phenominal song...but it only lacks one thing...DA DA DA DA!

  • Somebody needs to get control of that crowd...2:43

  • @hurikayne1 yeah that's true!!!

  • @hurikayne1 There is such an amazing disconnect between the comatose-appearing audience and the enthusiastic applause just seconds later!

  • I expected some earlier version of 500 Miles of the Proclaimers, But this song is very nice too.

  • great song real meaning that's real music Loop 62 from alice texas

  • Old man red light king sucks. I checked it out. He ruined a trademark song of neil young.

  • Old man red light king

  • das lieblingslied meiner jugend

  • I love the backup voice gals, so relaxed you can hear them chatting while he sings!

  • IT'S NORWEGIAN!

  • Reminds me of my dad miss him so much

  • The ultimate homesick song..probably not a great idea to listen to if you are already depressed about it, but great music, wonderful singer..what ever happened to great songs? It seems decades since anyone wrote or performed anything worth listening to.

  • Uhm, u know, these aren't German subtitles. Looks like Norwegian. I wonder why there are so many people out there who cannot see the difference. It's like camparing French with English.

Btt: I'm not into country songs, but this title is quite good.

  • why they got the german translation, fuck the germans hahahaha

  • @babypink912

because if it isn't english then it must be german, right?

  • one super great tune

  • fuckin Classic!!!

  • always loved this song1

  • นึกถึงพ่อทันที

  • This makes me miss home but still, beautiful song! :)

  • Fantastic, please post more vids with Bobby :)

  • Beautiful Song Indeed

  • His voice has a lot of feeling. He is great. ON my way to Kentucky many times from Ohio to see my relatives we passed through Ironton, Ohio Another great from Southern Ohio is Earle Thomas Conley.

One of these days somehow society will revert back to the music of my day and the trash going around now will be a disgrace. It is obvious how good singers of the past were as to now. Most all of them had a unique voice. When someone started singing, male or female you knew right away who it was.

  • When I hear country music like this, it makes me wonder if todays' country musicians have ever even listened to classics like this.

  • love it

  • does anyoen notice how the audiance was dressed to see this show, coats and ties

try and get anyone to dress up to go out

  • @babytaz2yo Yeah, it's pretty bad when I can put on just about any kind of shirt with a collar, and be complimented for how well I'm dressed.

  • this song brings back alot of memories =)

  • schade

  • Who can dislike this?

  • @moskuseater uncultured cretins that think Justin Beiber is music

  • @demoncupckake123 for sure, and all pop-music made today acually have a recipe, it's just a beat and a crappy melody, and then of course the lyrics! and alot of "pop-artist's" just send their lyrics to their record-companies and then they do the rest!

  • @moskuseater it's sad that all talent is pretty much gone these days.

  • This is when music was WONDERFUL. Now is all TORN up.

  • @boygeorgebaby84 Preach on bro.

    Music Is Dead.

  • @boygeorgebaby84 music is still awesome you jst got to look for good songs like try a song called old man by red light king i knw it wasent originally his song but he maid it better trst me ;D

  • @penguinegg01. The name "penguinegg01" ruins my day... Twat.

  • i love all of skeeter davis and bobby bare music

  • Bobby Bare's kinda cute LOL

  • OH God, the talking bit in the middle just ruins it

  • Bless your fathers and mine who died when I was two. He wasn't a trucker, but was a worker for the auto industry. I have missed him all my life, I'm 55 now, but this song has always touched my heart. I wish he could have come home.

  • So did my father, waiting to come home. While home he played the old time player, remeber it was almost worn out,the player and the album. He was lonely working long time driving from our home to the mountains where he worked for years. Still after so many years I still can see the tears in his eyes when leaving the family for weeks. I still have this in mind when listening to my past father.

  • Where's the Scottish speccie-4-eyes?????? heh heh

  • Watseka Theatre Watseka IL Country 2011 Summer Music Concert Series;

    July 2 Marty Stuart; July 15 The Bellamy Brothers; August 5 Josh Thompson;

August 26 Ricky Skaggs; September 3 Jerrod Niemann.

  • wish i had the time to explain how much this means to me. bobby sang such great crossover songs. i remember them in vietnam and how everyone liked them so much they would sing along. so good.

  • What happens when you play a country record backwards?

You get your girl, your truck, your dog and your job back.

    :)

  • @scottbaino thats honkytonk brother

  • Because its a sad lonely road a trucker leads and this reminds some of that.

  • Sometimes I listen to this song and realize how gud i really have it. God bless America X)

  • This song has nothing to do with truckers. Why are people making the association?

  • @inya1lake um..they can associate the song with whatever or whoever they want, that's one of the beautiful things about music..it can be about whatever you want it to be..you can't help but feel what you feel.

  • @inya1lake

As Judge Judy would Ask, "Are you thick?" Why couldn't this song be associated with the life of an over-the-road trucker? Do you think you have some special dispensation for interpreting the meaning of this song?

The wife of a retired Teamster.

  • @TheLimberlostGirl

    "Can't remember when I ate

It's just thumb and walk and wait"

It's not rocket-science sweetheart, unless of course the guy has lost his truck and is riding his thumb.

  • Magic!!!!!!!!!!

  • this was done in Germany back in the '60's

  • @oldvet53

It was actually shot in Oslo, Norway by NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Cooperation) in 1964.

  • The original and still the best

  • This is what I call real country. An absolute legend.

  • Great song and singer,,

  • the appropriately dressed men in the audience look like employees of IBM or maybe

The city council of Indianapolis" Indy...."

  • thx for the video

  • thank god for bobby bare

  • This is the song I used to sing in Nam. I just substituted 10,000 miles for 500. It was the way I felt.

  • Legend!

  • Wunder schönes Lied.

Marine Corp........17 years old and stationed at Camp Lejeune N. C.

    Long live Jacksonville.

    PaulB

  • @broadwaypfb THANKYOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. MAYBE BECAUSE OF IT I WON'T HAVE TO WATCH MY GRANDSONS GO INTO A WAR ZONE......D

  • @broadwaypfb Thank you for your service Devildawg! Semper Fi.

  • NRK faktisk :D

  • Happy Birthday Bobby Bare

  • THIS ISNT THE PROCLAIMERS!

  • @lfrommtl ....Thank goodness!

  • Bobby Bare did an absolutely incredible job of reworking Hedy West's original Folk classic into a Country classic in its own right. Although he's actually from Southern Ohio, he re-wrote it almost as if it were a continuation of "Detroit City", about being a boy from around Nashville (to give it a true Country flair) far away from home in Detroit, which is actually 475 miles apart. Close enough to 500. That's just my take on it.

  • :'( This is such a sad sad song. Yet its still a wonderful and BEAUTIFUL song. Thank you so so much for posting.

  • the old songs are the best now and forever

  • first time i heard this song was 1964 ,stationed at ft polk,la. it was 500 miles from my hometown in enid ok.

  • what a lovely baritone this guy has!!! just luv it...

  • Beautiful....lovely backup vocals too...

  • He aint nothing but a big ol Momma's boy.... Wanting to go back home from Detroit City and now complaning he 500 miles from home.... Big Ol Mommazzz!

  • this is a great song!

  • i dont read anything military into this song like most of you......it just reminds me of a time in my life.

  • He has a very cool style. The crowd was very respectful.and well dressed. However, his jean jacket doesn't hide his French Cuffs and cuff links.

  • awwww shit freaking good!

  • Not a fan of country at all - I would rather say I dislike it (country)

BUT - This man - wow man, hes got some voice! Like to hear this song every now and again.

    Thumbs up!

  • Great singer, but lacks individual persona, seems to act more like Johnny Cash then himself.

  • そしてカントリーの、ボビー・ベア やっぱりカントリーはクラシック

  • @zunzunzunx =D

  • @zunzunzunx

country and a classic indeed my friend.

  • Daddy always said he listened to this song and said he cried soo much wanting to come home, but he was a trucker and had to feed me and my brother....Rest In Peace Dad I miss you more and more!!!!

  • @EGrdneck keep on truckin man

  • @EGrdneck

A salute to all the dads not out there anymore ...

  • @EGrdneck It's a rough life on the road.My son's a trucker and I know he had a many a lonely night in a hotel out there from coast to coast. It tears me up when people say "oh he's just a trucker"! Well let me tell you those truckers have hearts of gold and have a brotherhood like no other.Good old boys who will stop and help anyone out there in distress. So givem a break when they're tryin to pull out onto the highway, let em out please. They're delivering the things we all buy.Tired & overworked♥

  • @msstevie1951 I drove truck for 30 yrs and yeah there are times when your so lonely.the night are so long.

when your out there and your wife and kids are back home.and it christmas and you cant be there.

truckers do get a bad rap.i hate to say it but a lot of the bad rap truckers get is there own falt.they lost respect.when some new trucker does something dum it reflick on all truckers.

remember this if the trucks stop so does America.

  • @mogges1 That's right people are in a big hurry to drive to the stores to ,buy all the things they need & want. They sometimes don't stop to let a trucker out onto that busy highway, thinking he's just a big tough trucker,he can wait there! Well people think about this most everthing we buy gets to that store in a truck! Driven by that big trucker who is someone's son, husband, brother and daddy! Give them a break out there, and they can not stop as fast as a car can! Be careful!Be safe! ♥

  • @msstevie1951 hell yea! truck drivers are the back bone of america! my dad told me about a trucker strike back in i think the 70s and the country stoped within hours. if people keep bad mouthing them it might happen again then we will see how much we really need them. i mean trains can only carry stuff so far then the trucks have to take it the rest of the way

  • @msstevie1951 iam a trucker it still bring a tear to me

  • @EGrdneck very touching, thaks for charing =)

  • @EGrdneck I lost my dad also I know how you feel.....

  • Heavy fucking metal!

  • The good ole days....True country

Bobby Bare never received the true accolades he deserves.....

  • Great song!

  • i blared this song when i was pulling out of the school parking lot in my old ford ranchero.

  • This is such a wonderful song. I miss my family so much. I can't wait to go camping with my friends and family this summer when I go to visit them.

  • Me and my buddies used to sing this in pubs when we were stationed in Germany, only we would sing "5000 miles away from home" LOL man what good memories!

  • I'm five hundred miles away from home

Teardrops fell on mama's note when I read the things she wrote

She said we miss you son we love you come on home

  • Well I didn't have to pack I had it all right on my back

Now I'm five hundred miles away from home

Away from home away from home cold and tired and all alone

Yes I'm five hundred miles away from home

  • I know this is the same road I took the day I left home

But it sure looks different now

Well I guess I look different too cause time changes everything

I wonder what they'll say when they see their boy looking this way

Oh I wonder what they'll say when I get home

  • Can't remember when I ate it's just thumb and walk and wait

And I'm still five hundred miles away from home

If my luck had been just right I'd be with them all tonight

But I'm still five hundred miles away from home

Away from home away from home...

  • Talk about memories this one will get a lot of rewind after rewind again just like my 8-track use to do. over -over -over. This one was one of my favorites. Merl Hagger was another. love it Thank you.

  • i sung this with my guitar wen was in chedle royel hospital

  • I have this song in my CD, but I am afraid of playing it on road because every time I heard "miss you son we love you..." I just could not help my tears, as I am 10,000 miles away from home now.

  • i grew up on old country tunes! this is one of my favs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! makes me feel like i'm a kid again :)

  • We used to hear this on Armed Forces Radio Vietnam we also started singing this song 2/12 4th and 25 inf div 1967

  • Blue grass, acoustic is not exactly country. There are hundreds with GOOD messages. That is what pulled me from standard country years ago. Seemed they only sang about getting drunk or committing adultery. I saw the lyrics drew people away from God. I did not want that for myself. I listen to Christian music for the last 30 years. There are a lot of gospel, blue grass, old and new that you'd like that have soft tones, and good messages like this song.

  • Active duty US Marine in 70,80s & 90s, this song was a popular among those in the American Foreign Legion. Hearing the song brings a flood of memories. Thanks for posting.

  • gifted yep. y not CMHF

  • Kinda wondering why he's not in the Country Music Hall of Fame. One of the great stylists of the business. Thanks for posting this song. One of my favorites.

  • Now dose this song relate to any thing proclaimers 500 miles

  • @Elvisfancilla79 no, this is just a song that a writer wrote because it came to his mind. how many of your rap song have a proclaimer.

  • @Elvisfancilla79 -nothing to do with The Proclaimers song "(I'm gonna be) 500 Miles".
