Even though they can make sounds, they have never heard themselves and have never been able to communicate with others verbally which means they have no vocal skills. I have heard a deaf person attempt to make sounds before and they sound extremely slurred and completely incomprehensible. Signing saves deaf people time and embarrassment.

Deaf people that went deaf after learning how to speak often sound just like hearing people. Some Deaf people can talk perfectly, some can but would rather not, and some can speak but have a hard time making themselves understood, and some can use their voice but can't really produce intelligible speech. It just depends on their background. smile

People often assume if you can talk then you can hear. So some deaf people "turn off" their voice in public situations so they don't have to keep explaining themselves.
