ii/e, IIe, same thing. You can look it up. It's the model Apple came out with after the Apple II Plus and the Apple III (this one was a flop). There were a few more in this line: the Apple IIc (for "compact", it was a portable), the Apple IIc Plus, and the Apple IIGS.
I vaguely remember when these graphics were state of the art. That being said, I laughed at the sound effects and choppy game play. I thought the first sounds in the video were recording glitches. Only after watching for several seconds did I realize that sound effects in the Apple II era sound suspiciously like modern sound artifacts.
The sound just blows you back in your seat. I liked Broderbund games, which I don't remember ever paying for. I was such a little pirate back then. I used to trade them through the mail after setting up trades on "The Source" which WAS the internet in those days. Those locksmith programs were handy and I even got pirated copies of those.
Hmm. I don't know. You have to look at it pretty closely to think it looks like the Death Star, but yeah, I can see what you're saing. In all the time I played the game I never thought it looked like that. It was just a blob with some texture to me. Why Gorlin didn't bother to make it look more like the Moon, I don't know.
@mmille10 It's because the graphics system is archaic, and the game I was thinking you might like earlier is Sir-Tech's Rescue Raiders, another battle themed game of the early 80s. The idea with the moon was to reproduce craters, but having holes and color onscreen as well, there's some flare ups and blooming in the NTSC video system
I know a little about this. I remember when I used to draw stuff on the Koala Pad (in one of the high resolution modes) that certain colors REALLY didn't mix well! Something like if you put white next to blue you'd get this AWFUL orange bleed-over that was real obvious. Someone explained to me once why this happened, but I can't remember it anymore. With NTSC there was dithering as well, which made for some interesting effects.
anyone remember this game dunno what it was called u type some word up and u blast it (was on apple) using spaceship ; they had math program liek this too i think
BTW, a common convention with the older Apple II games like this one is when the game first starts up, press the 'K' key to start the game. That's supposed to tell it you're using the keyboard. I tried that before I responded to you, but it made no difference. Maybe you'll have better luck though.
I ran AppleWin on a Windows laptop when I made this video. I was emulating a joystick (probably using the mouse). I can see that now, because there are little slider indicators moving along the edge of the video. These told me where my "virtual joystick" was pointing. Just use left mouse-click to fire. Use right mouse-click (or equivalent) to turn. I haven't been able to do this, but you may be able to emulate a joystick with the keyboard.
In the beginning I used to hate the planes too, but I figured out how to dodge the missiles pretty easily in the air. I hated the flying saucers. They'd hover above you and it was difficult to get out from under them. If a plane was coming at you at the same time, yikes!
I don't really remember the flying saucers. I must of really sucked at this game to not ever make it that far!! Yeah, the planes missiles were not too hard to dodge, just when you are going back to the base real fast sometimes they would sneak up on you and get you real quick out of the side of the screen. That pissed me off especially when I had 20 guys in my chopper. Still love this game and still play it once in a while.
The game had color all along. You were playing it on a monochrome monitor (green screen, probably). I made the video by playing the game on an emulator. I emulated joystick input. The way you turned using a joystick I think was you pointed the stick left or right while simultaneously holding down the fire button. I don't remember for sure. The "facing the tanks" position was one of the positions you could turn to, in addition to left and right.
Seriously, though, this was one of my all-time favorite games when I had my Apple... and yes, I was able to achieve a perfect score, and got the Broderbund logo....
Oh, and I forgot a trick-- if you keep landing and taking off, getting closer to your base, and coaxing the hostages to return to the base on their own, you will get a perfect score AND be able to just fly around forever, blowing stuff up!
Yeah, you know it was one of the first times I'd played the game in years. I forgot that if you land on the guys you kill them. When it first happened I thought I got him okay. It wasn't until I looked at the replay that I realized it. Oops...
Hmm. That could be a tough one. I never played this game well. I'm pretty busy right now, but if the opportunity presents itself I might make a go of it. If I succeed I'll post it.

Thanks for posting this! I remember playing this on my dad's Apple II/e but it was all orange because that's the monitor we had.
I thought the Choplifter HD remake game was pretty decent but I had to see this again to really see what a great job they did with it!
