@bubblyromano4ever its a play on the Japanese (and old Western) belief that on Hallows Eve the veil between our world and the Otherworld grows thin enough to let spirits and demons pass through. On this night if you meet one of them, you are supposed to give them a treat. If you don't they kill you or spirit you away to their world. Rin/Lens parents do not give the demon a treat when he asks for it (because they were for their children) so he kills them and traps their souls in a jewel.

@CrystaBlade Len/Rin had gone to find their parents and happened upon their bodies. The demon stole ALL the candy and spirits the children away (in other words, he cursed their souls and they became his underlings) and promised them that if they gather other souls for him, he will give them their parents souls so that they and their parents may be free to move on to Heaven. The demon never does, so many years go by and the children become true demons themselves.

This is what I think it is:

Rin and Len were orphans whose souls were stolen by the demon. The demon said that it would give them back their souls (sealed in/represented by the flaming stone) if they worked for him as Will-o-the-Wisps. Their mischievous sides drive them to also kill anybody who didn't give them candy.

They want to go to their parents but they can't reach them because all they can say is 'meow', so they follow the demons orders in order to get their souls and their human forms back. In the end they start believing starting fires could make people notice they're not ordinary cats but actually Rin and Len and help them, since demon doesn't seem to ever let them go.
