I'm thinking of the very special H2O (water), both hydrogen and oxygen burns very easly, but try to get water to burn... why is it that way, some genius who knows?

@TheOrbitalDropShock When elements combine, they get a completely new set of properties. Take rust or example: Iron is magnetic. Combine it with oxygen, you get rust. That's not magnetic.

@landewebshow Thanks I get it, now I'm probably going to be a little bit ignorant so don't get all angry, the thing is oxygen isn't magnetic, which could mean that it inherit some of the attributes from each material and the magnetism isn't transferred to the rust, in that case water should be very flammable, but it's not. So is there another better example you can give and explain a bit deeper what it means? (don't rage if I'm ignorant, just want to learn)

@TheOrbitalDropShock Understanding how magnetism is transfered is something you learn in gr12 chem. Understanding property of substances is something you would learn in university 2nd year organic chem.

Oxygen is not a metalic element and therefore can not be magnetised, Its not so much that materials inherited one property from the other but how one substance's electrons distribution and arrangement has changed in a way that affects how it interacts with other substances.

@TheOrbitalDropShock Well, in rust for example, the iron in it can't be separated with a magnet. It's not really iron anymore. So if you came up to rust and held a magnet there, the iron in it wouldn't attach to the magnet. So the iron itself isn't magnetic anymore.
